A-State Notes
« on: November 07, 2017, 06:37:25 pm »

From Blake Anderson's weekly conference call, and their game notes.

Open date came at a good time, and players focused on getting their bodies healthy. Did very little hitting.

Starting RB Warren Wand around 80% but could play Saturday. Starting tackles Lanard Bonner, and Jaypee Philbert, along with starting center Jacob Still have been hobbled, but will be ready.

On defense, backup DEís  William Bradley-King, and Griffin Riggs, were banged up but will be ready Saturday, but  LB Tajhea Chambers is doubtful.

Did not like how the offense performed against NMSU, and worked on fixing the problems, but nothing major.

Defense played great.

The A‐State defense hasnít allowed any points in the third quarter in five of its first seven games, including the UAPB contest and all four Sun Belt games.

A-State has never lost to USA.

Arkansas State has won 44 of its last 51 Sun Belt Conference games (.863 winning percentage) to run its all-time record in the league to 77-43.

A win Saturday will make them bowl eligible for the seventh year in a row
.
The Red Wolves went over 400 yards in six of its first seven games this season for the first time ever as an FBS member (1992).

Arkansas Stateís 5-2 record matches its best ever through seven games since joining the FBS in 1992.  The only other time A-State was 5-2 through seven games was in 2011, when the Red Wolves went on to finish with a 10-3 record.

In an article in today's Jonesboro Sun it was noted that, "Blake Anderson was noticeably uncomfortable when the subject of the Arkansas Razorbacks came up Monday. This time the Arkansas State football coach didn't have an anecdotal story ready to share at the Razorback expense." .

I'm sure his good friend on the Hill, was pleased with that.

LITTLE ROCK ó Brian Early, the defensive line coach at Arkansas State, is among 56 assistant coaches nominated for the Broyles Award, which is named for former Arkansas coach and athletic director Frank Broyles. A number of Broyles' assistants became head coaches.

Offensive coordinators from Alabama and Clemson and defensive coordinators from Georgia and Notre Dame were also among the nominees.

Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame and Clemson top this week's College Football Playoff ratings and Associated Press poll.

Under offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, Alabama averages 477 yards and 41 points per game. Clemson's Tony Elliott directs an offense averaging 443 yards and 33 points per game.

At Georgia, Mel Tucker's defense gives up fewer than 12 points a game. Notre Dame's Mike Elko runs a defense giving up fewer than 18.
