In another win that will likely look solid by the end of the season, Arkansas staked its claim to being the second-best team in the SEC by beating SMU on its own home floor 78-72. Forward Bobby Portis led the way for Mike Anderson's team, scoring 22 points on 13 shot attempts. The Razorbacks are now out to their first 4-0 start since 2007, which is incidentally the second-to-last time they made the NCAA Tournament. On the other end, Larry Brown's team is now out to a 2-3 start without Markus Kennedy around...

Bill Nichols: SMU can't handle aggressive Arkansas in SWC rematch

UNIVERSITY PARK — Much has changed in the 20 years since Arkansas last played at Moody Coliseum.

But the former Southwest Conference rivals played as if the league title were on the line, and though refurbished Moody was much livelier, the scoreboard flashed a similar result: Arkansas 78, SMU 72.

It was the Razorbacks' 13th straight victory in the 155-game series. They have won six straight at Moody.

No. 25 Arkansas (4-0) matched the point total of its last visit to the Hilltop, a 78-66 victory on Dec. 8, 1994.

The Hogs also applied the same kind of breakneck pressure to force mistakes and take control.

Portis Has 22 as No. 25 Arkansas Wins 78-72 at SMU

Playing as a ranked team for the first time in seven years, No. 25 Arkansas established itself quickly against SMU.

The Razorbacks never trailed against the Larry Brown-coached SMU team that rarely loses at home, getting 22 points from Bobby Portis in a 78-72 win Tuesday night.

"A lot of people don't win here, so it was a big opportunity for us," said guard Michael Qualls, who scored 13 points. "That would be horrible news just to hear we broke the Top 25 to come lose a day later."

Arkansas went ahead to stay after Portis made a 3-pointer for the game's first basket, holding on after an SMU surge in the second half, to improve to 4-0 for the first time since the 2006-07 season.

SMU (2-3) was No. 22 in the AP Top 25 before consecutive road losses last week against No. 10 Gonzaga and Indiana...
