Golden Lions Falls At Arkansas State Saturday Evening
« on: September 17, 2017, 09:42:05 am »

Jonesboro, AR., The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff was overcome by a tough Arkansas State defense and turnovers Saturday night, leading to a 48-3 loss in Jonesboro.  This is the second consecutive game, where the Golden Lions played up against an FBS school.

The Golden Lions (1-2) fought well early, and found themselves down 20-3, with several chances to put points on the board against the Red Wolves (2-0) after a 30-yard Jamie Gillan field goal with 9:51 left in the second quarter.

From there, the Red Wolves capitalized off UAPB turnovers. The home team rattled off 28 straight points to a stingy defense and unrelenting rushing attack.

The Red Wolves, who average 82 yards per game rushing, finished with 137 yards on 37 carries for a 3.7-yard average.

UAPB tried to make things interesting in the second quarter behind its defense, stopping Arkansas St. at the goal line and forcing them to turn the ball over on downs, right before halftime.

After the first of three passing touchdowns from Arkansas State quarterback Justice Hansen, the Golden Lions trailed 20-3 with less than 8 minutes left in the second quarter, UAPB responded by driving down to the Red Wolves 37 yards line with the rushing attack from KeShawn Williams and Christian Jordan, but was unable to add points on the board.

True freshman wideout Orion Smith led the way in the receiving corps, hauling in one catch for 75 yards, followed by redshirt freshman Tyrin Ralph who led the team in receptions with five catches for 60 yards.

UAPB's defense was led by 11 total tackles and one tackle for loss by linebackers JontavisTesta and Je'Kevin Carter, who had 10 tackles.

The Golden Lions will start conference play on the road in Week 4 against Jackson State, Saturday Sept. 23, at 6 pm.

That goal line stand actually happened AFTER ASU scored a TD but was called back due to a lineman being downfield when he shouldn't have been. Otherwise the score would have been 27-3 at halftime and 55-3 final.
