Five questions and a prediction with Mississippi State reporter @WillSammon http://www.al.com/auburnfootball/index.ssf/2017/09/5_burning_questions_prediction_9.html …

Quote
For the first time since last October, there will be a top-25 matchup on the Plains.

No. 13 Auburn (3-1, 1-0 SEC) hosts No. 24 Mississippi State (3-1, 1-1) on Saturday at 5 p.m. on ESPN.

1. After a loss like the one Mississippi State took against Georgia, what's the mindset of the team this week and how do they regroup against an Auburn team coming off its most complete performance of the season?

Sammon: They know they screwed up. Actually, the leaders on this team said they acknowledged on Thursday that practice during the week leading up to the Georgia wasn't being taken as seriously as it should have been, but by then it was too late. It was a wake-up call for a team that was told they weren't that great in the preseason and then were suddenly crowned the best [along with Georgia] behind Alabama.

They were looking past Georgia?

Wildcat trickery, deep passes highlight another efficient performance for Jarrett Stidham

Quote
Tigers were drawing opposing defenses in with the Wildcat package. Each time, Kerryon Johnson or Kamryn Pettway took the direct snap and ran the ball. The results were always promising; just look at Johnson's five-touchdown performance against Missouri.

As Johnson put it earlier this week, "good things happen" when Auburn goes to the Wildcat.

On Saturday against Mississippi State, Auburn took that "good thing" and elevated it with a new wrinkle to the formation. Offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey, who brought his own flair to the package this season from Arizona State, reached into his bag of tricks and came up with a 49-yard reverse pass from Jarrett Stidham out of the formation during No. 13 Auburn's 49-10 win against No. 24 Mississippi State

"We've been waiting for that all year now," Johnson said. "We just knew one team was going to go for it. He was wide open and it worked for us. It was a great catch even though the guy recovered. Those plays, they go one way or the other -- it's either an interception or a big play, and thankfully it was a big play."

Another lopsided loss is a bad sign for Mississippi State

Quote
AUBURN, Alabama — A question of what Dan Mullen would communicate with his team during Mississippi State's bye this week after its second straight lopsided loss produced a rare postgame moment of spontaneous introspection.

Apparently, Mullen isn't "super-sensitive." It's something his wife Megan actually is and, perhaps, he said, it is something he should work on. He instead tends to stick to the facts. He is blunt.

The aforementioned candor was present seconds later.

“We had a bunch of penalties on offense. We gave up a bunch of big plays on defense,” Mullen said after No. 24 Mississippi State lost 49-10 to No. 15 Auburn. “Do you expect the outcome to be any different?”

Big plays and false starts. It sounds like the title of a bad, ripped-off movie. And Mississippi State (3-2) doesn’t get a positive review after it, either.

“We did everything wrong that you needed to do right to win a game on the road,” Mullen said.

Earlier this week, Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen was asked, "Which is the better team, Auburn or Georgia?"

Mullen, who faced both teams in back-to-back losses for State, was in a no-win situation, so his answer is what you would call coach-speak.

Former Auburn coach and now analyst Tommy Tuberville joined me on The Opening Kickoff on WSNP-FM 105.5 on Thursday. I posed the same question to him.

"That's hard to say," Tuberville said. "That's a good question. They are very similar on defense. They have speed. They both have pretty good depth. They are getting better on the offensive line. That's where it really starts.

"Offensively, Auburn got off to a slow start and so did Georgia. Georgia lost their quarterback. Jake Fromm has come in and done a great job.

"I would probably say, if they played today on a neutral field, I'd give a little bit of the edge to Georgia, simply for the fact the two running backs and the emergence of the offensive line."
