What we Need Moving Forward
« on: March 13, 2014, 10:24:39 pm »

Well after going to sleep hoping the game was a bad dream, I decided to come on here and discuss our team moving forward. I want to get some discussion going on about what some guys think our strengths and weaknesses are and what we need moving forward.

We have a problem that is REALLY a big deal, and the problem is we don't have guards that can take their man off the dribble and get into the lane and draw fouls.  Madden is the closets thing we have to doing that, but he's not the quickest guy and a lot of times he's out of control when he does it.  In my opinion that's honestly what's holding us back from being a great team.  You look at this last couple of games when our shots aren't falling, we're getting good shots, just not hitting them, and that happens sometimes.  In these situations good teams have a guard or guards they can go to that can get into the lane and get easy baskets.  That's what South Carolina did to us today, besides getting those offensive rebounds.  They attacked the basket, got fouled, made easy free throws.  Their PG #1, I forgot his name, had 10 points and missed all shots.  He got into the lane and got the 10 points from just attacking.  We need guards that can do that.

With that said the staff is addressing that problem, don't know if you guys heard or not yet, but just got a JUCO PG commit a few minutes ago.  Super quick PG, that attacks the rim and gets into the lane, shoots 44% from 3 point.

Here are his stats http://stats.njcaa.org/sports/mbkb/2013-14/div1/players/jabrildurhamwlgg

We finally agree.

Like Nolan said he needs a play maker.

Somebody who can get in the Lane and cause trouble

A couple of more makers on the perimeter would be great

I think we may need to change our strategy.  We need bigger stronger guards and forwards.  We need to be able to get rebounds.  Rebounds killed us today.  I also think we need to quit pressing so much.  We get way too many fouls especially in the SEC.  These refs call too many ticky tack fouls.  I may be wrong, but that is my opinion.

Wow. Didn't see that verbal coming. Hope this kid can contribute. Don't know a whole lot beyond his numbers and that he's thought to be a really good kid. 2 years left?

Beard will also help us in this regard as well.

You may have hit the nail on the head although I would disagree with the term "ticky tack fouls."  This is the way the powers that be in the NCAA want the game called so I think the coaching staff needs to sit down and consider if the system needs to be adjusted or if the way they are teaching defense needs altered.  You can't be hand checking and hacking as in the past.

We need to make some changes in our staff of assistant coaches. I'm speaking specifically of Melvin Watkins and TJ Cleveland. These guys didn't get it done this year. Getting it done, to me--for now--means making the NCAA tournament.

That's the bar. And this staff of assistant coaches failed to meet the bar.

Keep working hard to improve skill and character. We need some shooters and another pg with toughness. I also believe the fouling 85+ Feet from the rim, along with much better 3pt shooters all across college basketball makes the trapping, scrambling system less effective. I think the straight man press without trapping and gambling would utilize our depth. A system similar to Duke would be much more effective, full man press w/o gambling and giving up easy 5 on 4 and 3 on 2s and solid half court man defensively. Offensively do what we do- but get Duke type shooters instead of our current shooters. That style is fast and very entertaining and a slight adjustment of the gamble heavy system we use which leaves open shooters and gets rebounders out of position, both due to traps.

How would the assistants be held responsible and not the head coach?  Not trying to bash your opinion or anything, just interested in your reasoning on this.

And everybody knows I'm a huge MA supporter, but I was disappointed in the preparation and mental focus out guys had in these last 2 games, Alabama preparation was unacceptable, South Carolina was better, but it still didn't seem like we were all on the same page.  But, we finished right where most of us expected, right smack dab on the bubble.  I thought we'd be on the right side of it, but figured it would come down to the last couple games like it did.  All in all a "decent" season.  I'm looking forward to seeing our guys progress in the NIT, and really looking forward to seeing how these team can do next year with a true PG.

Every head coach assesses his assistant coaches after every season. I'm just suggesting that this is harder to do objectively when your top assistant is your nephew.

Maybe, to get this program back to its rightful place in the world of college basketball, Mike Anderson needs to make a hard call. Maybe he needs to put the program first, instead of his family.

Sure, a bunch of B.J. Young-types should be easy to compile. Who needs a team-oriented offense when a bunch of 'selfish' ISO-specialists are all we need to be great once again? Jump Ball certainly didn't after last season.

Funny how this observation was panned after last season. Jump Ball was glad to be rid of the one guy whose had the necessary, elite first step (& led us in assists). Give the masses long enough to soak in the obvious, it'll register eventually.

Lots of fans want the Hogs to find a freshman guard ready to create and score at a high level.

Lots of fans blast BJ Young at every chance.

Interesting.

That will be bad for the Razorbacks.

Wise. As of February 1st, his offer list consisted of Texas St., Central Arkansas, Abilene Christian, & Tennessee Tech. This is the time of year where mid & high major rosters are filled with wildcards.

In fairness, lots of major programs pass on JUCOs until last resort. Every season plenty of JUCOs make major contributions. He could come in and be a big spark.

I'd prefer that scholarship had been spent last offseason so we would have an extra experienced returner instead of needing multiple first year players to undergo trial by fire.

2014
Sr
Madden
Harris

Jr
Qualls
Williams
Bell
Wagner
Miles
Durham

So
Portis
Kingsley

Fr
Beard
Babb
Thompson

Looks like we are done adding for next season unless "room is made".  Isn't 2015 supposed to be a loaded high school class as far as prospects we have a chance at getting?  Only 2 scholarships to give?

Getting a JC guard now is a reach.  It should be concerning that our staff sees the need to do this.  But they should be concerned when you look at the returning and incoming guards.

That's what I was saying. This time of year it's a scramble to secure JUCO kids to fill rosters during the spring signing period. In a month's time his offer list improved to all power conference schools. Who knows what they can provide? Wildcard.

That's what I was saying. This time of year it's a scramble to secure JUCO kids to fill rosters during the spring signing period. In a month's time his offer list improved to all power conference schools. Who knows what they can provide? Wildcard.

So we getting a guy from Seminole State in Texas?
Why did this guy not get to a low major D1 school out of HS?
Is this the guy that gets Wagner to transfer to the Southland Conference?

TJ isn't going anywhere with Mike being his uncle but I really think we need a major upgrade there. What I'm about to say is not based on facts, let me say that first. But to me it just seems like he's dead weight on the coaching staff. Maybe there is another role he could flourish at without being on the bench. From a recruiting standpoint and I could be wrong but he seems like dead weight there as well because I can hardly remember any recruits comments about TJ being the reason they're interested in us, just don't recall getting any recruits where it appeared TJ was the lead recruiter. If Mike wants that spot on the staff to be a young "up and coming" former hog, I would much much rather have Marcus Monk take TJ's spot.

I don't know much about Watkins and Zimmerman, but it seems as if we've been beaten out for prospects that choose other places that don't have the basketball tradition and history, and don't offer a place to play anywhere near as big time as BWA. We lost Dickerson to Iowa, and even Jalen Hudson to Virginia Tech. We need somebody on this staff that can flat out recruit. I thought that was Watkins' biggest asset. I may be wrong but it just seems like there's a lot left to be desired with these assistants we have. I think we need someone that is really good at developing big men. Somebody like even Joe Kleine or a Corliss type. Someone that played inside and can really maximize the talent of Portis and Kingsley, and be the guy that's constantly preaching box out!

I doubt any changes are made but just my opinion from then very little I know, it seems like we could do a lot better than the assistants we have right now

Here is a full game of Durham if some of you actually want to see him play before making comments about him.

Durham is a bigger get than Dickerson would have been.  Better player in a better league.

I personally think we need some assistant coaches that know how to coach a half court offense and recruit.

i think one of the things that should help our team
next year is our 2 freshmen big men will have been
here for a year. i hope to see improvement from
all returning players. add the new players to offset
the loses of the seniors.
we can hopefully improve by say 4 to 6 games
over this year.(yeah i know but a guy can dream)

We need to be rooting for Williams and Wagner to stay and be big time contributors.

The backcourt is extremely thin and Wagner as a junior could take a step forward and be a contributor. His improvement is vital for next season. Jacorrey Williams has a ton of potential, he could be a big time contributor if he develops some more.

All you people whined and complained about turnover in the Pelphrey years. Players have been leaving this programs early every offseason under Anderson (just like every program in the nation, imagine that). We need to start having players stay in the program and develop, especially ones he himself signed.
