None of it bothered Temple, none of it mattered. Never mind that the Owls were two-touchdown underdogs. They embarrassed Vanderbilt, 37-7. That's the proper word for it. The home team used three quarterbacks and each struggled more than the previous one. (The third threw an interception on his first play in, and it wasn't his last.)

A defense that struggled to hold leads last season dominated the action against a Vanderbilt team that had its entire offensive line back from a 9-4 season. A tough debut for new coach Derek Mason, who came in from Stanford when James Franklin left to take over Penn State...

Well, that may be exaggerating a bit.  I'm not sure anybody in the nation ever thought of Vandy when the subject of SEC power came up. 

Vandy is just back to being Vandy after a 3 year aberration.  They'll be in a tussle with Kentucky for the basement by year's end.

Anchor Down?

This was more like Anchor Downpour.

First from the sky. Then on the scoreboard.

Vanderbilt's utter futility in a 37-7 loss to Temple in a game that lasted well into Friday morning was an ugly blast from the past. It was a reminder of how bad things once were and made you wonder whether this was a step back toward the bad old days.

It was as if the past three years never happened for Vanderbilt football. A program that went to three straight bowl games and was a combined 18-8 in the previous two seasons was no match for a team that went 2-10 last year and is picked to finish near the bottom of the American Athletic Conference this season.

They have unfinished business they need to make right.

A different kind of anchor will weigh them down.

One day later, it turns out Vanderbilt's football jerseys with the slogan "ANCHOR DOWN" on the back are not legal after all.

The Southeastern Conference released a statement on Friday stating the jerseys do not meet regulations and cannot be worn again.

"Vanderbilt has been notified it cannot wear the slogan on its jersey for future games and has agreed to comply."

Athletics communications director Rod Williamson said:

"It's an easy fix. We're going to take 'Anchor Down' off because we clearly have to and we're fine with that. We realize now that that wasn't right. We're going to put the last names on the jersey and it's all good. It's just a flap you take off and replace.

"It was an honest miscommunication. We sent an email design concept to the NCAA football rules committee, got a cursory response, which says, 'It looks good to us.' We thought that meant every piece of the communication was fine. If anybody wonders if we're unhappy, no, we're completely fine. It was just an honest miscommunication. We thought we had clearance to use the slogan, obviously we didn't."

Williamson declined to provide the email sent from the NCAA stating the uniform design was OK.
