College football's Season of Cutting Your Losses begins with Lane Kiffin's firing

After waiting more than three years for Lane Kiffin to restore USC's football program to national prominence, Pat Haden could wait no longer.

The Trojans' athletic director was in such a rush to rid himself of Kiffin that he met the coach at the school's private airport terminal in Los Angeles early Sunday morning to drop the hammer as Kiffin stepped off the team plane from Tempe. He did reportedly give Kiffin 45 minutes to plead his case, but to no avail.

Tying the record for most points allowed in school history will get a guy in a hammering mood.

What's the best time to fire a coach? If you wait until the end of the season when the decision's already made, you're just letting him twist in the wind and recruits are typically smart enough to smell a lame duck. If you cut him loose during the season, you're essentially throwing what's left of it away and any benefit to recruiting is probably negligible.

While a lame-duck coach is no boon to recruiting, an empty office is no better. In most cases, there's usually some sense the job might be salvageable, some ammunition with which a coach can go on the recruiting trail and sell his program with a straight face.

Here's a case, however where delay made no sense. This season, like the last, was clearly going nowhere at USC, which is 3-2 overall but already in an 0-2 hole in the Pac-12. And finding someone who thinks Kiffin had any chance to survive is like finding an igloo on Venice Beach.

Kiffin was the first to fall and he wasn't the last. Connecticut's Paul Pasqualoni was axed a day later and others are sure to follow - many likely before Thanksgiving. Call it the Season of Cutting Your Losses.

With Texas Athletic Director DeLoss Dodds announcing he'll retire next August, Mack Brown's days are numbered in Austin - and probably were anyway.

What does all this mean for the SEC? It means many of its coaches are about to become really popular.

Minnesota coach Jerry Kill suffered a seizure Saturday morning and will not coach in today's game against Michigan.

Kill, who has epilepsy and has a history of seizures, has now had five seizure-related episodes since taking over the Gophers' program in 2011. He had to leave the New Mexico State game last month after suffering a seizure just after halftime.

DC Tracy Claeys will coach the team.

With Grambling State in a self-proclaimed dire financial "emergency," the university continues to fork up cashwithin its chaotic athletic department.

The latest comes on the heels of Friday's decision to forfeit Saturday's game at Jackson State after just 22 players showed up for the bus ride to Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Grambling not only received another loss, dropping the Tigers to 0-8 this season, but athletic director Aaron James told The News-Star late Friday the university would also be hit with a $20,000 fine, per SWAC bylaws.

While there's no official word on how Grambling will pay, it could possibly come from the reallocation of funds within the athletic budget, which is currently paying Doug Williams' buyout of nearly $250,000.

There also could be potential fines handed down to Grambling due to the financial loss Jackson State incurred from its homecoming game, or lack thereof.

Louisville: According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, an NFL advisory panel helping minority candidates is already advocating for Charlie Strong. Schefter also says Strong and Teddy Bridgewater could be "reuniting in an NFL city near you."

Louisville: Charlie Strong addressed a report his name is being pushed in NFL circles, saying Monday, "I've never, ever thought about the NFL."

Louisville: Clint Hurtt has received a 2-year show-cause order from October 22, 2013 to October 21, 2015 for his role in the Miami debacle. 


Louisville: Louisville AD Tom Jurich says Clint Hurtt will indeed remain a part of the Louisville staff, but he will be monitored closely. Hurtt will not be allowed to recruit the remainder of this fall or during the spring of 2014.

Urban: Fickel "better not have interviewed with FAU" during the season

"He did not interview," Meyer said after practice Wednesday evening, according to The Toledo Blade. "He better not have."

Meyer said he had not been contacted by Florida Atlantic about interviewing any of his assistants and says there is no interviewing for assistants during the regular season. It was reported on Tuesday Fickell had been interviewed by FAU athletic director Pat Chun.

Virginia AD again backs Mike London as Hoos coach

For the second time in a little over a month, Mike London's boss has vehemently and publicly supported the embattled head coach.

Whether that's good news or the dreaded vote of confidence remains to be seen.

Acknowledging what he calls a "very vocal" group of detractors looking for a change, UVa. athletic director Craig Littlepage nonetheless reiterated to the Roanoke Daily Press that London has his full and unequivocal backing.  Littlepage gave no indication that he's even thought about removing London let alone seriously considered doing what a significant segment of the fan base would like.

Littlepage said they are going to fix football. That's it.

Missouri coach Gary Pinkel on Thursday addressed the open position at Washington, where he was an assistant coach for 12 years under his mentor, the late Don James.

"I'll be quite frank," Pinkel said on ESPN's "Mike & Mike," "I'm staying at the University of Missouri."

"I, with the administration's help, can continue to build a national program and (can continue) the quest for national championships.

"I'm a Missouri Tiger and I'm going to stay a Missouri Tiger."

Missouri athletic director Mike Alden said in a statement Thursday that he would meet with Pinkel after the season to "focus on ways to build on" the success of the football program...

Official: Chris Petersen was named coach at Washington on Friday.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed in Washington's news release announcing the hire, but according to ESPN sources the contract will make Petersen one of the highest-paid coaches in the Pac-12.

"Coach Petersen's success and record are extraordinary, but even more impressive is the man himself," Washington athletic director Scott Woodward said in the statement. "His integrity, work ethic and character make him an outstanding fit and leader of our student-athletes at UW. We are thrilled and proud to call Coach Petersen a Husky."

Petersen met on Thursday with Woodward and senior associate AD Jennifer Cohen in Boise and signed an agreement on terms (sic), ESPN sources said.
