The development he has done is phenomenal.  Imagine what he is going to be able to do now that he has a staff that can coach them up even better than what he had at Wisconsin AND that can bring in more athletically gifted football players as we saw in this past recruiting class

Great research.  Thanks for organizing and posting.  Bret Bielema is obviously one heck of a football coach.

Maybe he saw in Arkansas the same thing he saw in JJ Watt.

I'd be ok with Arkansas being the "JJ Watt of CFB teams"...

In a similar manner as to what he did at Wisconsin where as the years wore on both the amount of players drafted as well as the average draft pick both improved.  That trend is continuing here as last year we had 4 players drafted at an average pick of 172.5.  This year we had 5 players picked at an average of 163.6.

Now that he is getting better recruits (on paper anyways) I expect us to start having not only more players drafted, but also drafted much earlier then what we have seen these past 2 years.  The trajectory of the Ark football program is definitely pointing upwards...

Fantastic topic and follow up post!  I couldn't agree more about the trajectory of the program, and I believe it goes back to the way CBB seems to be as interested in developing men of character, as well as great football players.  How many guys can we all think of from back in school that we KNOW could have played, and maybe even done something very special, in college, but they just didn't have the right attitude/discipline/work ethic, etc. and they did nothing?  For that matter, how many of us have fallen short, whether in football or any other area for the same reasons?  Having a mentor like CBB can literally change a young man's life.  I wonder how many of these players would have been drafted had they played for someone else?  CBB seems to have a knack for getting 100% out of his players; he demands it.  The tricky part is making them WANT TO do the right thing, and that's what separates the current Head Hog from a lot of other coaches.

We've seen what he can do with a sprinkle of elite talent surrounded by guys who are willing to run through a wall for him.  Now, with the uptick in recruiting (which I don't see falling off), we will get to see what he is able to do with the best raw talent, across the board, that he has ever had the opportunity to coach.  It's a good time to be a Razorback.  Woo Pig!

The way Bielema got here is remarkably similar to the way Frank Broyles got here.  Broyles coveted the Arkansas job and let John Barnhill know it.  Bielema sent Jeff Long the famous congratulatory letter after Long fired Petrino.

Broyles and Bielema both saw Arkansas as having great upside.  Broyles hired assistants with aspirations to be a head coach.  He won one NC and was a few plays from winning 2 or 3 more.  It took Broyles only one year to go 9-2 and finish 9th in the country.  After that he was on a roll that would be interrupted only by a mediocre year every five years or so until he retired after the 1976 season.  The run started with 4 straight wins at the end of 1958 featuring great defense.  In 1959 the Hogs finished 9-2, culminating in a win over Broyles' alma mater, Georgia Tech, and an AP ranking of 9.

The parallels between Broyles and Bielema continue to take shape.  I'll take 11-2, a major bowl win, and a 9 ranking in 2015.

Average at UW compared to Ark
UA- #28.7 overall .33 5*, 5 4*, 15 3* 3.10 * average
UW- #41.3 overall .14 5*, 2 4*, 12 3* 2.82 * average

The development he has done is phenomenal.  Imagine what he is going to be able to do now that he has a staff that can coach them up even better than what he had at Wisconsin AND that can bring in more athletically gifted football players as we saw in this past recruiting class
A huge "shout out" for all your effort and research! Yep, while we'll have doubters, it's very obvious that despite where most of these kids are ranked going into his program the vast majority leave both better players AND better men. The future is definitely bright.

Please keep us posted on the parallels, especially for those of us who weren't around for the Broyles years.  I love the comparison, and I hope it plays out in a very similar fashion!

Bielema, simply put, has done more with less than anyone at a major.

How often did he take 25 at Wisconsin?   By not losing players he won't be able to take 25 every year like Bama does.   Another school that always has low rankings but usually has a class of about 18 to 20 is Boise State.

If you have a viable red shirt program, pick good kids that will stay with the program, and develop them physically and mentally, you'll never be high in the rankings because you aren't recruiting big classes.

I wasn't surprised when he said the 2016 class would be much smaller because of the program he's establishing.

Bielema has now had 32 players drafted that he coached while he was HC at Wisconsin (counting the 2 Wisky guys this year)

Wow.  That is SO freaking impressive!

There is so much in there that is a credit to Bret and his staffs, but the 6 no stars, walk ons and such, that were drafted -- that is incredible!

Thank you Jack for sharing that with us!

I totally agree the six no stars is extremely impressive. Speaks huge volumes about a walk on approach that really works over time. Some question whether this approach and success can be duplicated on the Hill. I ask why not?

I think it's already started working.  Johnny Gibson was our second team LT this spring.  That's no small feat in itself.

Also I believe a true frosh walk on, Patrick Reed, finished the spring as a second team corner.

Not sure who Patrick Reed is but several current and former walk ons (who have earned scholarships) factor heavily into next season:

RS Fr Josh Harris is 2nd team MLB.

RS Fr Tyler Colquitt (now on scholarship) is 2nd team FB but really is battling Walk On RS So Chris Jones as starting FB as Kody Walker is most likely going to be spending more/most of his time as 3rd team RB.

RS Sr Alex Voelzke (now on scholarship) at TE is battling Sprinkle for #2

RS So Kevin Richardson is going to factor in at FS/CB again after playing quite a bit last year

DE's RS Sr Mitchell Loewen (now on scholarship) and RS So Karl Roesler figure to factor in at DE yet again this upcoming season after playing quite a bit last year

I expect Jones, Richardson and Roesler to go on scholarship by next fall as they will now only count on the 85 as they have been here for 2 years.

Gibson and Harris will likely go on scholarship this time next year (entering RS So season) for the same reason- only counting on 85 rather then as an initial 25 counter

+1 for now, and another +1 next time I log on to hogville
Fantastic research and insight - and exactly why I don't get in a tissy we're not bringing in the recruits like Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas A + M, etc.
I'd rather be dead than be a Vol

Several of those kids, Harris, Loewen, Volkze to name three would be starters on most of HDN's teams IMO.
