Yes the Horns wanted Saban, I do not believe they wanted Jeff Long.

Of course they did.  LSU still wants Houston Nutt to this day.

Yes, and I turned down 1Billion$ to sell popcorn at the closest intersection....

I would strongly believe if Saban was offered $100MM from any university or college or high school.... he'd be there in a heartbeat....

BTW, FWIW, Coachspeak 101, Lesson #2:

Question:
What is "I plan on being here a long time - retiring here"?

Answer: What Mike Anderson told the Missouri reporters who were badgering him about the Arkansas job before he had a firm, "commitable" offer for that job in hand.  At the time the questions was asked and answered, it was an accurate response.

Of course, nimrod Mizzou fans who had not yet passed CS 101 actually thought that was absolute confirmation that he had no interest in the Arkansas job.

Texass boosters shooting off their mouths about offering Saban $100mm is all this trash talk is about.  How bad does it make your program look if you offer a coach that kind of money and he turns you down all to have to take your 5th-6th choice in Cholly Strong?

Texass (and I unfortunately live here rather than NWA) legs are in a big ditch..  Saban's no mindreader to figure that out....

Gosh, with all the "he says, she says" on this subject and the real question as to whether a FIRM offer was ever really tendered this could almost be a redux of the infamous "It depends on what the meaning of the word "is", is" beauty offered up years ago by ole Willie Clinton. In the end we all know that UT being who and what they are can't help but talk a big game and story but rarely ever live up to all their hype and bullsh%t. They just can't help themselves. Gosh, who knew?

Screw the 100 million dollar package. When we were looking for a coach, I was for Arkansas passing an amendment to legalize casino gambling and paying Saban a $100 million per year from the taxes raised.

"Texas was dead serious about trying to money-whip Saban. Depending on whom you talk to -- Bama big hitters or Texas big hitters -- the Longhorns were prepared to give Saban somewhere between a $12 and $15 million signing bonus and a salary package worth $100 million (plus performances)."

Bama & UT Big Hitters...yeah, those are some reliable sources right there.  ;)

Charlie Strong was their 6th choice? I thought he was pretty much the top pick behind the rumored Saban/Gruden/etc choices.

I doubt Saban was offered anywhere close to 100 mil to move to Texas.  If he was and refused it, that just shows you how dumb of a coach can take BAMA to National Titles.

Saban, in my opinion, has always been about #1.

I find it difficult to believe he'd walk away from $100M.

Saban did not turn down 100 million plus a 10-15 million up front signing bonus. No coach in America could turn down that offer. NFL or College.

Theres enough athletes in texas to go around. You also forget texas has more tradition and history than both of those schools combined. Being in the SEC isn always a factor neither. Consider florida state, louisville, and clemson. And the states of the last two dont have near as much talent or quantity as texas. Strong is also a defensive specialist so that will really get texas going.

Son....Texass is done. They will never again dominate college football again. They haven't in several years and Charlie Strong isn't going to be their savior. A&M will for the most part, out recruit Texas from now on.

Now see if you can weave this into one of your show and tell Q&A threads.

The landscape of college football has changed. Texas will have to navigate around Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, Baylor isn't going anywhere as long as Briles is there. Hell, Art turned Texass down. Anyhoo, they aren't winning anything.

What makes you think charlie strong isn fit to do so? Hasn his rep at florida and lville said anything? And lets not act like texas hasnt been relevant in 10 years. They were just in the national title game 4 years ago. They arent that far in the dumps. What you are saying about texas is probably what everyone was saying about alabama during their rough years. Auburn and LSU were frequent divisonal champs. Alabama was arkansas' equal for the longest even. Got saban on board and they havent beat them since. Why? Put a good coach with a tradition rich program with exceptional instate talent, they will thrive. Texas is long from never dominating again.

Texass is done dominating...and as an Arkansas fan, you should be tickled pink..

Charlie Strong isn't even in the top 2 coaches in the state of Texas. I actually would put him no higher than 4th. Sumlin, Briles and Patterson are all better coaches IMO.

But if you want to keep pimping how great you think Charlie Strong is as a coach and the greatness he will deliver to the University of Texass, may I suggest you take your show and tell, Q&A show over to a shortwhorn board.

im just speaking from a college football perspective, not a hog perspective. Just keepin it real. I never said i wanted him or texas to do good. Just said how he may do with the resources and tradition there. Hog fans would be tickled if texas was done dominating. But the problem is theyre not. But as shown many times, many hog fans live in a distorted reality and end up disappointed when true reality hits. But thats how it goes.

Besides, why be happy if Texas struggles anyway? It isn benefitting us. They still own a 56-21 head up record

Agree completely.

How about the fact that Alabama all but FLAUNTS the fact that they pay players and neither the SEC or NCAA will lift a damn finger to do anything about it. Hell, Saban's buddy, Mike Slive actually THREATENS the NCAA on behalf of Nick Saban and his crooked ways.

Boston RedHogs

A "$100 Million offer from Texas"....what does that mean??

Does it mean they were going to pay him $25 Million per for 4 years?
Does it mean theY were going to pay him $10 Million per for 10 years?
Does it meaN they were going to pay him $5 Million per for 20 years?

I think all can agree that every scenario above, as well as all of those in between, are absurd and Finebaum is full of it.

NO WAY THERE WAS A LEGITIMATE, COMMITTABLE OFFER FROM TEXAS FOR THAT KIND OF MONEY.....THAT'S STUPID; EVEN FOR THOSE STEERS IN AUSTIN.
