God he loved Oaklawn and thoroughbreds.  If he were to be cremated, I
hope his ashes are spread over the circle.  Fun guy who made a lotta kids

My mother was our cub scout main mom or whatever, called and asked if he could come down to McGehee for some shindig we had going on (1975 or so). Word got out and so many other kids wanted to see him that the cub scout thing was scrapped and he wound up doing an impromptu-type show at the hs gym. Half the town showed up.

I got to spend time with him pre and post makeup. Very nice man who enjoyed what he did.

True.  I watched Bozo's in other cities sometimes in our travels just to compare them to our Bozo (Gary), he beat everyone of them I remember seeing.  He really enjoyed what he was doing while some of the others I saw were doing it as a job.

I remember watching it one day and Bozo picked this one little boy from the group to play the balloon game, he was looking a little timid yet pained at the same time, I knew this look, being a kid myself at the time.  He had both hands held together tightly in front of him and when Bozo got to him he first asked him one of his trade mark questions,, do you walk to school or carry your lunch?  The boy leaned over to Bozo and whispered, (of course the mike was right there in front of his mouth), I need to go to the bathroom!!  Gary stood up and smiled really big at the camera and pointed the boy to go over to a waiting person in the wings.  He was a great guy for kids for 25 years, worked at Oaklawn and loved horses throughout his life and does anyone remember what commercial he used to do here in Arkansas all the time?  Hint, it was for a food product.

Years ago the local network, at the annual Christmas party, an executive announced that they were getting a clown show from national and somebody had to be the clown.  He then pointed to Gary.  The whole house broke out in raucous laughter.

As time went by, Gary turned it into a pretty nice gig, doing kids birthday partys and the show.  He made good money, and they weren't laughing any more.

Yeah, I could run home from Terry Elementary in 1st through 4th grades in 1968 through 1972 but was impossible to run home from Carver Elementary in 5th grade due to it being out by the airport. Desegregating schools did nothing for either race.

I used to run home from elementary school to watch Bozo.

School was right across the street from our house and we used to watch the Bozo show every day even though we were supposed to be doing our assigned chores. Mom would get home right around the time the show was going off and we would all spring up from the couch and start throwing stuff under the bed and shoveling stuff in the closet to make it look like we had cleaned up and put our stuff away. The person responsible for the kitchen would sometimes just take off out the back door if it couldn't be fixed in the time it took for mama to park the car and come in the house.

We still talk about the Bozo cleanup to this day.

Love your avatar... had a couple of uncles over in Lonoke/England area that used to dirt race cars back in the 50's and 60's.  Worked on 'em all week to race on the weekends.  Gave a farmer's sons something to look forward to, they always told me.

Some info on Bozo the clown:

Bozo the Clown is a clown character whose broad popularity peaked in the United States in the 1960s as a result of widespread franchising in early television.

Originally created by Alan W. Livingston and portrayed by Pinto Colvig for a children's storytelling record album and illustrative read-along book set, the character became very popular during the 1940s and was a mascot for record company Capitol Records.

The character first appeared on television in 1949 starring Pinto Colvig. After the creative rights to Bozo were purchased by Larry Harmon in 1956, the character became a common franchise across the United States, with local television stations producing their own Bozo shows featuring the character. Harmon bought out his business partners in 1965 and produced Bozo's Big Top for syndication to local television markets not producing their own Bozo shows in 1966, while Chicago's Bozo's Circus, which premiered in 1960, went national via cable and satellite in 1978.

The most notable performers to have played Bozo, aside from Colvig and Harmon, include Willard Scott (1959–1962), Frank Avruch (1959–1970), Bob Bell (1960–1984), and Joey D'Auria (1984–2001). Bozo TV shows were also produced in other countries, including Mexico, Thailand, Australia, Greece, and Brazil. Larry Harmon claimed that more than 200 actors have portrayed the clown.
