If Romo is finished for the year I am going to have some free time on Sunday afternoons. I'm not about to waste my time watching some hapless stiff like Brandon Weeden and the best record in the league turn into not being able to beat anyone...and going from first to missing the playoffs.

Weeden was doing great with the 1st string. Not even the doctors can tell Romo, "No."

Yep.  Right after Romo's injury Murray breaks one for 51 yards inside the Washington ten.  Shortly thereafter he runs it down to the Washington three.  Second and goal on the 3 yard line.

What does Garrett do?  Does he give it to the NFL's leading rusher, figuring he has two (maybe three) attempts to gain three yards and score a TD?  Of course not.  He has his backup QB, who hasn't taken a single snap all year, attempt two passes.  Brilliant.

Then, in OT...on first down Murray rushes for 8 yards.  Second and 2.  Do we run it even one more time to try to get a first down and keep the game going?  No, we throw three consecutive passes even though the blocking package hasn't been able to keep the Washington blitz off Romo all night.

Romo had 0 time to throw. It was ridiculous.

Even if you're not a Redskins fan (I'm not), and especially if you're not a Texas fan (I'm not), you still had to feel good for Colt McCoy last night.  He got treated like dirt in Cleveland, and he'll never be a top tier QB in the league (maybe not even a starter), but last night he laid it all out on the field and won a game that was obviously very meaningful and important to him.

Kudos to Colt.

Weeden looked better than Romo last night. They should have at least let him finish the game. Romo was off all night. Even before the injury.

Dr. Starcs

How 'bout dem Cowboys!!!!

8-3. I honestly still don't expect them to make the playoffs. But their year has sort of mirrored what the hogs have done. Built their team around their offensive line. Power running game. And a vastly improved defense.

EastexHawg

NBC flashed a stat up last night.  I think it was that since 2008 Romo has led more 4th quarter or overtime comeback wins than any QB in the NFL...27...with Peyton Manning and maybe Matt Ryan tied for second.

It's crazy that Romo has somehow been tagged by some as a QB who doesn't get it done under pressure.

Dr. Starcs

He was tied with Payton and Ryan till last night :)

And that was since 2006

bennyl08

Romo is a great qb in the middle of the season. Most qb's would not have the same success Romo has had behind the OL, running game, and defense he has had to work with most of his career. They key exception here being Rogers who had a terrible OL, no running game before Lacy, and no defense and still kicked some tail.

That said, how many 3 INT games has Romo had in week 17 games where it's a win and you're in situation? Basically, Romo is the anti-Eli. Baby Manning is usually pretty terrible in the regular season, and the main reason he has as many 4th quarter comebacks as he does is due to his own mistakes earlier in the game. However, while Eli is often a key factor keeping the Giants out of the playoffs, he turns it on in order to get into the them as well, and once in, they may have lost to Rex Grossman-led redskins twice, but they'll come in and win the superbowl somehow.

Romo's had a great o-line, run game and defense most of his career?

Think back to the 2012 season-ending loss in Washington, for example.

Late in December and in January the teams that are most successful are typically those that can run the ball.  It takes weather out of the equation for the most part.  The Cowboys' defense was battered that season.  Shawn Lee, Jay Ratliff, Bruce Carter, Barry Church, and Orlando Scandrick were lost for the season.  They played the Redskins with their two best remaining defensive linemen, DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer, crippled by injuries.

Robert Griffin only threw for 100 yards in that game, but he didn't need to move the team through the air.  Alfred Morris ran for 200 yards and three TDs.

Meanwhile, Romo never had a good offensive line or running game in the first place until this year.  The Cowboys' offense has been based on him not only throwing the ball, but throwing it vertically down the field.  To make matters worse, Dez Bryant, Miles Austin, and Dwayne Harris were injured during that particular game.

Romo threw a TD pass to one of his remaining warm bodies, Kevin Ogletree, to draw Dallas within three points with six minutes to go.  The Cowboys then stopped the Redskins to force an apparent field goal attempt, but a roughing the passer penalty gave Washington a first down and another Morris TD run put the game out of reach.

Yes, Romo threw interceptions...but he was dealing with backup receivers and a porous offensive line.  He was also playing catch-up the entire game.  If you've followed the Cowboys over the years you realize that's been pretty much a recurring theme.

Every QB throws interceptions.  For some reason, Romo's clutch drives to win games are pretty much ignored but his interceptions are hashed, rehashed, and hashed again.

Dr. Starcs

Spot on easttex. And you brought tons of facts to the argument. Unfortunately, it won't matter to the haters.

Here is the only fact that matters:

Playoff Record as Starting QB: 2006 (0-1), 2007 (0-1), 2009 (1-1)

How many playoff games did Troy Aikman win during his last five years in the league?

One.  "He" was 1-3, winning a first round game in 1996 before losing in the second round...and losing in the wild card round the next two times "he" made the playoffs.

Gee...do you think his supporting cast could have had anything to do with his W/L record?

I don't believe that at all. I say the opposite. They don't ask you to throw the ball 50 times a game if you have a great running game. The O-line was a weakness until they recently started making moves to improve it. It's paying off.

Who said that? Most of career he's been running for his life, while having to win with the passing game. There's a reason it always seems he's playing with a broken rib or something.

But Aikman came up big in big games for Dallas - especially against San Francisco in the playoffs.  That's what I want to see from Romo - do something in a big game to earn this sort of status.

Don't you think having an overwhelming talent edge around you helps your odds of "coming up big" against tough opponents, especially in the playoffs?

Erik Williams...All-Pro.  Madden called him the best lineman in football before his injury
Larry Allen...All-Pro, Hall of Famer.  Madden called him the best in football after Williams
Mark Stepnoski...All-Pro.  Named center on the NFL's All-Decade team of the 1990s
Nate Newton...All-Pro, Six Pro Bowls
Mark Tuinei...Two Pro Bowls
Kevin Gogan...although a backup, he was named to three Pro Bowls in his career

That's the greatest and most dominant offensive line in history.  When you combine it with the leading rusher in the history of the league, a Hall of Fame wideout, a five time All-Pro tight end (Jay Novacek), and a two-time Pro Bowl fullback (Moose) to clean up anything the offensive line may have missed...well, let's just say that Aikman didn't have to go it alone.  He had plenty of help.

By the way, Aikman threw three interceptions, at least one of them a pick six if I recall correctly, in an NFC Championship Game loss to the 49ers.  Bernie Kosar, who I think was about 67 years old at the time, finished off another of the NFCCG wins over San Francisco after Aikman was knocked out of the game.

That's because during that era the only teams Madden saw were the Cowboys and whoever the Cowboys were playing that week.

America disagrees.

No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."
