He makes some good points on how trading King Felix now could give the Mariners the young hitters they need to compete in the AL.

Well written article.

Can't say one way or another would be better.

Flying Razorback

They definitely should.  The Royals could have done better with Zack Greinke in his prime too.  A franchise like Seattle gets a single jewel piece and it's very very hard to let go of.  It's all you can really hang your hat on.  But really, what has he done for the franchise in the past 5 years?  He's thrown great, incredible at times, but it hasn't gotten them out of the cellar.

Maybe it's time to sell high and do the best you can with the influx of youth.  Cut your payroll commitment to him early and use that money to build a total team.

I think they shouldn't.   As the fan of a mid-market franchise that shipped off the staff ace,  I know just what losing The Guy means to even the most promising and deep of young rotations.

No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

Yeah but is it worth it to keep that one stud? Or would they be better off bringing in more guys to be a more complete team. It's always great to have a stud pitcher. Only problem is they are only playing every 5th game so they can't get you there alone.

In short, yes.     Being a more complete team is a good goal, but the goal is to win championships-- and you don't win that with nice well rounded teams lacking an ace.

YMMV, but an Ace is the rarest commodity in baseball.

I agree. Thing is, you don't win championships with just an ace either. It's great when you have a guy you can count on every 5th day, but if you aren't getting anything the other 4 days then it really doesn't matter. That's the problem a lot of mid-market franchises run into. A lot times they are either faced with the choice of one or the other. It's a lot to overcome.

Of course there are the times you see the mid-market teams make a strong push, but it is usually quickly followed by an unloading process after the season. Seems that a lot of those teams only option is to fill up with young talent, draft well, wait until they find their stride and hope for a strong push before they have to unload them.

IMO they should keep him. Safeco is a pitcher's ballpark and they should keep one of the best out there.

Gotta look past on the field production as well.  Felix sells tickets and is here, now.  No guarantee on prospects.  Tough to gamble such a rare piece.

Keep the ace in a pitcher's park. Spend your money in the off-season doing a better job of finding offensive pieces.

They missed the mark badly dealing Lee for Smoak. Ackley is legit at 2B. They've had bad luck with Gutierrez in the OF (always hurt).

They just have some funky front office work going on. Exhibit "A": they bring up a solid prospect in Trayvon Robinson (OF). Then, he sits the bench for 3 of the first 4 games he is up. Why bring up a young pup if you are in last place if you aren't going to play him?
I am a Hog fan. I was long before my name was etched, twice, on the sidewalks on the Hill. I will be long after Sam Pittman and Eric Mussleman are coaches, and Hunter Yuracheck is AD. I am a Hog fan when we win, when we lose and when we don't play. I love hearing the UA band play the National Anthem on game day, but I sing along to the Alma Mater.
