I love our second unit.

Waldron_Hog

Durham with 6 pts 5 boards 6 assists. That's a pg stat line
Portis stuffed the sheet.
Madden stats are better than I thought he played.
Qualls quiet.
Jacorey had a nice game.

Atlhogfan1

Hogs were on pace for 74 FGA's at the half.  Ended up right at their avg for last season at 61.

18 assists to 12 turnovers, caused 22 turnovers
12 steals
7-15 from 3
52.5% for the game.
The bench shot 17-28 for the game, 4-6 from 3.

That was totally unexpected, at least for me.

We already know what the starters can do - and they'll be called upon more heavily when we face legit competition - but it's nice to know most of our bench is now serviceable.

Qualls, Portis, bell, and madden combined for 28 points and we won by 30. That is crazy since they are likely our best 4 offensive weapons this year...we are deep!

Still can't stand Harris' game. I think he is the main reason we start slow. The ball doesn't move well with him in the game. He can make a play and get to the rim, but it usually comes outside the flow of the offense. Just my critique.

He's just got an awkward game. From being undersized, to battling in the post, and that fadeaway jumper. But then you look down at the stats and his numbers look good.  He drives me crazy, but I'm glad we have him.

Atlhogfan1

Kingsley with 15 minutes again.  10pts with only going 2-6 from the line.  2 reb, blk, 2 stls

This team seems to have a lot of pieces but I'm just not sure how they fit together.  But it is a week before Thanksgiving which gives Mike a while to find the answer as to who to play with whom and for how long.

Yeah, Harris is a ball stopper. His one on one play will come in handy this season when our other options are struggling to score, though.

Harris is our 1st option at Power Forward right now, when really he should be a three.  That being said, he's got the want to to go get rebounds, he plays good defense, and he is really working in the offense.  He's really been making smarter decisions this season, he's brought his turnover percentage down while keeping his usage rate the same, which means he's doing positive things with those possessions that used to be turnovers.  His PER has nearly doubled from last season.

He's in his 2nd year in CMA's system, and CMA believes in him.  Let's not make him the BA of the basketball team, where we have a guy that's playing really well, that other schools would want and talk like he's the worst player on our team, because he's not.

My guess is around 14,500. Lower level about 90% full. Upper deck about 20% full.

Slightly Bigger Ben Gordon anyone?

Great guy to have when he is hot or when you need a bucket, otherwise, team looks better without him. He makes for a pretty easy mismatch on defense also.

I'm not going to pretend I know anything about WF, but I know I liked what I saw with the guard play, shooting, team play and effort.  I'm tapping the brakes a little till I see them grind one out on the road but I think this year's team has a chance at being REALLY interesting.

I agree. IMHO the starting line up should be:

PG Beard
2G Madden
SF Qualls
PF Portis
C  Kingsley

But then I'm not the one who gets paid big money to make those decisions.    :)

Really like what I seen from Big Mo last night. He showed a lot of athleticism for a guy his size around the basket. I'm thinking he's our best low post player and a most have for when this team is forced to run it's half-court offense.

The only way I see Kingsley and Portis in the starting lineup together is if Thompson's progression comes along a lot sooner than expected. And if so we could run Harris and Williams/Miles in alongside him to help out on the glass. These our the times in which I really miss guys like Hunter Mickelson.

I'd rather have Williams in the starting lineup in place of Harris, but I guess Williams would be a defensively liability. Does he play the three or four spot?

It does to me, too. Harris would be really good with guys like Kingsley, Watkins, Miles who are defenders but struggle creating their own shot.
I'm sure MA considered that but I believe he ultimately opted for our second unit to be all about hustle and ball movement, albeit with less talent than the first string.

BRHogfan

If you make Harris the 6th man, his usage rate will jump up to like 60%.

The_Iceman

My biggest concern with the lineups is starting two SG's, then having two PG's in the second group. The first group lacks chemistry. Here is the way I would do it:

Durham / Beard
Madden / Bell
Qualls  / Watkins
Harris  / Williams
Portis  / Kingsley

I like Durham starting the game with a pass-first mentality getting all of the other players easy buckets. The first group didn't have a distributor.

swinesation

Starters - 38 pts (3-9 3-PT), 4 steals, 5 assists, 14 rebounds

Subs - 45 pts (4-6 3-PT), 9 steals, 13 assists, 20 rebounds

DANG! Mike needs to put these stats on the bulletin board!

I think Jacorey's minutes and responsibility will continue to grow... he played a nice game and has been as consistent as anyone so far this year.. he is a real stat stuffer... ther's only one way to look at his game last night and it is by giving him more to do, leadership wise... imo, he'll be on the floor when the final horn sounds at the Big Dance.

mhuff

Except for a few minutes that we lost the eye of the tiger and started playing "rat ball", we played a solid game. The points on TO's got us over the hump and established a good lead. Then we maintained pressure throughout the game except for a few players who got left behind on defense a few times.

"Rat ball" is what Kansas played against Kentucky.

After looking at the stats, Williams, Beard, and Kingsley had really good games...... Jacorey is really playing money ball. Working hard on the rebounds and got some assists. I hope he continues to improve...... We need him. Plus, Durham really got in there and rebounded.

When that happens, it's like the ball is kept on the perimeter and good ball movement and inside play is lacking...... when offense looks lost...... We are just gonna have to improve our chemistry and half court offense. You are right on needing distributor..... We have been lacking one for years.
