According to a report from AL.com, the Crimson Tide Foundation paid off Saban's $3.1 million home in January 2013 even though the organization was under no obligation to do so.

The Sabans, who bought the 8,759-square-foot home in 2007, continue living there with the foundation picking up the tab for property taxes each year.

"It's not all that unusual in the world for universities to provide the housing," Scott Phelps, assistant secretary of the foundation, told AL.com, noting how the University of Alabama also owned the home of Paul "Bear" Bryant and his family. "We want to keep him happy. We think he is the best coach in America."

But typically the university/foundation owns such a house.  At this point they don't.  When he finally leaves he gets the proceeds.

The payoff of the mortgage also represents W-2 income to Coach Saban, not that he minds.

....or the compound in Costa Rica.

The one where they genetically engineer Alabama football players from the DNA found in the petrified jockstrap of Bronco Nagurski?
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

C'mon now... everyone knows Nagurski couldn't even walk-on at Bama these days.

We're talking Uruk-Hai breeding pits.  Hardest part is to keep them from eating the footballs.

+1 for the LotR reference!

Wonder who else's housing they've paid off over the years.

And now we learn how the slush fund works...

Saban made a couple of bad investments and this was part of the lure to keep him from going to Texas to cash in. Nothing shady or unethical about it.

Yep....& a little trickery involved with the statement by Phelps.

Interesting... a little misleading statement by Scott Phelps the assistant secretary for the foundation.  He said it was "not unusual for universities to own the houses where their coaches live"....& said the U of Alabama also owned the house of Paul Bryant.  Making it sound like the University or foundation also owns the house where Saban lives. Just like above post states...Saban owns this house, so it's not the University's property.  Nice the U of Alabama is paying the property taxes each year too.

Gee.....with that kind of deal, I could afford to live in a $3.1 million dollar house.  Might have a little problem paying the electric bill......
