A few surprises.  7 true freshman listed on the 2 deep.  Tevin Mitchell is listed as co-2nd team.  Taiwan Johnson listed as starting ng.
Sometimes wrong, but never in doubt

Kevin

really surprised about mitchell. guess the time lost to injury cost him.  will not be surprised if he is starting saturyday

Bielema said in his PC that he had been slowed by a hammy, that Washington would start and Mitchell will play.

That is uprising. Before his injury last year, he was really starting to look like a solid CB. Just seems to have never recovered fully.

Biggus Piggus

I don't remember them listing two TE positions on the depth chart last season. Will we see two-TE formations more often?

Sebastian Tretola is listed as second-team LG behind Luke Charpentier, after practicing most of August behind RG Denver Kirkland.

And surprise - Austin Beck is second-team RG. Another surprise - Cameron Jefferson is second-team LT.

As expected Hatcher or Morgan listed at one WR spot, Wilson starting at the other backed by Hollister.

Overall, much better-looking offense than we started with last season.

Biggus Piggus

Defensive line two-deep looks reasonably good. No surprise at linebackers - Mitchell, Ellis, Spaight.

Kinda surprised Jared Collins is a starting corner opposite Washington, but in this game I bet they are especially conscious about speed.

Safeties look interesting - FS Alan Turner (everyone had him pegged as SS), SS Rohan Gaines, backed by McKinney or Liddell at FS, Coley at SS.

Also noticed Tevin Mitchell as an "OR" for one of the backup CB spots.  Not even a solid #2 though he is an upperclassman now and was a 4* recruit ?

No FB listed as well. Arinze?

If they didn't find a FB they liked, they will probably go with Derby as an H-back. At 6'6" 250lb, he will probably provide more pass-catching possibilities than the other FB's.

Biggus Piggus

Note that Sam Irwin-Hill is the kickoff specialist. Korliss and Keon are the kick returners, D.J. Dean and Jared Cornelius the punt returners.

Yep, according to practice reports, Irwin-Hill has been thumping his kickoffs.

Glad Liddell is in the 2 deep.  He's an sec athlete.

Bielema said:

Both Smothers and Ragnow will get to play C in game one. Jefferson is a reserve at guard and tackle, also can be used as a blocking tight end on special teams.

He said the corner who had the best preseason was Collins, after him Washington. (I'm surprised.)

Also a surprise - he said the fastest receivers are Hatcher and Cornelius. I thought Wilson was the deep threat.

Good news - Wise is back + playing.

Starting fullback is Kody Walker. Only other healthy one is Arinze.

Freshmen who are playing -

WR - Cornelius, Robinson, Edwards
OL - Ragnow, Wallace
DL - Jackson, possibly Brown
LB - Eugene, Hackett, Ramsey
DB - Toliver, Liddell for sure, maybe Floyd, Santos.

Eugene is another one that came out of nowhere.  Not heavily recruited at all.

I also noticed that Coach Smith is on the sideline and Jennings and Shannon are in the box.  That's a change, and I like it since Smith said his preference is on the sideline.

He may not be as fast as those two, but Wilson is a solid 6'3". So he may be able to get the jump balls.

First string DTs.           542 lbs
Second String DTs.       664 lbs

Can Johnson hold up against the run?

Who are our 5th and 6th DTs?    Boyd?

One thing you can be absolutely sure of:

AJ Derby will get a lot of snaps and have a lot of balls thrown his way this season...

He will be fine. Reports are Johnson is closer to 275lb. He is going to play a titled NG position, explained further here:

I would be more worried about Hodge keeping up with the fast paced offense

...and will catch almost all of them, many for touchdowns because he can ball. Give your schtick a rest. Bury it....alive.

Absolutely a great thread!  It's informative, positive, and staying on track with the OP.  Great Job Guys!!!!

This may be the best group of LBs we've ever signed in one class being coached by one of the game's better position coaches. I bet we see marked improvement from game 1.

hogfan870

Would love it if this was stickied.  May want to pull up that depth chart during the game if some of the new players get much playing time.

I know there are other places to get it, but a sticky here is probably as easy as anywhere to find it.

Throw the jump balls to Sprinkle.

noticed as well.. we look lite along the D line and not real deep at the tackles.

We should start seeing the dividends of this coaching staff CBB assembled this Saturday.

Just thinking if we go two tight ends we'll have over 2000 lbs of blocker on the Oline.  Kinda like our chances in goalline situations.  :)

Fullback is worrisome. Guess Chris Jones isn't the answer many thought he would be this time last year. Not sure why we have Colquitt a scholarship if he can't crack the 2 deep.

bennyl08

This isn't a season depth chart, but for the Auburn game. So, the lighter DTs could be a strategic move.

I'm guessing Mitchel not starting is due to his injury and will be back to starting soon.

Some of the OL positions are surprising. Jefferson at tackle, beck at guard.

Finally, while depth at DT is definitely  a concern, we've known about that since the season ended. However, with the coming on of Beanum, DE depth is phenomenal.

damn I thought it was only a color, didn't realize it was named after a liqueur. leave it to benny to make me research the history of chartreuse

ChicoHog

Hopefully the converted OLineman, Boyd and Ollison, can provide depth at DT.

What's up with Hawkins at WR?  Isn't he the fastest guy?  Can't catch or can't get separation or maybe can't block well enough?

Yea you're right. You must be basing your prediction on the years of previous experience he has at the position...as well as all of his success as a TE previously.

Basing it off of his play in the spring and fall and his knowledge of the offense. Keep spewing hate though, it seems to be working for you lol.

Both sustained injuries during fall camp that set them back. Both have gotten reps with the ones this month.

Jones only was added to the roster when Otha bounced. He's not going to play this season. Coaches are worried about FB. We've got nothing there. Probably need to go recruit one.

Listening to Bielema's comments, it sounds like if there needs to be a substitution at either Guard or Tackle, Jefferson would be the first one off the bench. Tretola may come off before him for Charpentier.

In today's football, you really need to have a fullback who is a threat to catch the ball out of the backfield. Kiero Small was great at this. If not, it might be better going with two TE's and having one lineup more in the H-back slot.

What do we know about these guys? I remember some signing day notes on a few of them. Have they been having an especially good Fall camp? Will be interesting to see who--and how quickly--they will make the field.

With our depth at DE, I really doubt Brown will play.

Bielema did say that Brown could end up playing.  I really hope we're able to redshirt him, though.

A little surprised Derby is listed ahead of Sprinkle. Sprinkle is the real deal. I'm sure Sprinkle will see the field plenty, perhaps some as a third receiver. Do we use 3 TE's very often?

All in all, I'd say those three make TE one of the strongest positions on the team, no?

Sprinkle will be a TE used in special situations. He is not a down to down TE like HH. I don't expect Sprinkle to get a lot of plays at Auburn.

Wildhog

Only problem with Sprink is that he's not a very good blocker.

I love him as a receiver, though.

Despite dOUCHEwcherr's attempts to slam Derby, I hope the kid does get a bunch of opportunities to catch the ball this year.  Whether it is as an H-back or TE, hope he gets a chance to shine.

If the Chaney offense has been installed as much as rumored, we will see an efficient offense against a bad defense... and the result will be that we gain more yards than the Barners.

Realistically, I don't think we will see the full potential of our Defense this week, simply because the GusBus offense does work... hopefully we can stiffen up and keep them out of the end zone at least one more time than our offense.
