Tennessee's defense held Utah State to 97 yards on 34 plays in the first half and never allowing the Aggies to cross midfield. The Aggies were 1-of-7 on third-down attempts in the first two quarters, and Tennessee's defense allowed the Vols to take a three-score lead into the break despite a mostly lackluster offensive performance to that point. The defense had a few busts early in the third quarter, but it held firm and got some stops and held the Aggies to just 151 yards of total offense after three quarters.

Highly touted freshman tailback Jalen Hurd didn't have much room to run when Tennessee handed him the ball, but he created some room when he had a sliver on a screen pass on the first play of the fourth quarter, and he rumbled 15 yards for a touchdown...
