WBB Exhibition tonight
« on: November 02, 2017, 07:51:34 pm »

Down to DII Northeastern St 38-35 at half. No feed, so commentary is just based on stats.

Unsurprisingly, CMN has not been able to turn a team that can’t shoot into a team that can overnight. Just brutal shooting — Mason is 0-6 and Monk is 1-7. Monk is doing well at the FT line, though, with 5-6. The only offense is coming from JUCO transfer Northcross-Baker, who has 14 at half on pretty decent shooting (and 5-7 FT).

NESU is basically just chucking up 3’s and after starting off fairly cold, they shot them over 50% in the 2Q. No way to tell if they are contested or what, but ... that’s not good. Lol.

We were up big in both quarters only to have NESU sort of charge back on 3 balls. Also, it seems clear that CMN is running out folks to get a look at them, not necessarily playing a “best 5” out there.

Still .... I stand by my prediction that this is going to be a looooong year. The future is brighter, but season 1 looks like a slog. We’ll see, though — I have certainly been wrong before. And like I said, I’m just commenting off the live stat feed. Hope someone who is there can chime in later!

Second half begins ... with 5 missed shots by the Hogs.

NESU up 40-37, 8:11 to play in 3rd.

good to see Cosper heat up, especially in the second half and fourth quarter, 31 pts isnt a bad night.  I thought Thomas showed promise as well.  Stout, Spangler and Weaver didnt have very many minutes. Monk, and Northcross-Baker played well.  Mason had an off night shooting but contributed (nine points) .  Williams had foul problems.  Zimmermann had hustle, but a poor shooting night as well. Swenson didnt play much either, only nine minutes, 0-2 from the field.

Pretty good analysis for someone who probably did not attend the game.  I did.  Exciting offense - fits Cosper and Northcross-Baker really well.  Monk of course likes to go fast, but needs to look for open players instead of shooting when she drives.  Thomas did not look good in the first half, but did in the second half - will definitely help.  Williams - too much foul trouble - had same problem last year.  Mason got comfortable in the 4th quarter - shot was flat early.  Offense does not fit Zimmerman or Swenson who played the 4 position.  You have to be able to have a quick release in this offense or be able to fake the 3 and drive to the bucket which Zimmerman and Swenson can not do.  We also can not play Zimmerman at the 4 in the SEC which she was playing today.  Every player has to be able to score in this offense.  Arkansas took 74 shots and 25 free-throws.  First three shots, players would have been benched last year even though they were great shots.  Going to coaches luncheon on Monday - interested to see what he has to say.

stats dont lie, they just dont always tell the whole tale!  Pretty good analysis by someone who did attend the game, Coach!  I figured that with Zimmer and Swenson, I suppose the same holds true with Stout, Spangler and Weaver?

Great to get the W, to see Cosper light it up, and to see what Northcross-Baker brings! Thanks for the on-site analysis, LBBBF!!

Stout, Spangler and Weaver did not play enough to give any accurate comments, besides Spangler and Weaver are true freshmen.  Weaver being a bigger girl and a post player, may not develop until her sophomore year or even later.  I have seen that happen with a lot of post players.  The fact that these three played little in an exhibition and were the last three off the bench says a lot without me commenting.
Some other thoughts on the game: I do not believe we ever got down to single digits on the shot clock - what a difference from the last two coaches.  I can not remember one possession where we tried to pound it into the post - another significant change from last year.  I do not expect that to change either.

Cosper has always been a scorer. Part of the problem was every time she got hot she would get taken out by the previous coach.

with respect to Cosper - from his comments you could tell that MN had a lot of regret for what some of these girls went through and that he has a lot of respect for Devin (whom MN called Dev) who he said will light it up for 40-50 points sometime this season.

http://www.arkansasrazorbacks.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Devin-Cosper-NSU-Web-Cover.jpg

For those of you who asked where the points were going to come from this year.  I told you back then that Devin Cosper was a proven scorer, and a freshman JC all-american, a rarity. MN said last night in his interview (he talked quite a bit about Cosper) that this sort of system is the one that Cosper ought to always play in, that she is a dynamic scorer, that she can score from distance and if you get up on her, she can drive for the score.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – University of Arkansas graduate student Devin Cosper scored 31 points, including 16 points in the fourth quarter leading the Razorbacks to an 82-74 win over Northeastern State in exhibition action in Bud Walton Arena on Thursday night.

The game is the only exhibition contest for the Razorbacks who open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 10, hosting Sam Houston State. The tip is set for 10:30 a.m. as part of Elementary Day.
Cosper’s 31 points led all scorers and she was joined in double figures by newcomer Raven Northcross-Baker with 17 points and junior Malica Monk with 14 points in the win.
• Arkansas went on a 12-0 run in 1:56 to take a 14-4 lead at the media timeout of the first quarter
• Newcomer Raven Northcross-Baker hit her first three shots – all 3’s
• Raven Northcross-Baker finished with 12 points in the first quarter and 17 points in the game
• Arkansas held NSU without a field goal for more than three minutes in second quarter
• Arkansas trailed 38-35 at the half
• Devin Cosper hits a layup and was fouled, making the FT to tie the game in the 3Q
• Arkansas never trailed in the fourth quarter
• Devin Cosper scored 16 points in the final 10 minutes of the game
• Arkansas committed just nine turnovers in the contest
• Malica Monk played 34 minutes, scored 14 points had seven assists and just one turnover
The RiverHawks caught fire in the second quarter outscoring Arkansas 24-15 as their 3-point shooting heated up. NSU finished the night with 13 3’s but key baskets from Cosper and sophomore Jailyn Mason swung the momentum in Arkansas’ favor.
Arkansas took a two-point lead into the fourth frame after a layup with 11 seconds on the clock in the prior period. That is when Cosper took over hitting 6-of-9 from the floor including a 4-for-4 performance from distance. Mason added nine points as the duo played the entire 10 minutes of the frame.
The Razorbacks stretched the lead to as much as 11 before winning by eight when the final buzzer sounded.
