Dykes was a three-year letterman at Arkansas under Sutton. He joined the program as a walk-on, according to Sutton, who can't help but laugh when he tells this story about their time together:
If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.
-- Major General Patrick Cleburne
The Confederacy had no better soldiers
than the Arkansans--fearless, brave, and oftentimes courageous beyond
prudence. Dickart History of Kershaws Brigade.

I thought so too, but waited a bit longer and it came up.  Basically they were playing against Phi Slamma Jamma, and another player ripped the sole off of his shoe.  Dykes was on the bench and when Sutton called him over, he pulled his warm ups off and was ready to go, only for Sutton to ask him his shoe size, and take his shoe and give it to the other player rather than putting JD in the game.
