They have now missed the playoffs in 13 of 22 straight seasons and only have a 3-9 playoff record during those 22 seasons.

The Jerry Effect...

Jerry would be the worst owner in the NFL if he hadn't played with Jimmy Johnson at Arkansas.  His record of futility since he idiotically got rid of Jimmy is almost unsurpassed.  Ironically, he still considers himself a football genius.

He not only put all his eggs in the Dak basket, but he then forced Romo into retirement so he could hedge his bet.  He's not only a football nincompoop, he's also a vindictive, selfish, manipulative, incomprehensibly egotistical man.

I've been a fan since the Ice Bowl days, but I still find it hard not to smile over Jerry once again getting his just desserts.  I feel bad for players like Jason Witten, but Jerry and his incompetent head coach are reaping what they have sown.

On a positive side , the Cowboys found out that it wasn't because of the lack of Elliot that they lost all those game, so there is that.

For most of us on this board Jerry's decisions turning the Cowboys into a non-entity in terms of playoff success isn't the only situation we have to worry about.  I'll leave it at that other than to say I hope he never buys the Astros.

Wasn't it brilliant for Jerry and Garrett to announce last year that Dak is the starting QB in perpetuity and that there would be no competition for the job?  He is the king of the two yard pass.  He either throws it into the flat or 40 yards downfield.

Romo never played on a team with a defense close to this one.  He may have won a couple of Super Bowls if he had.  Instead, Jerry not only made the change but announced it was permanent just in time to squander the combination of an outstanding defense and the best offensive line and skill position player package in the league.

It's uncanny how good he is at making exactly the most disastrous decision at precisely the worst time.  I'm so glad he now runs my two favorite teams.

Romo wouldn’t have stayed healthy. Nothing in 10 years of Romo led me to believe he would ever deliver a SB. Jury’s still out on Dak. Definitely took a step back this year but was outstanding last year.

However, I was all for a 2 qb system last year once Romo was good to go.

And yes, I wish Jerry would leave the Hogs alone too! Unless he can deliver Venables. Lol

People still care about the Cowboys? Why? Nearly half the league has won a Super Bowl since the Coyboys' last. They've won three playoff games since their last Super Bowl ... which was more than 20 years ago.

Romo wouldn’t have stayed healthy.

There is no way of knowing that.  Romo missed games with injuries in 2008 and 2010 but then started 62 games in four years from 2011 through 2014.

Reporters who were at Cowboys practices after he got healthy last year said there was no question who was the better QB.  They said Romo looked incredible throwing the ball in practice.  Jerry and his lackey Jason short circuited any possible QB competition by pre-emptively announcing that a rookie would be the permanent starting QB and that if Romo chose to continue playing he would be strictly a backup.

Now here we are two playoff seasons later and despite an outstanding defense and great supporting cast around Jerry's quarterback the Cowboys still have not won a playoff game.

In the NFL windows of opportunity are fleeting.  You play to win today when you have any chance whatsoever to do so.

Jerry Jones sucks at knowing how to win.  He's a rich guy who had enough money to buy an NFL team and happened to know one of the great coaches of the last several decades.

Romo won 2 playoff games in 10 years. The defense this year is not outstanding and the offensive supporting cast hasn’t been great. No Zeke for 6 games and no Tyron for multiple games makes that offense look average at best. Dak put up numbers last year that the league had never seen before from a rookie. If Romo wasn’t done, he wouldn’t have retired. And he had some pretty good defensive talent for a few of those years too let’s not forget.

It isn't exactly their birthright to be in a Super Bowl or an NFC Championship game.

Three Super Bowl's in the last 25 years isn't bad at all. The height of the 90s will more than likely never be reached again by them.

During the last 5-6 years the Cowboys have finished I think 30th and dead last in the NFL in defense.  The only season Romo played with the current offensive line and a really good running back, Demarco Murray, he led the league in passing and the Cowboys went 12-4.

Romo set the NFL record for pass efficiency in the December playoff run that year and Dallas would have been in the NFC Championship Game if Dez hadn't tried to extend the ball across the goal line and lost it.

He was one of the best at executing a timing based downfield passing attack.  That would probably come in handy with this squad, but we will never know since Jerry forced him into retirement.

Jerry got exactly what he wanted.  Now he gets to stew in it.  I have a feeling all of us may be repeating that thought over the next few years.

Jerry didn’t force romo to retire. He was still under contract this year had he not retired.

Get over it man. Romo wasn’t delivering a SB. Dak may not either, but he’s 25. Lets wait and see how he responds next year.

Get over it man. Romo wasn’t delivering a SB. Dak may not either, but he’s 25. Lets wait and see how he responds next year.

Romo retired precisely because he was under contract.  Jerry wouldn't play him even in a meaningless game to end the season last year and announced that Dak was going to be the starter going forward.  If Tony had come back this year he wouldn't have been allowed to compete for the job, he was designated the backup.  He wasn't going to do that, and neither would any other veteran QB who ranks as one of the top three passers in NFL history.  Jerry wouldn't release him because he didn't want to take a chance on Romo leading the Broncos or Texans to the Super Bowl while the Cowboys and Dak floundered, which they did.

Romo's only options were to come back and sit the bench in Dallas or retire.  Jerry got what he wanted, which is all he ever cares about.  Unfortunately for the Cowboys Jerry getting his way has made them one of the least successful teams in the league over the last two decades.

I have no use for the man, which I am sure is obvious.  But, he runs the show...make that shows...so we all have to endure his ego and incompetence.

I am going to sue Cowboys beat writer Mac Engel for copyright infringement, or at least plagiarism.  In today's column he virtually repeated exactly what I have been saying for the last year.  Who knew he reads Hogville?

Quote
In virtually every statistic Dak regressed from his rookie season, but there is no more troubling number than this: 6.8.

Dak’s passes averaged a puny 6.8 yards per pass attempt this season, down from the impressive 8.0 his rookie year.

There was zero vertical threat this season, and Dak become just another, highly conservative, check-down quarterback. He would go through his progressions, and too often he settled for the underneath throw.

For the Cowboys to evolve, Dak has to be better than a passer who settles for not turning the ball over. He has to complete the third-and-6 throw for 7 yards rather than 5. He has to put it through the narrow mail slot between two defenders for a touchdown.

The Cowboys don’t have to become the most prolific passing team there is, but what they did in ’17 ain’t enough. He has to complete down the field throws. The end.

https://www.abqjournal.com/1113306/mac-engel-the-cowboys-have-a-quarterback-concern.html

Those two yard passes to backs, the tight ends, and receivers who were either stationary or running parallel to the line of scrimmage... with the occasional Hail Mary sprinkled in... aren't nearly as productive when (a) the running game isn't consistently gashing the defense and setting up a loaded box on second and three or third and one and (b) once opposing defensive coaches have had a year to study you and realize that you aren't going to throw timing based routes to the deep middle of the field.

Romo, for all the criticism he took, excelled at throwing the ball downfield.  Unfortunately he didn't have the luxury of playing his career with this offensive line, run game, and a defense that keeps his team in games when they have only scored 10 points midway through the third quarter.

...and yet the Cowboys are the most valuable franchise in American sports.

Everyone knows the book on Jerry:
Great owner, great for the league, so good he's in the Hall of Fame.
Poor General Manager, though.

Stephen practically had to tie him down to avoid drafting Johnny Manziel instead of a offensive lineman a few years back.
He simply doesn't have an eye for picking the right players. That was mostly Jimmy Johnson, who really knew football.

The 22-year of which you speak is nearly all on Jerry Jones.

I have a lot more to say about the Cowboys (and not complimentary).

A buddy just now texted me this—9 out of the last 10 #1 seeds have made the Super Bowl. The one that didn't was the 2016 Cowboys.

  • DE FENSE!! DE FENSE!!

Listening to some sports radio this morning, as they're talking about Philadelphia. And they brought up the Cowboys for comparison/contrast.

The Eagles lost their no. 1 running back, their all-world/mvp quarterback, a key all-pro o-lineman (Jason Peters). And last night played like a steamroller. Did they look like a team that was missing so many important pieces? Their guys filled in and they just went gangbusters. On the other hand, one Cowboy starter misses a game and they fill the screen with stats about how that one guy affects the the outcome of games. The Zeke Elliot situation was so screwed, way worse than the 6 games he missed. They had a stud o-linemen out a game or 2, and that was a major talking point, LB Sean Lee is out and the Cowboys simply don't win.

The difference is some teams are pretenders, who talk about their problems, and how the next guy has to step up. And other teams won't talk much, they'll just do it!

(And by the way, I'm a Cowboys fan. But they really make it hard.)

They have now missed the playoffs in 13 of 22 straight seasons and only have a 3-9 playoff record during those 22 seasons.
No impetus to win...at least no impetus to win big. They are America's team. Like the old Cubs of ML. Their fanbase is nationwide and none of them will stop being fans if the Cowboys lose every year. Fans attend the games and watch them on TV win or lose, playoffs or not.

Jerry Jones has built an empire while losing football games.  22 seasons of futility and yet his bank account keeps getting bigger.  He's nothing more than a rich guy who owns a football franchise, but at least he is rich!  Go, Jerry!

No, I think the thread will continue as Dallas Cowboys fans continue to fill the stands like Chicago Cubs fans did for years while a subpar product takes the field, year after year.

  • Ever since the war I've had a drinking problem

Cowboys aren't that different roster wise from the consistently good NFL teams. Sure, they'll have some significant position group deficiencies but that's true of most teams. Biggest thing they lack is swagger IMO.

As for Dak, we know he can be a very efficient qb when he has a good defense, OL, and RB to rely on, even being able to go out and make plays on third down.

He hit a sophomore slump this year as most successful rookies do. OL wasn't as good, didn't have the same RG to lean on. Defenses had a year of tape on him to figure him out.

Question becomes, what will Dak do about it? Keep in mind, Brady and Sanchez were both qb's who when young had strong defense and run game to support them while they were largely along for the ride, showing flashes of greatness here and there. Brady went on to develop to the point that the team can have almost no defense or run game and they still know they can win the game. Sanchez largely stagnated. Will Dak continue to grow like Big Ben and Russel Wilson were able to do after they were forced to carry their respective teams on their backs?

Dake was abused when the OT was injured.  Defenses tees off when RB was out with little respect for a running game.  Offense schemes have produced little success even when Romo was starting. Need to trade Dez and get someone with heart, hands, and big play ability when the team needs a big play.  Dez is a drama queen that only makes a big play every once in a while and just enough people stay excited about him.  Dallas is as close as any team at being very good, but they won’t make necessary changes to become a great team.

Well. considering your team won nothing you must be a scum fam. of a scum team, celebrating nothing.
Only in that the Cowboys won them.

Scum fans, of a scum team, celebrating like scum.

  • So many social engagements, so little time.

Bad news for my fellow Dallas brethren…I don't think our NFC-East bunk-mates in green are going away anytime soon.
