I suppose it is still being worked on? I keep getting "Unable to access the search daemon".

More than you've got.  :)  Don't worry, I have a feeling that before football season starts, we'll have search available to all registered members.

Some things have transpired recently that have caused the delay of Beta 4.  Trust me, this is NOT far from my mind, folks.  Allow me to post here what I posted somewhere else...
