BATON ROUGE – LSU has petitioned the NCAA and the SEC to wear white at home. ... Got it.

LSU has asked the SEC to let it play as many night games at home as possible. ... Got it.

LSU has begged, pleaded and ordered the SEC to change its West-East scheduling philosophy so it will not have to play Florida every season, but no one outside Louisiana has ever understood its "equitable scheduling" argument, including Florida. ... Not happening.

Oh well, two out of three is not bad. So there may be room for another small request.

SEC OFFICE: "OK, LSU, what do you want now? Blackened redfish at all away games?"

LSU: "No, what we want is to not have to play on the Friday after Thanksgiving any more. You're making us play at Texas A&M on Thanksgiving this year, but there is no way we are ever playing at home on Thanksgiving. And we don't ever want a Thursday night home game."

SEC OFFICE: "All right, all right, we'll see what we can do."

LSU: "And there's one more little bitty thing."

SEC OFFICE: "Geez, what now?"

LSU: "Well, we have this tradition ..."

SEC OFFICE (Interrupting): "Another tradition? We gave you the white jerseys at home. You got all night games this season. How many traditions can one school have?"

LSU: "Well, there's this thing about Halloween. It means a lot to us."

SEC OFFICE: "You won one big game on Billy Cannon's punt return 50 years ago, and you won't let it go."

LSU: "Yeah I know, but you've got to admit it was pretty cool."

SEC OFFICE: "We're not replaying that game on the network. There's the punt return and the goal-line stand. That's it."

LSU: "No, that's not it. We're wondering if you can move Saturday's Ole Miss game to Halloween Night."

SEC OFFICE: "What?"

LSU: "We have an open date on Nov. 1 so we could play on Halloween Night. It's a Friday."

SEC OFFICE: "Uh, small problem. Ole Miss plays Auburn on Nov. 1."

LSU: "To hell with Ole Miss..."

Misery Index Week 8: Negativity in Norman

Disclaimer: This isn't a ranking of worst teams, worst losses or coaches whose jobs are in the most jeopardy. This is simply a measurement of a fan base's knee-jerk reaction to what they last saw. The way in which a team won or lost, expectations vis-à-vis program trajectory and traditional inferiority complex of fan base all factor into this ranking.

2. Florida: The breaking point with Will Muschamp and the Florida fan base occurred a few weeks ago, probably in that overtime victory against Kentucky when it became obvious the Gators offense was still a mess. Florida fans know what a good team looks like, and they weren't seeing it that night, regardless of the outcome. And even though change is starting to look an inevitability at Florida — which typically turns misery into a light at the end of the tunnel — Saturday had to be the lowest of the low points for the Gators. Can you imagine being a fan of that team and having to watch a game at home in which Missouri led 42-0 without even 100 yards of offense? Can you possibly conceive what that might be like? It's hard for other fan bases to know that feeling because it practically never happens. To wit, ESPN dug up a statistic that that college football teams are 147-2 over the last 10 years when holding an opponent to 120 yards or fewer. The only two losses? This game, and Muschamp's 2011 loss to Florida State. In other words, not only did Muschamp do something Saturday that never happens to anyone else but it was the second time it's happened to him.

3. Texas A&M: It probably wasn't real fair for Texas A&M to play Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Alabama — arguably three of the five best teams in the country — right in a row. The kind of physical and mental toll that can take on any team, especially one as young as Texas A&M, is hard to quantify. Still, don't Texas A&M fans have to be at least a little concerned about the lack of competitiveness the Aggies have displayed against those three teams? If you rewind to August, Texas A&M fans knew this was going to be a more challenging year with a younger team and no Johnny Manziel to cover up the problems. But it was important for the Aggies to maintain some momentum, to keep convincing fans and recruits that their history of underachievement as a program was long in the past. Maybe next year all those five-stars that Kevin Sumlin has signed will start to play like five-stars, but it's hard to maintain the 'it' factor as a so-called "up-and-coming" program when you get beat 59-0 by Alabama. Right now, the narrative on Texas A&M leans more toward a lot of style and swagger with very little substance to back it up.

As previously described in our game of the week entry, LSU can't expect much from its quarterback in Saturday's matchup against the fearsome Rebels defense. It gives Ole Miss a tremendous advantage to be able to stack the box against the run, but LSU has the horses to give the Rebel defense its toughest test of the season. Tigers senior RB Terrance Magee is coming off a career game with 220 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns...

To put Kiffin's tumultuous exit in context, Vol Nation was at a deliriously happy moment. Two days earlier, Bruce Pearl's short-handed basketball team had stunned No. 1 Kansas.

That was on a Sunday. Tuesday night, we media types were summoned after dinner to a 9:30 news conference. Kiffin was leaving for Southern Cal.

We rushed to the Lawson Center at the south end of the football facility and assembled in the room used for Athletics Board meetings. It was Bud Ford's unfortunate duty to preside over an unruly scene.

Ford served more than four decades as an athletic department spokesman. In hindsight, he said that's one event that should never have happened. Mike Hamilton, the athletic director who was on a flight home from Colorado, agreed.

As a rule, coaches don't hold press conferences to say they're leaving. They just leave. But Kiffin wanted to explain his hasty exit.

And he wanted to do it on his terms. That's where things turned weird...

Scheduled to be on the sideline Saturday against the Vols.
