Kate: New A&M athletic director Scott Woodward responded to questions about the job football coach Kevin Sumlin has done

Quote"Very impressive, coming into this tough league, started off like a house of fire," Woodward said. "It was very, very impressive watching it from a distance. You know, having this thing come back down to earth -- I guess would be a way to describe it -- is humbling. I know he wants to do better and great things and get back to where he was. And I feel the same way.

"We're all in this together. We're in a rough neighborhood, as I've described the SEC West, and we need to be pulling in the same direction and helping coach all we can. From my standpoint, that means giving him the resources and advice when he seeks it, and support. Whether it's building a better staff or support staff or anything we can do to help, we're going to be here to do so."

Q: Considering the nearly $500 million that went into renovating Kyle Field and a football coach that receives $5 million a year, what should that investment produce in the SEC West?

A: It's just what the whole university is all about. We want to be excellent and great in all we do. When I sat down with President [Michael] Young and Chancellor [John] Sharp there is a vision for greatness. We have the goals here to compete for championships, and that's in everything we do. Whether it is football, which is very important to us, or any other sport, we have very high expectations.

Q: On the relationship he'd like to have with Sumlin:

A: We talk a lot, and I see him a lot and I only know one way of doing things and that's in a close relationship and a collaborative partnership. Like I've said, I don't want to be in the way, and I won't be in the way, but I want to be accessible.

Eric Hyman, who resigned as Texas A&M's AD in January, is now working for Auburn: http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2016/03/former_texas_am_athletics_dire.html ...

QuoteFormer Texas A&M athletics director Eric Hyman will take over as chief operations officer on an interm basis at Auburn, a source familiar with the situation tells AL.com.

Hyman takes over for David Benedict, who left Auburn to become the University of Connecticut's athletics director Monday. It's not known if Hyman will stay on in a full-time role with the athletics department.

Hyman surprised many in the SEC when he resigned as Texas A&M's athletics director Jan. 5, one day after he gave football coach Kevin Sumlin a vote of confidence. Hyman helped the Aggies transition from the Big 12 into the SEC in the summer of 2012.

He previously served as South Carolina's athletics director from 2005 through 2012...

.@bmarcello gives the details on #Auburn AD Jay Jacobs' contract: http://ow.ly/ZjCus

QuoteFOIA: Jacobs' five-year contract, which he signed in 2011, has a one-year renewal option at the end of each academic year. The deal is set to expire June 30, 2020, but could be renewed an additional year through 2021 with an automatic rollover on June 1, according to the wording of the contract.

"Look, when you go 6-6 in football all kinds of rumors pop out," Jacobs said.

Jacobs is paid $600,000 per year in base salary, with several additional incentives built into the contract, which he signed in 2011. He is eligible for a raise at the end of each academic year, but an Auburn official said the contract in 2011 is the latest document Jacobs has signed.

Incentives -- academic performance, coaching performances, etc. -- can increase his salary to as much as $750,000 per year. If Jacobs is fired, Auburn owes him the full value of his base salary for each year remaining on the contract.

The bill for claims the University of Tennessee's athletic department discriminated against women's sports employees climbed Wednesday to just more than $1.2 million.

QuoteUT earlier this year agreed to pay $750,000 to settle a 2012 federal lawsuit alleging pay discrimination and retaliation and filed on behalf of three staffers — two women and one man — in the athletics department. But the university quarreled over attorneys' fees for the women's defenders, seeking to cap them at $300,000. The attorneys, including lead counsel Keith Stewart and Lisa Banks, sought $475,000.

In a ruling issued Wednesday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Bruce Guyton rejected most of UT's arguments of fee padding and awarded fees totaling just more than $462,000 to attorneys Stewart, Banks, Kristen Galles and Stacey Sisco.

"In making this finding, the court has considered the good results achieved by the plaintiffs, the fact that there were three plaintiffs involved in this case, the number of years spent litigating this action and the factual complexity, including the reorganization of (UT's) athletic departments," Guyton wrote.

Jenny Moshak, former associate director of sports medicine, and Heather Mason and Collin Schlosser, former Lady Vols strength coaches, sued UT after a departmental consolidation that followed the women's filing of internal pay discrimination complaints in 2010.

UF athletic director Jeremy Foley to retire - via @Gator_sports http://www.gatorsports.com/article/20160613/ARTICLES/160619952?tc=cr ...

QuoteJeremy Foley is retiring, effective on Oct. 1, the school announced this morning.

Foley, the driving force behind UF's overall athletic success, is one of the most respected athletic directors in the nation. He is in his 25th year as the AD.

Foley began his UF career in the ticket office.

Foley, 63, announced his plans to the Gator coaches and staff earlier this morning. Foley will continue as athletics director until Oct. 1, when a new athletics director will hopefully be identified.

He will stay involved with the University as Emeritus Athletics Director, which is part of his current contract agreement...

Under Foley's watch, 27 Gator teams have won the national championship, including three in football [and two in basketball]. He is tied for the most national titles among sitting athletic directors.

QuoteFlorida president Kent Fuchs now faces the daunting task of replacing Jeremy Foley, who will retire on Oct. 1 after 25 years as the Gators athletics director.

"If I could clone Jeremy Foley and take off 20 years, that's the ideal person," Fuchs said.

Fuchs said Florida's former board of trustees chairman Manny Fernandez has agreed to lead the national search. Foley also will assist Fernandez and Fuchs in finding the next AD.

Two prominent names with ties to Florida, Steve Spurrier and Duke athletics director Kevin White (father of UF basketball [head coach] Mike White), won't be candidates for the job simply because of their age.

Mike Hill

Florida Executive Associate Athletics Director (external affairs)

Hill was hired by Foley in 1993 and appears to be the most likely member of his staff to receive the promotion. Hill's responsibilities include overseeing the men's basketball and tennis...

Bernard Muir, Stanford Athletic Director

Stanford is the only program in the country that's been able to match the success of UF athletics under Foley, and Muir was born and raised in Gainesville

Greg Byrne, Arizona Vice President for Athletics

Byrne, 44, is the son of long-time Texas A&M athletics director Bill Byrne and has experience in the SEC. He was the associate AD at Kentucky for four years before his move to Mississippi State, where he was promoted to athletics director in 2008 and hired Dan Mullen away from Florida.

Who will replace Jeremy Foley at Florida? - via @Gator_sports http://www.gatorsports.com/article/20160617/ARTICLES/160619785/1136/FRONTPAGE?p=all&tc=pgall ...

QuoteUF is forming a national search committee that will be chaired by former board of trustees chairman Manny Fernandez.

Florida apparently will target current or former ADs from around the country.

"We want an experienced athletic director, someone that's not going to come and learn on the job," Fuchs said.

Here are some possible/potential candidates that the search committee could target:

Bernard Muir, athletic director at Stanford -- Muir has successfully led one of the country's strongest overall athletic programs since being hired in 2012, and he's certainly familiar with the University of Florida. His family moved to Gainesville when he was in third grade and he grew up across the street from Westwood Middle ...

Greg Byrne, athletic director at Arizona -- Under his leadership, the Wildcats have undergone major upgrades in the football and basketball facilities. The school recently completed construction of a $72 million football facility and an $80 million renovation of the basketball arena. He has experience in the SEC, where he was the AD at Mississippi State. He hired Dan Mullen away from Florida to be the Bulldogs' head football coach in 2008. Byrne, 44, is the son of former Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne.

Joe Castiglione, athletic director at Oklahoma -- The former athletic director at Missouri (1993-98), Castiglione has elevated OU athletics...

Chris Del Conte, athletic director TCU -- Since being hired as AD by TCU in 2009, the school's football and basketball facilities have undergone a major upgrade at a cost of $236 million. The school has also renovated its baseball facility...

John Currie, athletic director at Kansas State -- Inheriting a significant budget deficit when he became AD 2009, Currie has turned KSU into one of the NCAA's most solvent programs, while initiating $192 million in comprehensive facility improvements –

QuoteFor more than a year, Alabama athletics director Bill Battle has known he has cancer.

Diagnosed with multiple myeloma last May, Battle has quietly gone through treatments in Tuscaloosa. He'll take a few weeks away from the office this summer getting a stem cell treatment in Atlanta. His situation is not considered life threatening and the treatment is routine, doctors said.

But what is multiple myeloma?

The rare form of cancer starts in the bone marrow, according to Emory University -- where Battle's stem cell transplant will take place. Only 30,000 people are diagnosed with it annually and it's mysterious because experts aren't quite sure what factors put people at risk. It's most common in people over 65 and African Americans are twice as likely to be diagnosed than white Americans...

QuoteIn Damon Evans' six years as athletics director (July 1, 2004 until his ouster almost exactly six years later), Georgia teams won 11 NCAA titles and 23 SEC titles. In McGarity's six years, there have been four NCAA titles and 19 SEC titles.

McGarity was at Florida for nearly two decades under Athletic Director Jeremy Foley, who is set to retire this fall after establishing Florida as the SEC's preeminent all-sports power. Foley is reputed to have started his tenure by asking each of his head coaches whether they could win a national title at Florida, and if they said no, they were soon gone.

"Sure. I would say the same thing," McGarity said. "Absolutely, these are destination jobs. They're not a stopover."

QuoteTom Green: With Jeremy Foley stepping down this fall, the title of longest-tenured AD in the SEC will fall to Kentucky's Mitch Barnhart, who is in his 14th year as the Wildcats' AD. But not far behind him is Jacobs, who is in the midst of his 12th year running Auburn's athletics program.

"You begin to just look at the AD world, and there's a lot of younger guys coming in," Jacobs said. "I know a lot of coaches have turned over at different places because people expect excellence, but that is what's great about the SEC: It's demanding and we all demand excellence and that creates change, and for the most part, everything that has happened to the SEC has been positive change."

Indeed, the SEC has had a fair amount of turnover in the AD department in recent years. Seven of the conference's 14 schools have hired a new AD in the last five years, and Florida will be the eighth when it finds Foley's replacement.

That's more than half of the SEC.

Ole Miss AD Ross Bjork is in his fifth year, as is South Carolina's Ray Tanner. Tennessee's Dave Hart Jr. is winding down his fifth year, and this football season will mark the beginning of his sixth.

Alabama's Bill Battle — who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer — is in his fourth year, while Vanderbilt's David Williams will enter his fifth year next month. Missouri's Mack Rhoades is in his second year, and Texas A&M's Scott Woodward is midway through Year 1 with the Aggies.

The other three, Mississippi State's Scott Stricklin, Georgia's Greg McGarity and Arkansas' Jeff Long, are in their seventh, sixth and ninth years, respectively.

So what has been the key to longevity for someone like Jacobs in such a demanding profession?

"Well, my whole deal is I'm not about longevity; I'm about doing what's right every day," Jacobs said. "I'm interested in making sure we continue the longest run we ever had in Auburn history of not having a major violation. I'm interested in making sure that we continue to grow the number of more than 390 now students with a 3.0 (grade-point average), and I'm concerned with doing what's right every day."

John Clay: Mitch Barnhart's salary appears crazy, until you look at the bottom line

QuoteKentucky had extended Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart's contract through the year 2022, with hefty pay increases along the way.

According to the terms, the AD's base salary will go from $730,000 to $840,000 in 2019 to $880,000 in 2020 and $925,000 in 2021. Also included are retention bonuses and delayed compensation pointed toward the 56-year-old's retirement package.

We can argue the merits of such a deal. Yes, Barnhart hired Billy Gillispie, but he also hired Rich Brooks, John Cohen, Rachel Lawson and Edrick Floreal, among others. Power 5 conference schools are now employing ADs he trained — Scott Stricklin (Mississippi State), Greg Byrne (Arizona), Rob Mullens (Oregon) and Mark Coyle (Minnesota).

And here's what cannot be argued about the new contract: Despite the eye-popping numbers, UK can afford it.

UK's athletic department is almost entirely funded by its revenue and an annual payout from the Southeastern Conference, and those revenues have climbed at an astronomical rate.

Thanks to the lucrative launches of the College Football Playoff and the SEC Television Network, the SEC reported 2014-15 revenues of $527.4 million, a 62 percent increase from the year before. UK received $31.2 million from the league, a payout nearly $11 million more than the school received the year before.

In 2013, the last time Barnhart's contract was amended, a USA Today study showed the UK athletics director ranked 24th nationally and ninth in the SEC in base pay (then $650,000). When Florida's Jeremy Foley retires Oct. 1, however, Barnhart will become the longest-tenured AD (14 years at one school) in the conference.

There's a reason for that.

Combined athletic revenues of 48 schools in the wealthiest conferences went from $2.7 billion in 2004 to $4.5 billion in 2014. Despite that, many of those schools operate in the red. Kentucky isn't one, however. UK's revenues went from $66.7 million to $95.8 million over that period, and the department remained in the black.
