Goodbye to "Big Papi".....
« on: October 10, 2016, 11:51:24 pm »

Hated to see the end of David Ortiz' career.
He was a good guy for the game.
Wish they could have at least gotten to the WS.
He will be missed in Boston.

Other than Holt and Benintendi the rest of the team caught "Priceitis",  the disease that makes you choke in the postseason.

No kidding and then Farrell pulls Benintendi for Young in the 7th.
That just wasn't a smart move at all.

First ballot hall of famer or will he be blackballed for steroid suspicion?

I had no problem with Young going in. But he should have replaced Bradley who was 0-9 with six Is at that point. Not Andrew.

Most overrated player in recent memory.  A DH that played with a short porch to his power side.  Couldn't hit out of a shift, and couldn't play in the field.  Not only is he not worthy of first ballot status, but he should never be in the hall of fame.  He was a good hitter, not a baseball player.
Do you honestly know how to do anything but troll?

Ortiz is one of the best hitters of this generation, top that with he is a very likeable guy. The Sox are like my third least favorite team, but their is no reason to trash the guy.

Not suspicion.  Guilt.  He's confirmed he was one of the positive test group.

Ah, here's a handy piece:

http://theweek.com/articles/645685/fraudulent-myth-big-papi
While that is an obvious hit piece, it is a fact that he popped hot for PEDs( I didn't know that before). He shouldn't get in the HOF for that reason, I still contend that you don't and shouldn't have too play good defense (or defense at all) too get in the HOF.

Hate the rules, not those that play by them.

I have a hard time calling one piece that is honest about his flaws, after a decade plus of media homages to Papi, a hit piece.     At worst, its a reminder of his actual conduct.

I have a hard time calling an opinion piece that does absolutely nothing but trash someone with the only empirical evidence the failed drug test anything other than a hit piece.

He may be a big doosh(if my experiences in Boston are any indication, that would prolly make him more liked there), I dunno the guy, but the author obviously has an axe to grind.

That isn't the argument though, do his numbers warrant a HOF spot, PEDs nonwithstanding.

Except, you know, the quotes, his behavior, his media commentary.    Those are all real things, and really reflect on him as a person and a player.

Yet, he's treated like a paragon of virtue in a sport where others with similar-- or  even better profiles--  are treated like suspects.

You won't find many lifelong Red Sox fans who dislike anything about "Big Papi" - myself included.

He was instrumental in that 2004 World Series win - finally breaking decades of heartbreak.
With major roles in the 2 world series wins that followed.

He helped transform a franchise that was known for finding ways to lose big games in every conceivable way - to being a franchise that could find ways to win. His role in that transformation will never be forgotten or diminished in the hearts of lifelong Sox fans.

What is a HOF manual? To get in the baseball HOF you should have to be able to play a complete game of baseball. He played 278 games at 1B and 2029 at DH.   How does a guy make the MLB HOF that only plays half of a baseball game?  I realize he'll get in, but he shouldn't.

Well using the bold part of your logic that means no HOF for the likes of Trevor Hoffman or Mariano Rivera. The two greatest closers in modern baseball era. After all, they only pitched on average one inning per game they appeared in and they didn't play offense. To disagree would make you a hypocrite.

Short porch? Down the line at Fenway to the Pesky pole it is 302 ft. But the majority of his RF homers were over the bullpens. A distance of 385 ft plus. That's not exactly short.
