I am looking at an anniversary trip but will likely take the kids (14 and 10). Next winter during the kids holiday break, post-Xmas.

I thought I'd check with the experts here (and by expert I mean, "I have made this trip or know someone well who has").

Is either/both something you'd do with family?

Where would you go/stay?

What activities at your city of destination would you recommend?

Critical Suggestions?

I know we've had a Belize thread but I wanted to frame it as a specifically FAMILY outing. :) Thus, hookers, casinos and cheap booze is not necessary for the trip to be fun. Well, cheap booze, maybe....

You can't beat Costa Rica for safety, super-nice people, beauty, etc.

I'd fly into San Jose and then drive up to La Fortuna to see the Arenal Volcano for a couple of days.  You can get bungalows facing the volcano and it erupts every 3 or 4 hours and is gorgeous, especially at night.  It's actually safer that it is like a clock and releases pressure and is at a very safe distance.  It's highly monitored.  There are some "hot springs" heated by the volcano you can go to and just go from one natural whirlpool to another, one with a slide, pool side bar, etc. - and watch the volcano.  Coolest thing I've ever seen.  Best food I've had in Central America and cheap anywhere you go in this area.

Then I'd hit one of the coasts and do the beach thing.  Great beaches.  Just kind of depends on what you like, Costa Rica has it all.  They really take care of their ecology, and you'll see all kinds of beautiful country - very green.  Some of the other Central American countries many times have either generic gringo sides of "fake" nature(think Cancun), or the more "natural" areas are real dirty.  You won't get this in CR.  You can go up into the mountains and they live simple but are clean and friendly.  They have a 95% literacy rate.

If you have time, San Jose is great, too.  There is a downtown seedy area, so I'd suggest more doing stuff on the outskirts.

I can get you some more specific places if you want, but you pretty much can't go wrong with Costa Rica.  That was the last place I lived before I moved back to the U.S. and if I could find a way to get a job again back there I'd move back in a heartbeat.

Anytime brotha.  Ugly Uncle would be the Belize expert.  Let me know if you have any other questions.

This is a pic of me in El Salvador a few years ago at a volcano called Izalco in Cerro Verde.  This volcano is inactive, and there are several inactive ones(if anyone is concerned about Arenal being active) in Costa Rica, also.  Again, I'd suggest CR because El Salvador (as well as some of the other CA countries) are not safe right now(IMO) especially with the MS-13 gang so active - but I just wanted to give you an idea of what it looks like, because the topography/ecology is so similar.  I feel safer when I'm in Costa Rica than I do in most major U.S. cities.

I'll try to locate some of my CR if I can.

You know that I love Belize.  There is a ton of great stuff to see and do there.  Most of my experience has been the non-vacation type stuff though.  If you like diving, snorkeling etc. you can't beat it.  I would highly recommend it for your family.  You can go see some of the most amazing Mayan ruins in the world, and be back out on the Cayes before sunset.  Caye Caulker is where my family (that lives down there) will go for a day or two of rest when they need to get away.

Here is a link to it:

Altun Ha is where we go to see the ancient Mayan city.  Here is a link about it.  It also has some other interesting info about Belize.

Now Shanon is right about Costa Rica and might be better for a family outing.  Belize has some downside to it.  The roads are not great and it is definitely a third world country.  However, it is an English speaking country and will give you great time.

Here's another pic of those heated waters at Arenal.  Again, there's a hotel there on site(or bungalows outside), very affordable massages, all the "conveniences" you want - but a lot of ecotourism all around you also.  There's a real cool horseback ride you can take up to a waterfall, etc., zip lines and a canopy tour cable car that takes you up over the rainforest trees so you can see stuff up there you normally wouldn't.

One cool aspect of Costa Rica and why it's friendlier and safer for Americans than other places, is that you will see Costa Ricans vacationing also.  It's not like Mexico or other C.A. countries where they can't afford to enjoy all this stuff also.  That's why they don't resent Americans and why they take care of their environment.  Even though they earn a lot less than Americans, they are only charged about half of what tourists are, so they can enjoy their own vacation spots.  They are super-friendly and love to talk about Costa Rica.

However, I will say that you can't beat Belize for snorkeling, beaches and affordability.  If that's more what you are going for more than a combination rainforest/cultural/beach thing, then Belize might be a better deal.

Just FYI - I had friends that were robbed in Costa Rica. This is the post from her facebook page. So if you go be careful -

For the friends who have not already heard, our dream vacation to Costa Rica turned in to a nightmare! We fell victim to what we have learned is a common crime on tourists in Costa Rica. While we arranged for a rental car near the airport, someone (more than likely an employee of the rental car company) punctured one of the tires creating a slow leak. A few miles down the road, we were forced to pull over, and Lynn began changing the tire. Someone was obviously following us and waiting for this to happen. A young woman walked up and began "helping" us. She distracted our attention while an unseen partner stole my bag containing all our credit cards, my passport, driver's license, phone, etc. Once the spare was on, the young woman walked calmly away. We got back in our car and realized what had happened. We spent the rest of our time in Costa Rica in police stations, the American embassy, and a courtroom where Lynn testified against the man who was found with our credit cards and my altered passport!

You're more likely to get robbed in Little Rock.  This is extremely rare in Costa Rica - it is far from common.

Costa Rica is the safest of all the Central American countries, including Belize - and safer than most major cities in the U.S.

They key is using a reputable travel agency and not try to do all the planning(such as the rental car) yourself.

That's all fine and good, but the man asked for people that had firsthand or knew well someone that went there and advice. Having had friends that were there less than a month ago and knowing that Oklahawg was talking about taking his family I felt it was pertinent information so he could make good decisions. I wasn't trying to compare it to Little Rock, the rest of the world or the moon. Just want him to come back safely if/when he decides to go.

And when I was at Arenal 2 years ago it was no longer erupting at night, just some light steam coming out.

I am in Belize now, but I'm working in inner city Belize so I haven't had much tourist time.  Our plans were to go out to the Cayes one day, but because of our flight being cancelled in Dallas and having to fly to Miami to get to Belize we lost a day.

They tell me one of the safest places in the World is out on the Cayes.  As far as any kind of violent crime or snatch and grab.  It is because there is now way off the Island except for the water taxis.

Belize City is definitely a third world country and you have to be very careful.  I've been driving some kids around all this week and got lost a couple of times and never felt threatened, but I've been here enough to know places to avoid.

Today we took the kids out to Old Belize.  It is actually somewhat of a resort and one of the nicest places you will find anywhere.  They loved it.

If you are going to Belize, go to Hopkins or the Cayes.  You will never go any place more beautiful.  DO make a trip to the Belize zoo though.  They have only animals you might see in the wild of Belize.  I was blown away by it.

If you want your kids to experience a true third world, plus the beauty of some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere then Belize is your answer.

You can't go wrong with Costa Rica either.  I like them both.

UU, You mentioned Hopkins. When the parents were missionaries there in the mid sixties, I was one of the first white kids to ever go there. We had to go by dug-out canoes to get there. they had never seen blonde hair and blue eyes before. They tried touching them because they thought we were blind. Pretty traumatic for a small child.

The thing to remember when traveling in any country in Cental America is that they are a third world country and you will find bad elements, but you'll also find some of the sweetest people in the world as well.

Costa Rica was incredible.  I spent a week in Santa Teresa out on the west coast.

I N C R E D I B L E.

We flew in to San Jose, took a charter over to the peninsula and then a taxi to Santa Teresa.  We rented a 4 wheeler for the week and mostly guided ourselves.  We just stayed at a villa we rented on the beach.

I just can't say enough good things about that country.  I have never been more relaxed in my life than that week.  The food was great, the people incredible, the scenery was awesome, the fishing was great...

It's just hard to put in to words how great it was.

This is a picture a couple hundred yards down the beach from where we stayed in our private villa on Santa Teresa.  If the cameraman walked backwards he would get to where we were.

There were about this many people AT MOST on the entire beach line the week we were there.

Some people say it's one of the top 5 surfing beaches in the world.  There were a lot of surf shops and American surfers that had moved there.   Looked too scary to me with how big the waves were.

Awesome.  It's really hard to describe to people how great the atmosphere is there, unless you've been there.  Totally different than Mexico or any other C.A. country where you do have to watch your back.

It goes back to the education and literacy rate.  I won't bore everyone with all the details, but there's a reason behind it.  The president in the 1960s dedicated a ton of $ to educating the population.

Absolutely.  Had some gallo pinto at near every meal.  It was great.  Drank a lot of Imperial while there.  It really is an amazing country.  I told the wife we should just cancel our plane tickets, liquidate our accounts, and live in a little place on the beach there.  It seemed like a lot of other people from around the world had done the same thing.

There are much more 'developed' areas of Costa Rica, but down in Playa Santa Teresa you get the feeling of what Costa Rica was like a few decades ago.  You can take some cool day trips to the other towns on the peninsula as well.  Montezuma is a pretty hip town around the tip of the peninsula and Monzanillo is a cool place up the beach.  Montezuma is a big gathering place for hippies and artists.  There's a fun hiking area there as well.

Cool.  I never made it out there, but I guess I'll have to next time I get to go.

I've got a great recipe for gallo pinto, btw.  I've perfected to the "Salsa Lizano" secret recipe they have.  I've only found it once or twice at stores in DFW area, but that's the only place I've seen it.

That's awesome.  I had the best civeche on my life on the beach there.  We caught some tuna and mackeral and brought it to the brothers who ran the beach bar next door.  They made ceviche from the mackeral and grilled the tuna and made salads from it.  There was enough that the brothers and their cousins came out and ate with us on the beach.
