WalMart Razorback merchandise
« on: February 23, 2014, 11:46:37 pm »

Could some of you who handle merchandise (especially Atlhogfan1 and rzrbkfan2008) comment on this?

When I go to WalMart and look at their caps (especially) and shirts, they are an ugly ass shade of maroon - please tell me they are the ones who have it wrong and any "change" by the athletic department will fix this with them bringing us back to whatever brighter red we are supposed to be

Or, is Walmart driving the run to maroon and the athletic department caving to their wishes?

Other thoughts?

Thanks

Don't see how the change by the AD will fix it, when they're they're talking about making the color more maroon.  Personally, I think the color change began in the late eighties, when we suddenly began looking like A&M.  Since then, our color has been all over the place, but has rarely been what it was and should be.

I have experienced in licensed Arkansas stuff I can tell you the WM vendors are making the cheapest hats that most likely aren't avl in Cardinal so they embroider them on a cheap reddish/maroon color. I don't know how some of that Hog stuff gets into WM. a lot of it is pretty cheesy.

Go to http://www.arkansasrazorbacks.com
Click on "shop" & browse through the apparel.
You'll see various shades of red.

There is a company called the Collegiate Licencing Committee or CLC that handles and approves or rejects designs and colors for all of Arkansas licensed merchandise.  This same company represents about 75% of the teams in the NCAA.
I think our Athletic dept needs to do a better job outlining what is acceptable and not for this 3rd party company.

I don't care for all the mass produced cookie cutter Razorback Gear.   To me, it cheapens the quality and true color of The University Of Arkansas.

People need to get on the same page and fix it.....IMO.

Arkansas fans, such as myself, have no desire to be confused with A&M, Alabama or whoever else that has that ridiculous maroon color.

All the merchandise (razorback) sold in wal mart (and other stores) is tested and must meet the standards that the U of A and the CLC allows.  Also I think I read the other day that the "new" official color of the U of A is now PMS 202?

If you look at the razorback merchandise in that link, the shades of red on each item are all different. The polo shirt there actually looks like the correct shade of red to me.

Yeah, I did that and you're right. I actually think Pantone 199 is closer to razorback red than 200 is.

Anyone else remember how many versions of Razorback red there were in the 1980's?  Remember the God-awful caps that had the white foam fronts and the mesh back (like the big dude wore in "The Abyss")?  They were as bright red as Georgia Bulldog red.  Then you turned on the tv and our jerseys were maroon.  The basketball uniforms varied from red to maroon to damn-near purple.  How hard is it to get multi-billion dollar apparel companies to make a cardinal and white piece of fabric and stick to it?

As has been mentioned, just look in your closet, how many shades of red? I got a fleece pullover last spring while up for a baseball games, it's a whole lot closer to GA red than Razorback red.

Yeah, remember the unis the Bball hogs wore when Mayberry and day and miller were playing? The road ones? The red ones? They were dark maroon. Nothing razorback red about them.

BINGO!    WM good for consumable products only like toilet paper, cleaning supplies, etc.  And then only from Walmart.com and dropped on my front porch.  Don't want to walk in the place and sure as heck wouldn't be buying clothes there.

Just my 2cents worth, probably worth less than that.

The more they make, maybe the more they advertise with us, can't hurt. There are two in Jonesboro, one I shop at, one I don't.

199 is too bright. The old traditional jerseys were deep red - not all the way to maroon, but not Georgia red either. The 199 looks more like Georgia to me.  We should be one shade redder than aTm.  We are supposed to be Cardinal, but of course even cardinals have different shades of red on them. We should be deep red, but not maroon.

A few aesthetic comments that most will not care about, but here goes anyway:

1. what you see in real (sun)light vs artificial light can be quite different. A peach on the computer screen becomes an orange in some artificial light or a pink in other light.
2. dye lots are not universal. There will be some subtle changes between products in one dye lot and those in another. The cheaper products will have less quality control and thus will be more prone to variation. That means: you make the color by mixing it according to a recipe. However, the mixture is not always precise. Certain variation is always allowed; some will not worry if it is outside of a certain range (others will).

To add to Oklahawg:

For those splitting hairs on shades of color, let me ask an honest question... Is your monitor properly calibrated, ie through calibration software and a probe? What is your viewing gamma? 1.8 or 2.2?  Color temp? Etc.

I say this because you need this if you want to to be able to accurately look at Pantone Colors and to accurately discuss shades of a very specific color. I come from a Film/TV background but I am sure there a ton of print and web guys that further explain this importance.

Just throwing that out there guys...  You are most likely in the Ball Park :razorback:

Agree, but the Collegiate Licensing Company sold us out years ago and even listed our colors as Black and Red - they are charged with protecting our brand, logo and colors.....pretty simple job, but not only did they not protect the right colors, they actually PROMOTED the wrong ones - I have no use for them what-so-ever

Yeah, if we go with 202 we should change our colors to "Crimson and white". So if we are claiming that our "cardinal should be a darker red", then what color does (or is it do?) the St Louis Cardinals claim? because that is Cardinal to me and it ain't maroon!

Look at the pictures below... the PMS 200 color is not even close to what our helmets look like.  If they were changing our helmets to this color, which is supposedly the official color now, I would be pretty pissed.

I love all these hogs fans trash talking Walmart without the slightest thought of what a sh*t hole our campus would be without them.  Idiots.

Doesn't mean we have to worship at their feet and love them. They treat customers like crap.

Walmart doesn't treat their customers like crap.  If EVERYONE felt the same way you did, they clearly wouldn't be the largest retailer in the world.  I have seen walmart do things for the community and customers that was not expected or owed of them that anyone would consider to be top notch customer service and support for communities.

In your opinion, Do you think that Sam Walton, being a Arkansas Fan, would have wanted his Company selling a product that wasn't suitable to Arkansas fans or at the very least didn't accurately represent the University with the proper colors etc?

It's hard to know for certain but I'd like to think positively.
