Gus or Eddie Sutton... which was worse
« on: December 04, 2017, 10:27:49 am »

Which was worse to Razorback fans.....

Sutton Saying "I'd crawl to Kentucky" or Gus whining about how he's treated (while already making $4.7 mil), playing the I wanna come home card and actually just using the UofA for a raise and extension?

One actually built a program here from absolutely nothing - brought success we never dreamed of in basketball.
Without Eddie building the program there would have never been Nolan and a NC.

Gus has mostly just used us to further his career.

You are comparing apples and oranges.

Simple Eddie build the Razorback Basketball Program up .
Gus was here a year and ran off to Tulsa.

Gus is the worse one for now.

Eddie moved on to another job after what 10 or so highly successful seasons. He also move to one of the top 3 Bball jobs at the time. He probably shouldn't have made the glass comment but that's it.

The two aren't even close

This... Gus used us to get more money. I seriously doubt he was ever coming back. He started enough talk to make it look like it so Auburn would raise his salary.

Not even close. Eddie put us on the map in basketball, loved the state and the fans, left blood sweat and tears on the hardwood. He said that to hurt ONE person and one person only. JFB.

I wanted Gus till yesterday. Now I'm like Scarlet O'Hara and a women scorned. I hope he loses every game and gets run out of town and over by his own bus and exiled worse than Hootie. I'd take HDN back as both coach and AD (I'm an original darksider) before I would let Gus crawl back to us.

He's dead to me know. But I still love Coach Sutton, I was about 16 when he left for KY. Still hurts, but I'm glad we got Nolan. Boy I miss those years of Razorback sports.

Guck Fus!
Answer your question! Sutton built something here, left a legacy. Gus pissed down our leg and told us it was raining. They can bury the SOB at the 50 yard line at Jordan Hare for all I care!

Also, the Gus story had more traction because people believed he might want to come "home." If it weren't for that, Auburn might've laughed off the idea that he might leave them for Arkansas and he wouldn't have gotten the extension.

Might want to make it Gus or hootie. Both did damage and I don't want either sniffing around here but that would be an interesting poll now.

Which one hurt more?

Eddie, hands down.  He actually made a tremendous contribution to Arkansas athletics.  Gus was a flash in the pan.  Watching Eddie leave after building hog bball from JuCo levels to national status was a tremendous shot in the arm for Arkansas.  It really hurt when he left.  Nolan made the pain go away, but it took a while.

I'm already over Gus.

considering what the program was like when he came here, Eddie put arkansas basketball on the road to success...  most of you have no earthly idea what Barnhill was like or the rest of the facilities.. i came here and witnessed the infamous P.T. (Duddy) Waller.. followed by Lanny Van Eman who at least put a little excitement into the program.. and then Eddie...  I know he probably regrets that statement about crawling.. but you have to admit it was a dream job for many.

Eddie was going to be fired if he didn't enter rehab when he got back from the final 4 meetings.

Instead he got the KY job.

Probably to drunk and messed up to realize what he said.

Eddie Sutton's "crawl to Kentucky" comment was worse.

Jimmy Sexton definitely spread rumors that Gus wanted to "come home," but it was never reported in the press that Gus wanted to come back to Arkansas.  If you listened to Gus' press conference after the SEC Championship Game presented by Dr. Pepper, it was abundantly clear that he wanted to continue to coach at Auburn.  If Gus actually did flirt with the notion of coming back, it didn't cost Arkansas a penny, and Auburn has paid dearly for keeping him.  As another poster said, I'm over Gus already.

Good point.  Hadn't quite  thought of Gus and Nutt in those terms but you're probably right.  It's been a few years but seems like Eddie left after he'd had about all of Frank he could stomach but come to think of it  Lou, Nolan and Kenny all either left or were fired for butting heads with Broyles.

Eddie was being honest, and later apologized for the crawl to Kentucky remark.  He did not use us as leverage to get himself more money.

Gus used us to get a better deal for himself.  But now he's going to face the same fan backlash that Houston did when he flirted with Nebraska.  Many fans never forgave him for that, and I believe that the Auburn fans won't forgive Gus either.

As long as Gus wins and beats Bama about half the time there won't be a backlash but let him have another 8-5 season there will be hell to pay.  Still more than a little surprised he stayed knowing what lays in store for him when the losses come and he knows they will because the money was basically a wash.

Coach Sutton was demonized for telling the truth. At that time, most coaches would have "crawled to KY". He just did not say it with a lot of tact or diplomacy.

Gus APPROACHED two gentleman in AR about coming to AR again after the LSU loss. When he beat GA, and for sure after the Iron Bowl, he could have told them that he no longer was interested in AR and all would have been well. From that point on, it seems he was using AR for leverage. He will never coach again in the South or Midwest at a major program if he gets fired at Auburn. I think it is that bad now with a few people with a good bit of power.

This is coming from someone who has always liked Gus and defended him.

Eddie Sutton and slow ball.  It was always fun playing keep away with Texas Tech when they came to town.  Seems like there was always a fight.  Eddie was one hell of a coach, but as I remember it, he was nearing his end at UofA when the Kentucky job fell into his lap.

The Gus Bus is out of gas so I'm not going to say anything bad about that ass.

I think Gus can coach.  Hell, better yet, he CAN definitely coach.  Not a Hugger, but certainly not a hater.  And I'm a little pissed myself, but I still want to hear "The Rest Of The Story".  Because ever since Long was fired, there were factions up on the Hill doing their own thing without complete authorizations to be doing and offering what they were.  I think the fact we didn't have an AD in place before pursuing a coach was a mistake.  Because now we seem to be scrambling.

I think that is an accurate summary. There were 2 be gentlemen in NWA and 2 in Central AR that really wanted, and thought, that Gus was going to come. I think he is the only coach AR is after, that has proven he can win in the SEC. However, the guys that went after Gus did it sort of on their own behalf, and not the behalf of the University. If Gus was universally the guy, they should have did what A&M did. Lock him up where he can't say no. There was no, and still is no, consensus.

Not a good comparison. Who remembers Hog BBall prior to Eddie? Eddie had his faults but he is a Razorback. At the time KY was the top basketball school and He took it. He should have kept his mouth shut but it was a stab at Frank. WPS

I picked Nolan's predecessor...Edward Strutten or whatever his name was...famous Kentucky basketball coach I believe he was....

Gus ...meh...not worthy of ire.  I think he will regret this decision and I doubt he will be coaching in Auburn in 3 years.  I doubt he will ever be asked to come back home.
