Off Season Topic: Ex-Ole Miss players say they were misled...
« on: February 03, 2018, 06:35:04 am »

about the NCAA investigation of Ole Miss.

Six former Ole Miss football players who transferred to other schools after the Rebels were hit with additional NCAA penalties plan to build their appeals for immediate eligibility around text messages they say were sent to recruits to downplay the severity of the NCAA investigation into the program.

The players -- quarterback Shea Patterson (Michigan), safety Deontay Anderson (Houston), linebacker Jarrion Street (UAB), offensive tackle Jack DeFoor (Georgia Tech) and receivers Tre Nixon (Central Florida) and Van Jefferson (Florida) -- have appealed to the NCAA for immediate eligibility at their new schools. Without waivers, they'll have to sit out the upcoming season under NCAA rules.

According to the NCAA, six football staff members and 12 boosters were involved in the violations, which included the provision of approximately $37,000 to prospects through cash payments, the use of automobiles, lodging, transportation, meals and apparel. Two staff members also helped arrange fraudulent standardized test scores for three recruits.

http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/22293030/six-former-ole-miss-rebels-players-seek-immediate-eligibility-new-schools

I wouldn't be surprised if these kids are granted immediate eligibility given that they were mislead that all of these violations by Ole Miss occurred under HDN and not Hugh Freeze. But the biggest thing here is Ole Miss getting caught with their hand in the cookie jar. It's nice to see another team in the SEC West having some off-season challenges.

It was very strange how OM was suddenly recruiting way above their average.  Many on here complained about that and most never believed the NCAA was ever going to address it.

Shea Patterson's signing with Ole Miss coincidently coincided with a brother getting a staff position with the Rebs/Bears/Grove Sharks.  Now he wants to join the Harbaugh circus and claiming to be a victim. Don't know about the other kids, but Shea appears to be an opportunistic user.

Soooooorry. You took the risk of joining a program that you’d have to be living on another planet not to suspect cheating, and now you want special treatment. NO! Just  because you came from a program that ignored the rules for gain, doesn’t mean you get to continue to do so!

While it’s certainly sad, you also have to question the decision making process of these guys.  EVERYONE knew there was a great deal of smoke in Oxford, and deciding to attend anyway was simply ignoring the obvious.

It's hard for me to believe these players didn't know they were joining a team that was cheating and any gifts they might have received were improper.  Rewarding players for bad conduct isn't the way to stop these illegal behaviors from taking place at institutions such as Ole Miss, or anywhere else for that matter.

Exactly my thought. No way they didn't either received some form of illegal gifts/treatment or never heard another play talk about it. They knew Ole Miss was dirty but probably didn't think anyone would get punished for it and didn't expect Freeze to be caught paying for hookers on the University dime.

All I can say about any/all players who eventually signed with OM (whether or not they've transferred or not) is the old saying: "If you lay down with dogs don't be surprised if you get fleas".

I think the only fair way to do it, is itf they get to become eligible immediately, OM get their scholarship and bowl ban extended for two more years.

That would be a nice resolution.

I will add that the players should have to pay a fine equal to the amount of the goods and services they illegally accepted from Ole Miss or it's members.  A little bit of sarcasm there.

The NCAA allegations came out 10 days before National Signing Day - I'm sure some of these kids didn't have many options that late in the game. Why should they have to pay for something that transpired before they got there?

OM wasn’t the outlier. What led to their downfall was they attempted to upset the order of the SEC and that wasn’t well received.

However, they will be fine. To an extent they were successful. They were able to increase their recruiting profile and going forward should still enjoy some success on the recruiting trail.

If the NCAA has findings against the players, then they should have to serve a penalty.  But they haven't been found guilty of anything.  Only the school and coaches have been.  Let them have their day in court.

I have a difficult time holding an 18yo player more accountable than the coaches who are supposed to be the experts at what is/isn't legal in recruiting.  I say that because it's not always straight cash homey that gets given to the players or families.

Proving someone made misrepresentations does not prove you were defrauded. They must have been misrepresentations that a reasonable person would rely on.

Probably I have used common sense for years to own and run two businesses. I can't even count the money I have. I just listen and pay attention.

I don't live in a fantasy world that makes up a reason for everything that someone does. Any player that went to Ole Miss knew very well what was going on. You can talk down to me but I don't really care how smart you are. You are typical of what excuse maker are today. Everything is OK nothing is ever my fault...LMAO to be real I am slow...

That's neat.

I agree it the kids are clean then let them play.
