Tracking the success of Nick Saban's first 11 JUCO signees after signing four in 2014

In his first seven signing classes, 11 players were added from JUCOs with eight seeing action in an Alabama uniform.

Three of those players — Michael Ricks, Quinton Dial and Deion Belue — signed with Alabama out of high school but had to attend junior college first.

Saban likes to recruit JUCO players for positions of immediate need for their maturity.

"The most important thing about recruiting junior-college guys to me is they want to go some place where they can play," Saban said in 2012. "If you have a need for them at that particular position, it's good for them, it's good for you, and I think it can really sort of complement the players that you have on your team."

Have recruiting rankings improved that much over time? The experts say yes. I spoke with national recruiting directors Tom Luginbill of ESPN, Scott Kennedy of Scout.com, and JC Shurburtt of 247 Sports.

One of the most noticeable differences between the rankings from the early beginnings of the industry (around the turn of the century) and now is the smaller percentage of elite players who fall through the cracks.

"I think we do a better job these days of finding the in-state talents who stay in the state, from-a-smaller-place kind of guy. Like a Darren McFadden, who picked Arkansas and is from Arkansas, and no one else really paid close attention to him [Scout ranked McFadden the No. 9 running back nationally]," Kennedy said. "Twenty years ago, maybe no one paid attention to him at all. Now, everybody is going to see a guy like Darren McFadden, even in a small state like Arkansas, even though he stayed home and didn't do the publicity tour like many of these guys have."

Chris Low: Below [link above] is a stab at the 10 best players in the SEC next season who were ranked as three-star prospects or lower by ESPN coming out of high school. We've listed them alphabetically.

Trey Flowers, DE, Arkansas, Sr.: Flowers had 13.5 tackles for loss last season, which leads all returning players in the SEC. He was ranked as the No. 108 defensive end nationally as a high school senior in Huntsville, Ala. He was originally committed to Georgia Tech but took a visit to Arkansas on the final weekend and signed with the Hogs.

Dak, QB, Mississippi State, Jr.: One of the top returning quarterbacks in the league along with Marshall, Prescott is a threat both as a runner and a passer and is poised for a huge season in 2014. A Haughton, La., product, Prescott was ranked as the No. 41 quarterback nationally coming out of high school. LSU offered after he had a big senior season, but Prescott stuck to his guns and enrolled early at Mississippi State that January.

The state of South Carolina has the highest per capita rate of producing NFL Draft picks during the last three years (2011-13) according to Jamie Newberg of Scout.com. The Palmetto State, which fittingly produced the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney (Rock Hill, S.C./South Pointe and South Carolina), produced picks at a rate of 5.66/million. South Carolina has a population of 4.77 million. Louisiana was No. 2 with 5.38/million, followed by Florida 5.33/million, Georgia 5.14/million and Texas 5.09/million.
