Using the old pre 2004 point system, Jeffy would be racing for number 7, and would pretty much be a lock at this point of the year
.
He would be 42 up after Martinsville

His four championships occurred in 1995, 1997, 1998 and 2001. Add 2004 and 2007 if under the old scoring system.

Depending on who you root for, the chase is the best thing ever, or the worst.

I love the chase and really like the new chase format this year. I'm rooting for Gordon to win it !

You cant compare like that though.... teams use different strategies based on how points are accumulated each year..... He may or may not have won those years...

It was just based on points earned for races ran.  Who knows

I understand... it just sucks that nascar cant leave anything alone.... we need to go back to old fashioned racing... like we used to

I'm glad that baseball added wildcard teams years ago and I love the fact that so many guys have a chance to be champ in this new format. I really hated the points racing system.

I've been playing my own championship format this year just to keep things interesting.

Each race, the last place finisher (among the group still eligible) is out until you win again.  If you don't qualify for a race, you are out for the year.  Each win gives you a mulligan for a finish that eliminates you.  The more you win, the more mulligans you get.  The last race of the year is for all the marbles among those still alive.  These are left:

DALE EARNHARDT JR.
CARL EDWARDS
JEFF GORDON
JIMMIE JOHNSON
BRAD KESELOWSKI
JOEY LOGANO
KURT BUSCH
KEVIN HARVICK

Next year maybe they'll give a trophy to every team that makes the Chase and do away with a Championship.  Everyone wins!

please.  This format puts major emphasis on wining races all year long not points racing. Much better than guys just riding around each race trying not to wreck and being thrilled with finishing 9th

Escaped from hogsgrl's basement.  Can you believe she made me watch an endless loop of highlights from all of Jimmie Johnson's championship seasons, while her autographed Jimmie Johnson life-size cardboard cutout stared at me from the corner of the room?

Yikes! She must be hot for you not to leave after Championship 3.

She is hot, but the door was barricaded from the outside by a wall of die-cast 48 cars.  Ain't no one hot enough to make anyone want to watch Championships 4-6.

This isn't working as quickly as I intended.  She usually comes out from under her rock faster than this.

These seven survived the weekly elimination.  They would be eligible to win the championship.

Finalists

1 JEFF GORDON
2 JOEY LOGANO
3 DALE EARNHARDT JR.
4 BRAD KESELOWSKI
5 KEVIN HARVICK
6 CARL EDWARDS
7 JIMMIE JOHNSON

They are ranked by points earned for the season.  Real points, not the manufactured chase add on points.

All used mulligans earned from victories to cover some poor finishes.

I would set their order of start at Homestead based on this ranking.  Everyone else would have to go through regular qualifying.

From this point, the highest finisher at Homestead would be the champ.

Any thoughts

Scew points racing. I like guys busting their ass to actually win races all year long. That has added excitement. Now if thy can just repave all those mile and a halfs in a way that bunches up the cars  ;D

The purpose of this new format was to limit the Hendrix cars that won 6  of 8 Championships since 2006. And by golly it worked.

And now 7 years scoring the most points.
