U.S. Navy   1979-1983.  Served aboard the USS L.Y. Spear(AS-36), it was just a simply tremendous experience, one that I wish everyone could have known.  The best of times, the best of friends.

US Air Force - 1982-2003

AFSCs (MOS for you Army types):

Aircraft Navigator
Maintenance Officer
Special Operations Duty
US Embassy Duty

Locations:

Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX
Mather AFB, Sacramento, CA
LRAFB, Jacksonville, AR (C-130E)
Ft. Clayton/ Howard AFB, Canal Zone, Panama
Hurlburt Field, FL (Spec Ops) (MC-130H)
US Embassy, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Comments:

Flying DEWLine missions in Northern Canada was very interesting.
Panama was a great place to live.
I can't tell you about the Spec Ops stuff or I'll have to kill you.
I've traveled almost all over the world.  Norway was cool.  The pyramids don't seem as big in person.
I'm just glad to still be alive and rooting for the Hogs (My name is the in the sidewalk just east of Old Main.)

USAF 92-98
Inflight Radar Tech/trainer on the AWACS, later became dual tech on the computer.
Stationed at Tinker and deployed often.  At least once a year to each of the following
Saudi (Riyad)
Turkey (Incerlik)
Panama

I flew often enough, I still remember word for word the take off conversation.
Eng-ART-Ready for take off?
ART-ENG-Slides attached, Emergency lights armed, passengers buckled, cargo stowed.  ART ready for take off
ENG-ART cleared for walk around
ART-ENG No fires, no loose equipment, no emergencies aircraft secure
Eng-ART cleared for power up
ART-ENG Thanks Eng will notify of any power or cooling issues
ART-ASO IFF and RADAR configured and ready to transfer control. Reciever XX and xmitter XX look like best option.
ASO-ART please transfer RADAR and taking IFF.
ART-ASO thanks ASO-let me know of any trouble and give a heads up for AR please.

I literally remember every sequence like that 17 years later.  I can't remember your name 10 minutes after you told it to me.

I'm told that's part of the Vietnam era but I never left the States, was never in harms way, and the only time I picked up a weapon was to qualify on the range.  So while I served please give your thanks to those who flew the missions and waded the rice paddies.

P.S.  The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.  Thank you Veterans!
