Former St. Xavier High School coaches Joe Kroh and Marty O'Toole were among the 12 selections announced yesterday for the 2009 induction class in the Dawahares/KHSAA Hall of Fame.

A standout cross country athlete at St. X, Kroh coached the school's tennis team to 17 state championships before retiring after the 2007 season. He also managed the State Tennis Championships for more than 20 years.

O'Toole, a former state swimming champion himself, coached the Tigers to 20 consecutive crowns from 1989-2008. He recently stepped down as head coach and will be an assistant under his son, Michael, next season.

The induction ceremony will be April 25 at the Lexington Convention Center. The rest of the 2009 class:

Pat Doyle led the North Marshall boys' basketball team to the 1959 state title and was named Mr. Basketball.

Nate Dusing was a multiple state swimming champion at Covington Catholic and set a national record that still stands in the 100-yard butterfly (47.10 seconds).

Betty Dwyer was a fixture as a player, coach, official and athletic director in Jefferson County. She led several track and field and volleyball teams from Angela Merici and Holy Cross to state events.

Robin Harmon Newsome led the Sheldon Clark girls' basketball team to four consecutive state tournaments as a player and led the state in scoring at 32 points per game as a senior.

Mark Higgs rushed for a state-record 6,721 yards at Owensboro and went on to play at the University of Kentucky and for eight seasons in the NFL.

Frank LeMaster lettered in football, baseball and basketball at Bryan Station and played football for UK and the Philadelphia Eagles (1974-83).

John Pelphrey had 2,477 points and 1,318 rebounds during his basketball career at Paintsville and was Mr. Basketball in 1987. He played at UK and now is the men's basketball coach at Arkansas.

Jeff Perkins was an All-State and All-America football player at Somerset, where he now is the principal.

Ken Shields played basketball and baseball at Covington Catholic and was a successful boys' basketball coach at St. Thomas and Fort Thomas Highlands, becoming Northern Kentucky's career leader in victories with a 460-257 record. He went on to coach at Northern Kentucky University.

Bob Tripure is the only coach to win a state baseball title and state basketball championships at two schools. He led Henry Clay to the baseball title in 1973 and the girls' basketball crown in 1983, and he coached Lexington Catholic to the 1999 girls' basketball title.
