« on: October 27, 2011, 08:29:18 am »

if you pay close attention.. lol (i can't believe im even saying this. b/c i know im stirring the pot and its funny)

for all you wolf howl lovers.. listen when TW is calling the hogs at tent city. the chick next to him does the famous wolf howl and TW says "i like that"...

just saying. im sure TW just garnered a bunch of heisman votes from the old school crew...

for the record, im not for it or against it. i dont give a rip either way. im not worried about other hog fans around me and playing the traditions card on the regular. either way... just showing you it comes from the top and trickles downward.

True, but the hog call also doesn't sound like any noise a pig makes, so this argument isn't that appropriate.

Note- I don't really care either way, but the argument between old and young people on this issue amuses me.

The Hog call isn't supposed to sound like a pig.  It's how you call pigs to the trough.  We're calling the Hogs, not wolf/pig hybrids...

The hog call are what pig farmers would yell to move their pigs to the next pen. Its not like a duck call... lol.. Its not meant to sound like a hog for hunting. Its a noise to move domestic pigs or to flush wild pigs out of brush so you can shoot them.

I think we arkansans are losing our roots if people dont know what a pig call is today.

I don't think it's so much "old vs young" as it is tradition vs trend. Myself included, i would imagine there's several other hogvillians in their 20's still that do not like the howling.
I guess it's just a question of taste.

Goodness gracious.  The Hog Call has nothing to do with a noise a pig makes.  Traditionally it is the feeding call a farmer makes when he feeds them. :razorback:

I'm in my 20's (barely) and I don't like the "wolf-howl" prior to the "Woooo."  It just goes against everything I was taught from birth.  My earliest memories are of Razorback games with my grandpa (God rest his soul) and my father calling the Hogs in the only manner that I have ever known or accepted.

Its a noise to move domestic pigs or to flush wild pigs out of brush so you can shoot them.

So our long-standing tradition is actually a call to bring our team out in to the open to shoot them?? This doesn't sound that awesome anymore....

A hog call isn't supposed to sound like a pig.  More than that, it's not "universal"; it's a "proprietary" call that a pig farmer will condition his pigs to respond to.  The call my grandfather conditioned his pigs to respond to sounded nothing like "woo pig sooey".

For those who claim that the "correct" way is the "way they grew up with", the modern Hog Call probably sounds nothing like the "original" that was introduced by some farmers at a Razorback game a hundred years ago.

Not Oww-Woooo pig soooie. I'll freaking die if I ever see that written on a t-shirt or banner. Tyler still has some things to learn.

I love our players, but letting a bunch of 17-22 year olds WHO WILL BE GONE FROM THE PROGRAM WITHIN FOUR YEARS change the school colors, uniforms, logos, and other traditions is not well thought out to say the least...and downright stupid to say the most.

If the coaches and administration had allowed "the players" and "the current students" to make decisions when I was in school we'd have come running out of the dressing room wearing tie-dyed jerseys and bell bottoms...to disco music blasting over the PA.

How freaking awful would that look and sound to all you "times change and new traditions should be embraced" proponents?

Players come and go.  The school and the program remain.

I still wan't an invite to a MD xmas party.....don't have one yet.

FWIW I'm not so sure the howl is such a new thing... I may be wrong, somebody help me with this... But I am almost positive my dad has a record from the 70's that has all the Razorback band classics on it. At one point on that old record there is a hog call and I am almost positive there is a aawwoooo!?

Anyone else have any idea about this?

It's called a Hog Call. That means you are calling the Hogs; not the sound of a Hog, pig, gilt, wean or feeder pig. Hence, when calling the Hogs the Hogs come to you and not the noise they make.

Pigs sweat; men perspire and women glow...see the distinction?

I live in Texas now, but went back to a game in Fayetteville in 09.  When we called the Hogs for the first time at the game....I couldn't believe what I was hearing.  I asked the person who I was sitting beside what in the world was going on.  I thought it just might have been someone who had gotten into the "Razorback Eggnog" a little early and was just messing around.  He said a lot of people had started putting the shrill new beginning to the Hog Call.  Can someone enlighten me how and when this got started?

Though I would weigh in on the Hog call.  Growing up on a poor dirt farm in Arkansas, we had hogs nearly all the time.  We would call them to us by saying Woo Pig, however, rarely did we need to call them to the feed trough, they came running and pushing each other.  On the other hand when we wanted them out from under our feet or away from us we said sooie pigs.  I am not sure that was the right thing to say however the hogs didn't know better either so it worked.  Anyone else out there that thought sooie was a get out of here call?

LOL thank you everyone for making my point- WOO PIG SOOIEE is not the sound a pig makes, so saying that the awoooo isn't good because we aren't the wolves is retarded.

As others mentioned, it is a proprietary way to call hogs to trough, and there are doubtless countless variations on a theme.  Its fine if you don't like the awooo (I doubt those who do it care what you think, but if it raises your blood pressure I think its funny), but why do you feel the need to justify your dislike using faulty logic?

Razorback Ron- nobody I know of has called me an idiot in quite a while.  I do find it funny that I get more smites for commenting on this thread than arguing about football.  Lighten up, Francis.

I don't think it's so much "old vs young" as it is tradition vs trend. Myself included, i would imagine there's several other hogvillians in their 20's still that do not like the howling.
I guess it's just a question of taste.

I am more annoyed by the crying about it than I am the actual call.

It only really bothers me when you come across those folks who really want to emphasize a high pitched yelping wind up. I feel like they think it is just super cool. It isn't. But it isn't worth getting upset about either.

20's here.
