Some of those SEC players you need to know for the 2018 NFL draft

Quote
LSU pass-rusher Arden Key. The 6-foot-6, 238-pound junior finished second in the SEC last season with 12 sacks and was also among the league leaders in tackles for loss (14.5). He missed the entire spring due to personal reasons [it's his business]. Calvin Ridley and Christian Kirk become draft eligible. SECís other "elite" player in next year's draft class is Minkah Fitzpatrick, the Alabama defensive back who led the conference with six interceptions and returned two for touchdowns. One of Fitzpatrick's best assets is his versatility. He can play cornerback, safety, nickel --

The best of the rest

We've only scratched the surface on next year's SEC draft class. Sure, the four players above are likely first-round picks, but they won't be alone.

Players like Lorenzo Carter, Davin Bellamy, Marquis Haynes, Braden Smith and Armani "Ronnie" Watts...

Alabama churns out first- and second-round picks every year, and next year will be no different. In addition to Ridley and Fitzpatrick, you could see Da'Ron Payne, Shaun Dion Hamilton, Ronnie Harrison and maybe even Da'Shawn Hand taken early in the draft. Offensive linemen Bradley Bozeman and Ross Pierschbacher will also be solid picks whenever they go off the board.

Take this to the bank if you want -- there's going to be an LSU defensive back taken high. It happens every year. The best bets next year, if they leave early, are junior cornerbacks Donte Jackson and Kevin Toliver II.

you could see Georgia's Nick Chubb or LSU's Derrius Guice get taken in the first round and maybe even become part of that conversation above. Alabama junior Bo Scarbrough also has first-round talent but has to find a way to stay healthy.

There are a handful of other backs -- Damien Harris, Kamryn Pettway, Sony Michel, Rawleigh Williams III and Ralph Webb --

Other players to keep an eye on from the SEC include and are limited to Antonio Callaway, Martez Ivey, Martinas Rankin, Frank Ragnow, Trenton Thompson, Cece Jefferson, Jordan Jones, Duke Dawson, Dominick Sanders and yes, Daniel Carlson.

Took the spring off.  What else would he take off?

NFL mock draft 2018: Predicting the top players in the 2018 NFL Draft (11/5/2017)

Quote
6. Miami Dolphins Arden Key, LSU DE:While the Dolphins would love to get their hands on one of the top quarterbacks, they take the most talented defensive player in the class in Key, who had 12 sacks last season.

8. Washington Redskins: Minkah Fitzpatrick, Alabama S: Fitzpatrick will be compared to Florida State safety Derwin James. Right now, Fitzpatrick is having the better season, and thus comes off the board first.

10. Chicago Bears: Christian Kirk, Texas A&M WR: Kirk would be a perfect fit for the Bears, especially given their lack of offensive weapons. He is the best wide receiver in this draft class [maybe ever].

13. Baltimore Ravens: Calvin Ridley: While Joe Flacco hasnít been great this year, he also needs some weapons. Ridley would also continue a trend of drafting Alabama players in the first round for the Ravens.

16. Cincinnati Bengals Roquan Smith, Georgia LB: Linebacker has been any area of concern with the Bengals. So they draft the best one in the class, as Smith has turned Georgia into one of the best defensive players in [our nation].

26. New Orleans Saints: Rashaan Evans, LB Alabama

28. Seattle Seahawks: Derrius Guice, LSU RB

Annual piece:

Michael Carvell‏ @Michael_Carvell

Question of the Day: Will any of LSUís star juniors return next season?

Quote
Donít hold your breath to see Arden Key or Derrius Guice suit up in an LSU uniform next season. Both are almost certainly gone, with Guice especially unlikely to return. Ever since last season the running back has made it clear that his goal was to declare for the NFL draft following his junior season.

Key figures to be in the same boat, but that is based largely on presumption. Reporters havenít talked to Key since his leave of absence in the spring, so thereís no telling what heís thinking.
