College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock (@BHancockCFP): The selection committee won't be interested in whether a team played 8 or 9 conference games. It's about the whole body of work.

Hancock: It's all about the level of competition. If one 11-1 team played better competition, they'll look different than another 11-1 team.

Hancock: The criteria the committee will look at are W-L record, head-to-head record, record vs. common opponents, SOS & conf. champs.

How it works: Each member will submit an individual top 10, which we'll compile to get an average score and then publish our official FOX Four rankings from highest to lowest (average score in parentheses). Though this ranking puts special emphasis on the first four teams – our current playoff picks after the most recent week of the season – we'll list a top 10 so you can see how the committee has prioritized the second batch of teams that could impact the playoff discussion.

If the College Football Playoff utilized the BCS computers' rankings, three teams from the SEC would be included as of today:

1. Auburn
2. Florida State
3. Ole Miss
4. Mississippi State

Auburn faces Mississippi State Saturday in Starkville (2:30 p.m., CBS).

The College Football Playoff committee will begin releasing its own set of rankings, which it will use to determine the four-team seeding for the playoff, starting Oct. 28.

Bama is six and A&M is eight.

On Thursday, myself and 16 other college football writers from around the country played the roles of College Football Playoff committee members in a mock selection exercise involving the 2008 season. We sat in the same room of the Gaylord Texan resort around the same desk using the same voting software and statistical database they will...

Following five hours of extensive and often animated debate (ESPN's Holly Rowe, for one, emerged as a powerful voice in the room) and a meticulous balloting process (it took 20 rounds of votes to reach 25 teams), we felt quite confident in our results, highlighted by the following Top 4:

1) Florida

2) Oklahoma

3) Texas

4) USC

Penn State, 11-1 Big Ten champion, was the unfortunate No. 5 team.

With our work done, we then reverted to reporter mode and proceeded to grill our committee chairman, Sports Illustrated's Andy Staples, just as we will Arkansas AD Jeff Long on Dec. 7. How could he possibly justify the committee -- us -- choosing USC, which suffered a 27-21 loss to 8-4 Oregon State, at the expense of a Penn State team that beat those same Beavers 45-14? And whose only loss was by one point on a last-second field goal at 8-4 Iowa?
