BATON ROUGE – While watching LSU film over the past week, Kentucky coach Mark Stoops got an early Halloween fright.

"One thing that I see is absolutely tremendous speed on the outside, and that scares you," he said.

Halfway through the season, though, LSU (5-2, 1-2 Southeastern Conference) has not scared anyone entering its game against a vastly improved Kentucky (5-2, 2-1 SEC) at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Tiger Stadium on the SEC Network.

In their only two significant victories, the Tigers had to come from behind in the fourth quarter to beat Wisconsin, 28-24, in the season opener and against Florida, 30-27, last week. In the two losses to No. 1 Mississippi State and No. 8 Auburn, LSU looked awful at times.

"We haven't played our best for a whole game yet," LSU offensive guard Vadal Alexander said. "But we're really excited to be back home in Tiger Stadium, and we're ready to go play a great team. We're going to get going."

And not a moment too soon. No. 3 Ole Miss (6-0, 3-0 SEC) will be at Tiger Stadium next Saturday night after hosting Tennessee (3-3, 0-2) Saturday night, followed by No. 7 Alabama (5-2, 2-1) on Nov. 8 after an open date.

"We'll play better next week, and we'll play better the week after that," LSU coach Les Miles said after escaping Florida. "And there might be something pretty special coming this season for these LSU Tigers."

How LSU plays over the next three games will decide if this is a rebuilding year or if it will be the Tigers' fifth straight double-digit win season.

Seven minutes and 56 seconds. Then, five minutes and 18 seconds.

Two weeks ago, that's how long it took for South Carolina to complete its first two drives, gash the Kentucky defense on the ground, and expose the Wildcats' weakest link on that side of the ball. The Gamecocks rushed on 17 of their first 19 plays (23 of their first 30), eventually amassing 282 rushing yards. That was a season-high for a Kentucky defense otherwise much improved from last year.

Of course, Kentucky overcame an early 14-0 deficit, and beat South Carolina 45-38...
