South Carolina: According to The Big Spur, Steve Spurrier's new contract includes a position within the university, once he retires. The State reports his salary is raised to $4 million and contract extended through 2018.

Steve Spurrier's staff has received raises and extensions, according to The State. Eight assistants had their contracts extended through 2015, and defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward's contract was extended through 2016. Ward received a $100,000 raise to $750,000, co-offensive coordinator / offensive line coach Shawn Elliott received a $105,000 raise to $430,000, quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus received a $100,000 raise to $275,000

Since Gary Pinkel arrived at Missouri in 2001, the Tigers have had to replace only four assistants from their nine on-field posts: offensive coordinator Dave Christensen and defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus after the 2008 season, safeties coach Barry Odom after the 2011 season and offensive coordinator David Yost after the 2012 season.

How abnormal is that among Missouri's new SEC brethren? Very.

The average SEC team has had used an average of 44 different coaches in its 10 on-field posts -- head coach, plus nine assistants -- since 2001.

The number assistant changes, head coaching changes, and frequently moving coaches like John Thompson are listed.

"He's pretty fired up."

"Lane has taken a few knocks here and there along the way," his dad said. "I know him pretty well. A lot better than most people. I know down deep he's a good person, contrary to what people might think. Coach Saban wouldn't have hired him if he didn't feel the same way."

Asked about his son's ability to develop quarterbacks, which will be paramount with Alabama searching for AJ McCarron's successor, Monte Kiffin said his son "has a really good feel for offense, the running game and the passing game."

Succeed as Saban's offensive coordinator, and there's a very good chance Lane Kiffin will get another shot to be a head coach. Monte Kiffin said that's his son's goal, "but right now he's not complaining."

"To be able to go with Coach Saban, I think it's a good opportunity for Lane. When Coach Saban hires you, it helps your credibility."

Clint Hurtt, a somewhat controversial name in the college coaching ranks over the past couple of years, is leaving Louisville to be an assistant coach with the NFL's Chicago Bears. Louisville confirmed the news with a press release Thursday evening.

"I want to thank Tom Jurich, Bobby Petrino, and President James Ramsey for their support during this process," Hurtt said in a statement released by Louisville. "I truly looked forward to working with Bobby Petrino at Louisville, but I feel this is a great opportunity. Tom is always going to be important to me and my family. He stuck with me through the toughest of times, and I will always appreciate his support for me and my family."

Commodores announced the additions of Karl Dorrell (offensive coordinator and quarterbacks), David Kotulski (defensive coordinator and inside linebackers), Gerry Gdowski (wide receivers), Keven Lightner (offensive line), Vavae Tate (defensive line) and Kenwick Thompson (outside linebackers).

Charles Bankins was retained from James Franklin's staff and will coach running backs and special teams.

West Virginia defensive coordinator Keith Patterson is leaving for Arizona State.

Patterson's departure means Holgorsen will enter 2014 with his fourth defensive coordinator in four seasons at WVU.

Sun Devils head coach Todd Graham was expected to announce the hiring of Patterson, who worked as Graham's coordinator at Pitt during the 2011 [season], when the Panthers' defense ranked 35th nationally.

New Jersey Star-Ledger: Robb Smith, once the top candidate for Rutgers' defensive coordinator job, has officially landed at Arkansas as defensive coordinator/secondary coach.

Rutgers promoted special teams coordinator Joe Rossi to defensive coordinator last week after a nearly eight-week search to replace Dave Cohen, who was fired after one season. Smith, who was Rutgers' defensive coordinator in 2012, was considered the top candidate to return in mid-January after one season as linebackers coach on Greg Schiano's staff with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

But things never materialized with Smith and Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood moved on to Rossi. Smith had been linked to the opening at Arkansas throughout the process with Rutgers.

Smith and Arkansas coach Bret Bielema worked together at Iowa from 1999-2001, when Smith was a graduate assistant and Bielema was the linebackers coach.

Smith's stock was boosted by his one season as Rutgers' defensive coordinator. He led a unit with seven future NFL players to the No. 4 ranking nationally in points allowed.

NOLA.com is reporting that current UK assistant coach Bradley Dale Peveto is one of three finalists to be the new special teams coach at LSU replacing Thomas McGaughey, who left to become special teams coach with the New York Jets.

Mike Haywood, another former LSU assistant who was head coach at Miami (Ohio), and Manny Diaz, former defensive coordinator at Mississippi State and Texas, are reportedly the other two candidates for the job.

After being named head coach at Pittsburgh in 2012, Haywood was fired after being arrested on domestic battery charges. Those charges were dismissed when he completed a diversion program. Diaz is currently defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech.

Quickly promoted and then just as quickly twice demoted at Utah, Brian Johnson will once again be viewed as a smart, up-and-coming coach next year at Mississippi State. In fact, he would still be a smart, up-and-coming offensive coordinator at Utah if his quarterback these past two seasons had been Dak Prescott, the dual-threat talent he's inheriting with the Bulldogs.

Heck, reporters would probably be wondering when he'd become the nation's youngest head coach after previously being its youngest offensive coordinator.

Miller notes that the winningest QB in Utah history went from Utah's OC at age 25, to co-OC at age 26, to QB coach at age 27. Also notes that players may you look good or bad.

Bielema kept DC search close to the vest.

"I didn't talk to a lot of people about this process," Bielema said. "I felt it was a big hire for me as a head coach. I wanted to keep the circle tight. I didn't let a lot of people in. I interviewed a lot of people that didn't want their name out there. I think it's very entertaining for me to watch speculation and thoughts and processes go through, because as head coaches, if you want information out there, you let it out there. Guys that want to leak names or want to say certain things, you do it.

"As a head coach, I've just never been into that. I kept everything very, very tight. I talked to several people that will never have their names released, because I told them that.

"I don't know if I have an exact number. I know I interviewed four people, besides Robb, that I considered legitimate candidates," Bielema said. "People I felt that, if this didn't go forward, that was something I was going to be able to do. As was the case with the D-line position, I was overwhelmed by the people that reached out. In this one, I had to be guarded against people who knew what my last coordinator made, so you want to make sure someone wasn't trying to get a pay bump..."

Ekeler, who will be co-special teams coordinator, told Mark Richt during his interview: "Coach, you set a record for being in punt safe."

Mike Ekeler just made a Chris Farley/Matt Foley reference, when asked about living in a van while at Indiana. It's hard to dislike this guy.

Former Alabama offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier receives sizable pay bump at Michigan http://ow.ly/tZYve

Nussmeier received a $150,000 pay raise when he left for the same position at Michigan.

According to MLive.com, Nussmeier will make at least $830,000 in his first season with the Wolverines. His salary will increase to $860,000 in his second year and $880,000 in 2016. The three-year deal is worth $2.57 million.

If he stays at Michigan for three seasons, Nussmeier will receive a one-time bonus of $200,000.
