The Vandy class is shrinking
« on: January 17, 2014, 08:54:52 am »

Since Franklin left Vanderbilt to become Penn State's head coach last Saturday, the Commodores have lost seven commitments and are down to just 12 verbals in their 2014 class. On Jan. 9, Vandy ranked 29th in the ESPN RecruitingNation class rankings. As of Thursday, they are out of the rankings altogether.

"Losing seven commits, including ESPN 300 quarterback Kyle Carta-Samuels, right before signing day is devastating for Vanderbilt," ESPN recruiting analyst Derek Tyson said. "A lot of times, recruits will take the wait-and-see approach when a coach leaves, but it was obvious how important Franklin was to these recruits. Three former Vandy commits, Brendan Brosnan, Lloyd Tubman and Chance Sorrell, switched their commitments to Penn State almost immediately after Franklin left for Happy Valley."

Decommitments are natural after a coaching change, but the ones who are leaving to join Franklin have Vandy's fans upset with their former coach. They view it as disrespectful and unethical, considering all the good Franklin did for the Commodores. You'll see the term "scorched earth" thrown around when it comes to the crippling effect Franklin's departure has had on this recruiting class.

The problem is that a lot of these recruits were and are invested in Franklin more than Vandy.

The destruction of Vanderbilt’s football recruiting class was supposed to have stopped once its 10 commitments made their official visits last weekend to Nashville.

Then Tuesday arrived and two more abandoned ship, bringing the total to 10 who have changed their commitments since James Franklin left for Penn State.

There was a dose of good news when 6-foot-7, 320-pound offensive lineman Bailey Granier committed to Vanderbilt on Tuesday for the second time, according to 247sports.com. He decommitted after Franklin left.

Cornerback Kyle Gibson of Seffner, Fla., the top remaining commitment according to recruiting services, flipped to Central Florida. Offensive lineman Jesse Burkett of Jacksonville, Fla., changed his pledge to Stanford — the school from which new Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason came.

POS Franklin taking most to P St. All is fair in football and recruiting I guess. Good debate is recruits commit to the coach not the school? So said Franklin to our Nashville media.

Great .@jefflockridge analysis on personal reasons why post-Franklin #Vanderbilt lost football recruits. http://tnne.ws/1aL6L1x

Quote
Thirteen of the 20 football prospects who were committed to Vanderbilt before the coaching change are no longer on board, and 12 have committed to other schools. From that dozen, eight made their choices after Derek Mason was hired to replace James Franklin.

The numbers game has Vanderbilt needing to make a lot of headway during this final weekend of official visits to salvage a recruiting class that is currently just nine strong.

“We want to find about 20 guys, but it’s so late in the game right now, we might have a smaller class,” said South Lafourche (Galliano, La.) offensive lineman Bailey Granier, the only recruit to recommit to Vanderbilt from those who decommitted when Franklin left for Penn State...

The Vandy class was shrinking and expanding; now flexible

Coach Derek Mason likes number of #Vandy signees who can play multiple positions. http://tnne.ws/1eCLndU

He may need that.

Quote
Nearly half of his 22 football signees will wind up getting a good look at multiple positions.

There are quarterbacks and cornerbacks who could play receiver, potentially interchangeable outside linebackers and defensive ends, and linemen who could land on either side of the ball.

Ronald Monroe is the poster child for the flexibility Mason will have when freshmen arrive this summer. Monroe, listed as an athlete on Vanderbilt’s signing-day release, was a standout quarterback at Bush, Texas, and was recruited for that position.

But with Mason able to get quarterbacks Wade Freebeck and Shawn Stankavage to flip from Pittsburgh and East Carolina, respectively, he may be able to utilize Monroe as a receiver or somewhere else.

“It doesn’t matter where he plays,” Mason said.

Penn State coach James Franklin grilled by radio host Paul Finebaum on flipping recruits | http://PennLive.com  http://ow.ly/tpxDj

(audio available for click at link)

Quote
The issue of Franklin flipping players that he recruited at Vanderbilt and, in turn, bringing those players to Penn State has been debated at length, but very few people, if any, have debated Franklin directly.

But national radio host Paul Finebaum, a regular contributor to ESPN college football, pressed Franklin on the issue this week just after National Signing Day. The interview began cordially, but turned a little testy when Finebaum didn't accept Franklin's answers to his questions.

At one point, Franklin and Finebaum were talking over and past one another until Finebaum cut off the Penn State coach to challenge him on whether or not it's right that he got several of his Vandy recruits to become members of the Nittany Lions.

Now that the class is signed, just how much did James Franklin's departure hurt #Vandy recruiting? http://tnne.ws/1efolVT

Quote
The Commodores took a hit once the ink dried on the national letters of intent. They dropped from a class that was ranked in the top 25 in the nation under Franklin to between Nos. 46 and 50 — and last in the SEC — under Mason.

All 20 of Vanderbilt’s commitments on Jan. 10 — the day before Franklin was named Penn State’s coach —had offers from other programs that were in the six BCS automatic-qualifier conferences under the 2013 alignment. Eighteen of Vanderbilt’s 22 signees on Wednesday had other BCS-level offers.

Eleven of the original 20 commitments received offers from SEC teams other than Vanderbilt. Of the 22 signees, five were offered by other SEC teams, and three of those — Bailey Granier, Dallas Rivers and Emmanuel Smith — committed to the former Vanderbilt staff and then re-upped with Mason.

Mason, who was previously Stanford’s defensive coordinator, landed four signees from California, most notably Sacramento defensive end Nifae Lealao. None of the four was listed with SEC offers, but Lealao and Ladarius Wiley had Pac-12 and Big Ten offers.

Noted that the biggest losses were in the trenches.

Vandy may schedule Penn State in football
« Reply #22 on: March 31, 2014, 11:04:30 am »

Vanderbilt athletics director David Williams is open to a matchup between the Commodores and James Franklin’s Penn State football team but only under a specific set of circumstances.

Q:Derek Mason has said he would play Penn State any time, anywhere. James Franklin said he would be open to talking about it. Would you try to make that game happen?

David Williams: I think that’s it’s something we would work to do, but I’m not going to incur costs to do it. I’m not sure what everybody has in mind. We’re trying to figure out what’s going to happen with the SEC and do we go to nine (conference) games...
