Instead of power rankings this year I'm doing the tiers of the SEC. An explainer below. http://www.clarionledger.com/story/nletter/the-a-gap/2017/08/29/gap-tiers-sec/611275001/

Quote
And with that, here we go:

    Tier 1
Alabama

    Tier 4

Arkansas: We're still waiting on the breakthrough season. It'll come at some point, surely.

Kentucky: It feels weird to have any preseason optimism about the Wildcats, but here we are.

State: We're going to find out about the Bulldogs in Week 3 against LSU.

A&M: Know this — whoever starts for Texas A&M at quarterback this week will somehow be your Week 1 Heisman front-runner.

Tennessee: Butch Jones said he's willing to let the QB competition go to warmups on Monday against Georgia Tech. I'm sure that means both guys look great, he says in jest.

Vanderbilt: Yeah, I guess. I like Derek Mason. I like Ralph Webb. Why not?

    Tier 5

Missouri: Offense scores points. Defense stops the other team. The Tigers have figured out the former, working on the latter.

Ole Miss: There's no Shreveport in the Rebels' future, but maybe a win in Covington, Kentucky in two weeks?

Yahoo’s Pat Forde rips SEC West: ‘Could be Nick Saban and a bunch of schmoes’

Quote
Auburn (3) flopped at Clemson, scoring six points. Auburn has averaged 8.3 points in its past three road games (Georgia and Alabama last year, Clemson this year, all losses) and scored one touchdown in those three games. Quarterback Jarrett Stidham was sacked an ungodly 11 times –  which undoubtedly is testament to the outrageous talent of the Clemson defensive front, but also a condemnation of Auburn.

Arkansas (4) was suffocated, ...

The travails of Texas A&M (5) are documented and might be getting worse.

SEC Predictions, Week 3: Tennessee-Florida, LSU-Mississippi State and several nonconference clashes with Power 5 teams

Quote
A&M is a trainwreck right now. The Aggies could barely slip past FCS Nicholls State, 24-14, last weekend after blowing a 34-point lead to UCLA in Week 1. Louisiana (formerly Louisiana-Lafayette) has averaged 45 points in its first two contests, and figures to make life stressful for the 12th Man in College Station... The pick: Texas A&M.

No. 23 Tennessee at No. 24 Florida
Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET (CBS)
The pick: Tennessee

New A-Gap: Oh, Butch Jones. And Tiers of the SEC. http://www.clarionledger.com/story/nletter/the-a-gap/2017/09/26/gap-butch-jones-latest-drama-and-more-sec/703090001

Quote
Oh, that Butch Jones.

Answering a question about how one of his players, Shy Tuttle, hurt himself (he fell on a helmet apparently, as one does), Jones launched into a diatribe, including, "What do we want out of our media? This place, with the drama."

Oh, Butch.

So a few things to unpack here:

— No one in the media actually reported the rumor Tuttle hurt himself in a fight with a teammate. Someone asked what happened. That's called reporting.

— Tennessee does have a lot of drama. It's not alone in the SEC, and college football, in that there are places where unnecessary distractions just happen with greater regularity. The head coaches never seem to figure out they're part of the problem, though.

— This all came two days after Tennessee struggled to beat UMass, and that's the real problem.

    Tier 1 (Elite)

Alabama — Repeat after me: "I do not want Bama..."

Tier 5 (Suboptimal college football teams)

Arkansas —

Tier 7 (Those tires are on fire)

Missouri —

Ole Miss (+22.5) at Auburn, 11 a.m. (SEC Network)

The Rebels only lost 66-3 at Alabama last week. A second straight road trip to that state will hopefully produce better results for Kenny and I.

Georgia (-17) at Vanderbilt, 11 a.m. (ESPN)

The Bulldogs are on a roll. The Dores are facing a third straight toughie in the SEC (Alabama, Florida, Georgia). That doesn't bode well.

Degenerate Gambler's Note: The Bulldogs have covered in five of their last six games.

Florida (-2.5) vs. LSU, 2:30 p.m. (CBS)

The Tigers lost to Troy at home last week

Arkansas (-2.5) at South Carolina, 3 p.m. (SEC Network)

Degenerate Gambler's Note: The Hogs haven't covered a spread since November of last year. That's not what Kenny wants to hear.

A&M (+26.5) vs. Alabama, 6:15 p.m. (ESPN)

SEC Predictions, Week 7: Auburn-LSU, Arkansas-Alabama and more

Quote
Last September, Auburn-LSU served as an elimination game for coaches Gus Malzahn and Les Miles. One year later, it’s obvious which man won.

No. 10 Auburn at LSU

Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET (CBS)

It’s funny how much we waffle on Gus Malzahn and Auburn. If the Tigers would’ve lost to LSU last season — which, for a couple minutes at least, they did —
The pick: Auburn.

A&M at Florida

Saturday at 7 p.m. ET (ESPN2)
The pick: Texas A&M.

Vanderbilt at Ole Miss

Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET (SEC Network)
The pick: Vanderbilt.

Bama (-36) vs. Tennessee, 2:30 p.m. (CBS)
Degenerate Gambler's Note: Alabama is 1-4 against the spread in its last four home games.

Kentucky (+12) at Mississippi State, 3 p.m. SEC Network
Degenerate Gambler's Note: Cats are 8-2 against the spread in their last 10 SEC games.

LSU (-7) at Ole Miss, 6:15 p.m. (ESPN)
Degenerate Gambler's Note: The Rebels went seven straight games without covering a spread until last week's win over Vanderbilt.

Arkansas (+15.5) vs. Auburn, 6:30 p.m. (SEC Network)
Hogs are on a slide, but what better way to turn it around than hosting an Auburn team that blew a 20-point first-quarter lead the week before? Kenny hopes Bret Bielema's boys keep it close.

How the old BCS computers rank 2017. Alabama not No. 1 everywhere.

Quote
Alabama isn't the complete, outright and undisputed No. 1 in the country.

Yes, it got every vote in the AP, coaches and FWAA polls. The Crimson Tide controls the human vote, including Nick Saban's in the coaches poll.

But the machines?

Returning to the old formula that factored into the old BCS ratings, one of the computer rankings did its part to create a little of the adversity that Saban enjoys.

Yes, the ratings by Dr. Peter Wolfe has Alabama No. 3. Not just Georgia got the edge, but UCF is No. 2.

Each of the others that have updated to reflect Saturday's games have the Tide on top. So, no worries, if the season ended today and it was still 2013, Alabama would be going to the national title game.

The computer ratings also produce strength of schedule rankings and they vary quite a bit for Alabama. They rank as high as No. 16 and as low as No. 42.
