The meet is underway. For the second year the men and woman perform on separate days with the men starting today. The Arkansas men came in ranked 5th but are performing very well. Gabe Gonzalez took an unexpected 3rd in the 10,000 to score 6 points. It has been the Jarrion Lawson show thereafter. He qualified for the Saturday finals in the 100, then made a qualifying jump in the long jump, then qualified for the 200 finals, then went back to the long jump pit and got off two great jumps to win and score 10 points. All this after he anchored the 4x100 relay team that had the fastest qualifying time into Saturday's final. Arkansas also had a 2nd qualifier in both the 100 and 200. As long as they finish the race, all finalist in the 100 and 200 will score team points. Our 3000 meter Steeplechaser also advanced to the finals. The 4x400 relay team failed to qualify as one of the few disappointments. For all results during the meet, use this link:

The meet is also being shown live on ESPN channels. Tonight it started on ESPNU and moved to ESPN2 at some point.

A&M's awful day should help, but still got to expect Oregon on the home track with King Ches pulls it out.  Where is Arkansastrack to break it down when you need him?

So where do we stand nationally counting the unexpected 6 points from Gonzalez compared to the 4x400 failure.  Net gain?  Net loss?  completely offset?

Hogz87

The 4 x 400 meter relay wasn't a failure in terms of expectations coming into the meet. Actually I think they were barely projected to qualify for the NCAA championship. They weren't supposed to make the final, but they sure as heck gave it a good run.

So in terms of projections, the 4 x 400 wasn't a loss, so Gabe's 10K was a +6 gain.

Right now, track and field news with their new projections after day 1 have this:

1. LSU - 65
2. Arkansas - 52
2. Oregon - 52
4. Florida - 51

LSU is going to be tough to catch. They actually haven't scored any points yet, but they have qualified an abundance of athletes for the finals and those athletes are supposed to place high. In all reality, the rest of the field needs LSU to "come back" to them in terms of projections. Just need LSU to lose a few points here and there.

Also, Arkansas needs to perform above expectations the rest of the meet like they have been. Jarrion and Kenzo need to combine for high point totals in the 100 and 200. Frankline Tonui needs to score in the 3K steeplechase (he wasn't projected to score at all). Our 4 x 100 meter relay team needs to score in the top 3...perhaps even the top 2...winning would be outstanding.

We need Clive Pullen to finish top 2 in the Triple Jump and we need Ken LeGassey to score in the High Jump (he wasn't projected to score at all).

Oregon is really topped out in terms of projections. They need everyone to fall back to them because I don't see them beating those projections.

Florida is in the same boat as us, they need LSU to falter a bit and they need to perform above expectations.

Posted in the other thread, but as a reminder, it is on ESPNU and ESPN.  Coverage starts at 2PM today.

did LSU have some impact athletes out of the SEC meet, or just woefully underperform? We blew them out of the water in Tuscaloosa IIRC.

SEC is about depth, while NCAA is about who has the most elite athletes.

The women are at it today and so far it has been a tough day for our women. A bright spot is the 1st place turned in by Lexi Weeks in the pole vault to win both the indoor and outdoor championships as a freshman. Her sister failed to place in a disappointment. Lexi  cleared 14' 9" but could not clear 15' 3". Despite that she was the only vaulter to clear the last two heights. Dominique Scott is presently running in the 10,000 finals and is near the lead with a few laps to go.

JHicks3636

Dominique Scott runs away from the field in the last 2 laps to win by a ton(over 10 seconds) and grab another Razorback Championship.

Rocket23

Dominique Scott won the 10,000 meters easily for 10 points.

HogsonHicks

Dominique Scott is a bad ass. She won the 10k easily, and within seconds was calm and charismatic for a great post-race interview.  She's an incredible ambassador for the U of A. Simply incredible.

Our world leading 4x400 meter relay team advanced to Saturday's finals. Takes the sting out of the 4x100 failing to advance. Oregon dropped the baton and will not advance its team. They have the most qualified runners going into Saturday.

JHicks3636

Taliyah Brooks takes 3rd in the long jump for 6 points.

Oregon dropped their baton on an exchange in the women's 4 x 400 relay.

She's recruiting for us, too.
The announcers were saying we have a freshman coming in from South Africa thanks to her.
She just blew that field away.
Quite impressive.

I'd say we're still looking pretty good. Don't know what the rest of the women's teams have but we've qualified:
#3 and 5 in the staplechase
#2 in the 400
#2 in the 4X400
Scott in the 5000
And 4 heptathletes going

Conservative estimate is 30 additional points coming.

Friday will feature all of the remaining finals for the men. Running events will start at 7:30 CDT and field events will start at 7:00. There will only be 3 field events contested today and Arkansas will have an entry in two of them-the high jump and the triple jump. At the end of the night a new NCAA Championship Men's team will be crowned. The only action for the women today will be the first 4 events of 7 in the heptathlon. Arkansas has an amazing four entries in that event. The event will conclude on Saturday.

based on what we have left running what are the chances our men win the National Championship ?

Slim and none, we'll probably finish 3rd behind LSU and Oregon.

After first event in Heptathlon, our girls stand 3,5,6,9. Hurdles were first, moving on to high jump.

I agree. Our lack of a pole vaulter, competitive decathlete, and middle and long distance running competitors are baffling.

I think you are a great poster and I greatly appreciate your insight into track, but c'mon man you are complaining about #3 in the nation. McDonnell aint comin through that door.

After the Heptathlon high jump,  Arkansas is 4-5-7-9. The shotput will be next.

The shotput has concluded. After 3 of 7 events, Arkansas stands 4-5-6-14. The 200 meter dash will end the events of the first day at 9:13 p.m. CDT.

JHicks3636

The men's high jump is underway. Ken LeGassey of Arkansas, our only entrant in the event, clears the opening height of 6' 10.25" on his second attempt. Only 1 competitor missed at that height so 23 remain alive. Bar now at 7' 0.25. The Discus is underway and we have no one in it. The triple jump is warming up. Clive Pullen who won the Indoor NCAA title is our entrant.  Running events are about to start with the 4x100 where we qualified 1st.

JHicks3636

Arkansas takes 3rd in the 4x100 in a tight race. LSU wins, Houston 2nd. Six points for the Hogs.

We needed a win, and for LSU to drop their baton, lol.

JHicks3636

Pullen fouls on his first attempt in the triple jump. He will get 2 more jumps to try to end up in the top 9 competitors to get 3 more jumps.

JHicks3636

Tonui gets up for 2nd in the steeplechase to score 8 points when he was projected for 5. Good job.

JHicks3636

LeGassey goes out in the high jump and will not score for the Razorbacks.

JHicks3636

Pullen with a poor second jump in the triple jump and he sits in 20th. He will have tons of pressure on him for a big 3rd jump to move on to the finals. This would be a big loss for us. He will have to go over 52' and his 2nd jump was just over 49'. Only takes one though.

Piglywigly

Tonui was not projected for 5 points by anyone except stupid Dwight Stone who was just going off of preliminary times which have nothing to do with anything.  No one who knows anything had Tonui projected to score.  That was a huge run by Frankline.

Coming in to the meet that is correct. After the prelims he was 4th.

hawgwash

The Devin Allen kid from Oregon who just won the 110m hurdles.  Didn't we recruit him for football a few years ago?

JHicks3636

Arkansas goes  1-7  in the 100 meters for 12 points. Lawson pulls the big upset.

JHicks3636

Jarrion Lawson is a stud. Still to run in the 200.

JHicks3636

The 400 meters, 800 meters and 400 hurdles will be the next 3 events. We have no one in them. Our next event will be the 200 meters at 9:07 and we have 2 runners in it.

JHicks3636

On a down note, Pullen fouls in the triple jump and will not advance or score.

Also, LSU's ace sprinter pulled up lame and is likely out of the 200. Oregon is down to their last two runners in the 5000.  We have two left in the 200.  I like our chances with big points in the 200 with the LSU ace likely out.

Yeah, we could actually win this thing.

Cornfed Pig

Do they have an individual award that Lawson is in the running for?

Piglywigly

The Hogs are making an unbelievable run at this.  Unfortunately, that was a monumental choke by Pullen.  Might end up costing us a national title.  Hopefully they can still pull it out.

JHicks3636

Our last scoring will come from the 200 meters. Oregon's last scoring will come from the 5000 where its runner is favored. LSU will get points in the 200 and 4x400. We just need big 200 points. It will run before the 5000 so Oregon will knows what it needs.

83grad

Florida not out of it yet.  2 runners in 400 hurdles and team in 4x400 relay. Potential of 28 more points
