Cannon Whitby was in Nolan Richardsons first recruiting class that included Ron Huery.  He could shoot the 3 but was pretty slow and not that tall.  Huery was a good player but had some off the court problems.  He eventually played pretty well as a senior.  Whitby never played up to his potential ? in college.  If you remember Pat Bradley just think of Cannon Whitby as a slower and shorter Pat Bradley that couldn't shoot as well LOL

you're probably hearing a lot of cannon whitby references because a lot of people seem to think rotnei clark may be a whitby clone. they both played for a lower classification in high school. they're both around 6 feet, white and not the most atheletic guys in the world. they both set all kinds of scoring records. whitby never sniffed any serious playing time and was a bust. we'll see how rotnei turns out.

How far out were his shots from?  I remember he stopped way back of the 3 point line.  The ASU guy wouldn't come out on him and Whitby looked at him, shrugged his shoulders, sort of shook his head, and drained the shots.  He forced the OT and the Hogs won pulling away.

Cannon was from Obion County, TN and was Mr. Basketball for his classification his senior year.  Averaged around 40 a game in highschool.  As cowboym said, was in Nolans first recruiting class and was definitely hyped as an all-world scoring machine.  Trouble was when he got to Arkansas, the competition got salty in a hurry.  He went up against bigger, faster, stronger, more athletic players and his career never lived up to the billing.

Upperdeck-hawg has pegged it pretty good...both have similar success in lower division highschool ball, both white, both around 6 foot tall, not overly athletic.  Cannon's career was less than remarkable and that's the reason for some peoples doubts on how good Clark will be.

Cannon would have faired a lot better on Nolan's later teams.  When Whitby played - Nolan was running 40 minutes of pressing D - not exactly Whitby's forte.  Also, there were very few set plays on offense that allowed for perimeter screens.  Later (like when we won the championship in '94), Nolan's game plan had settled down A LOT.  we were only pressing for half a game, and the half court offense allowed for a lot more screens (i.e. the slowest defender in UA history - Scotty Thurman - was able to flourish).

Whitby was a good shooter and always played his best when given a chance.  I always wonder why we don't list all of the 6'7" "big city" busts throughout Razorback history whenever we recruit another one of those.

Wasn't Whitby the one who made the long range last second shot to beat ASU in the NIT('87 I believe)?  It was in Nolan's second year, and I still believe that had we lost that game to ASU in Barnhill JFB would have fired Nolan.  IMO, that shot saved Richardson's job.....and I believe it was Whitby who hit it.

Yeah McKellar was a Hog that year.  I have the video tape.  I know I shouldn't say it here, but I was cheering for ASU that game.  Of course it was one of ASU's greatest teams and one of UA's worst, but still as a teenager it was just exciting as heck to me to see David beating Goliath.

Back to Cannon Whitby, me and my friends in high school used to pull our socks up to our knees and mimic his shooting style, just being goofy though, not like we idolized him.  I saw his little brother play in high school at a tourny in Jonesboro and he could light it up too.  He seemed bigger, was pretty cocky, and was a threat to shoot as soon as he crossed the half.

When I think of great Arkansas streak shooters I think of Al Dillard.  He was second in 3pt attempts and 3pt fg in that 94-95 runner up season yet he only averaged 12.5 minutes per game.  If he was hot he would shoot from the Hog's snout with no hesitation.

The thing about Cannon and his little brother is they both played cor their father and had carte blanche to shoot . Little brother shot the longest shots I've even seen. Ironically he made the ones four or five steps past half court but missed the regular 3p shots. Both were novelties as most coaches would have their players shoot higher percentage shots. Rotnei shot the ball more successfully

Don't know anything about him. Was trying to remember when he played and googled him. Saw this thread and link to his linkedin profile. Thought it was impressive that he is the President of a large company so posted it in the old thread.

Just thought he might still have a close connection to the Hogs since he played and graduated from UA.

Without googling, only going by memory, he was a fan favorite who got in the game only if we were killing somebody.  If he scored the place went nuts.

If I remember correctly, he was a high school scoring machine that had unbelievable range.   However, he rarely saw the court as a hog.

Sounds about right.  Didn't have the physical tools, especially for our style of play and the depth of our bench, to play regularly...

I used to wear his arse out at the HYPR back in the day. He couldn't play a lick of d. He was a whiner and played with a hot head buddy I had to give an over night all expenses paid trip to the hospital while playing one day.

He would have scored a lot at a lower level college because he had a quick release and was knock down against mere mortals. Problem is, Div 1 guys back in those days weren't mere mortals.

I love Hogville.

Funny how that(the whiner part) was not part of the overall perception of Hog fans during his playing days.

Great story.

Forgotten in all this is that he was caught up in scandal his senior season that cost him a whopping 10 games of suspension.  That's a significant amount of missed playing time, and the team sort of moved on without him.  He was never really integrated into the game plan after that, and the Hogs went to the Final Four.

Tough break, but he is remembered fondly as one of the original long-range bombers.  I'm glad to see he has been successful.  WPS!

well I work indirectly with him and he is a total jerk and has been successful in parlaying that into a profitable career.  He has been fired several times along the way.  i got to give it to him though.  He somehow manages to land another high paying gig.  He is working for Sysco Foods in Memphis and is not very well liked there either.  he was actually fired from Sysco in Arkansas several years back

I loved Cannon Whitby...he'd be on my all time favorite hog team if I drafted one.

Not sure why I connected with him so much but every time he came in the game and popped a 3, we'd go nuts in my house.

Biley

Biley was a bit of a bust, that's true but let's just say it.  What Nolan did, starting him in the national championship game vs Duke...that was awesome.

How far out were his shots from?  I remember he stopped way back of the 3 point line.  The ASU guy wouldn't come out on him and Whitby looked at him, shrugged his shoulders, sort of shook his head, and drained the shots.  He forced the OT and the Hogs won pulling away.

Loved Biley's attitude... or at least what I perceived as a good attitude.  Yes, starting him in the championship game was awesome!  A bit of a tribute to him for all his hard work.  And he did play hard on defense, so having him start didn't hurt us.  I can't remember who's spot he took in the lineup, but I figure it helped them have fresher legs later in the game when we really needed that.

Plenty of responses here nail who Whitby was, but he also had a unique shooting motion.  Kind of like a flip of the ball from chest/neck height, if I recall correctly.  Another reason why he really had to be open to get off a shot.

I think it was Darnell's spot.

Hardin's Sysco (now known as Sysco Memphis) is probably the worst wholesale food service provider in Memphis. You couldn't pay me enough to work for them.

I followed the Hogs closely then but I'm drawing a blank on what this scandal was about.  Anyone remember?

Goggled this:

Arkansas senior guard Cannon Whitby

was ruled ineligible to play Thursday because his name appeared

on several lists confiscated from a man charged with running

a betting operation, Coach Nolan Richardson said.

I followed the Hogs closely then but I'm drawing a blank on what this scandal was about.  Anyone remember?

There was a bookie in Fayetteville with whom many of the students were placing bets on sports (except the Cubs.  I seem to recall he was a relative of one of their players.)  He was busted and he had records on hand of all of his active customers.  The authorities did  not pursue legal action against the customers, but it is against NCAA rules for student-athletes to wager (legal or not) on any NCAA sport.  All of the Razorback athletes in his files were suspended for roughly 1/3 of the season depending on the sport.  Whitby missed 10 games.  It seems a few baseball players missed about 20 games.  There were others in various sports - none in football - but I don't recall the details of their suspension.

Honestly,  I thought it was much ado about nothing,  but most NCAA infractions are.  But the suspensions were significant, especially for a senior like Whitby.
