BB has sung his praises seemingly from the day he stepped on campus.

He's recently been moved to WLB.

He's undersized for a LB but reportedly hits like a 220 pounder.

He was the only player in the scrimmage with 2 sacks.

It seems we have a linebacker who can hit, drop back in coverage and rush the passer. I know many wince at the idea of converting S to LB, but I have high hopes for this kid. I think he can give us a major spark at LB this year
Thoughts?

Sorry, but who are you talking about?  Who is TQ?

TQ Coleman. The JUCO safety we signed last year.

Notice he says your boy instead of "our coach". Very telling.

I'm not worried. If he recruits like he did here Louisville will fire him in about 5 years.

Ah, OK.

Jerico Nelson was listed as 5-10, 214 and played very well at that position. Coleman is listed at 5-10, 207. If he can play as well as Nelson did, yeah he will be a big help.

Yep. I'm crossing my fingers he can be that guy. Jerico was great for us.

TQ redshirted last year, right? He should have 2 to play 2.

No, he appeared in 11 games last year so this is it.

With moving TQ to WLB, are we solid a S?

I think we will see more of this as defenses adapt to contain HUNH Spread attacks.  I hope we are finally making moves to shut them down instead of just complaining about them.

I think Smith was hired with exactly this in mind.

Turner looked solid in the last 4 games or so last year, and Gaines was decent when he wasn't hurt. We also have Coley and McKinney back there. Both of those guys have gotten some praise. I wouldn't say we're solid at S by SEC standards, but we have 4-5 guys back there who can play the position.

Hopefully our [supposedly] vastly improved CBs can help our S out a little more this year.

jgphillips3

We are not likely to ever have Bama size linebackers and in this era of HUNH offenses, we need to go the route of Jimmy Johnson at Miami in the 80's and be fast, fast, fast in the back 7.  I say, like LSU, we should sacrifice size to get more speed back there so this move is fine with me.

LRrazorback

Speed>size, almost always in football.

It's worked out before.  Hope it does again.

In today's football Ill take a "good" sized linebacker with some speed who can match up with a TE or an H-back then bring the pain the next play.

You almost need a Safety/LB hybrid with today's offenses.  Thats how you attempt to combat the multiple receiver sets.  My only question - is he quick enough to get the slot/H-back player who runs a short cross?  Or would that be more of a CB kind of guy to cover that offensive position?

i believe this is what you will see more and more to combat the HUNH spread offenses.  Undersized linebackers with speed to drop back in coverage...only way this will be effective is if the LB has the mentality to stick his nose in and hit someone like hes 240lbs so that delayed draw can be countered as well.  Hopefully TQ fits this billing

DeltaBoy

Good move for the D ! Heard that the kid could hit.
If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.

This was something I thought of a few months ago. With our lack of depth at LB and the way TQ hits, this seemed to make a lot of sense.

With so many teams spreading it out with 3-4 WR's, having a hybrid LB like TQ can be a big asset. He would also make a good 3rd down rusher as well.

Randy Shannon is on staff.

ask yourself, "what school popularized moving safeties to linebacker?"

most offenses we'll play are pass happy.  just a natural progression of the game right now.

love the move. hope he delivers
