What is the story on the new player from Europe?

He can play this year.

6'6" 205 guard is all I heard on the radio.
The first thing I heard today was that he grew up on a pig farm. That's quite a start in my book. And my last memory was watching him hang 70 on Nebraska. Just those two facts are enough (for me to like him). Then, I hear that he's out of the Hayden Fry-Bill Snyder-Barry Alvarez coaching tree. Oh, that's enough for me to like a lot. Then, I hear he's got a 27-year-old wife. Okay, we can stop. I like him.

Since, they are talking about him on Sports Rap.  He is from Georgia and should be eligible to play.  Great outside shooter, which we desperately need.

The kid can shoot free throws.  That's a plus.

Shawn and Wally on Sports Rap were saying it sounds like he might be able to play the point.  That would be awesome.

Thats great news. I was worried about who would be backing up Weems this year, and I like international players because they learn fundamentals way before they learn anything else about the game. He should get good minutes this year.  +1 coach Pel.

very very very good news.

We just got a little bit better next season.

Now we'll be able to give Weems and Beverley some rest.

Rooka

WOW, VERY COOL, he seems like one of those guys that will come over and just bust onto the scene, great to have him aboard!

Yeah as hard as I am on Ol Frank he defenitely made a good move for a change. But I wont speak too soon because  he still has 4 months to screw something else up. LOL

Yeah, he might call Pel in after the first game and tell him all the players have to shoot the "two-hand underhand" shot.

The kid can stroke it.., hopefully he can in games as well.

this is the kind of unconventional move that really excites me about the new bball staff. pel knew we needed help this year, and he went out and got it. getting an international kid is really awesome. the int'l game is so much more pure than the US game right now that it isn't funny. i think he'll flourish with good athletes around him. best news i've heard all day...well, except for winning 41,000 pennies at the cherokee casino.

coach, my back hurts

Other than a tad bit of foot work on his jumper, the kid looks to have very good form shooting the ball.  Not that you have to have good form to be productive, but the two go hand-in-hand most times.  I think he "could" be a good one and is indeed a good pick up.  I really hope Pel does good.  I hope he stays here for a LONG while.

Can the kid speak English?  And how does a foreigner go about getting qualified?  I know they make JUCO's jump through hoops to get into a 4yr school.

I'm encouraged about a program which can bring in a kid from an Eastern bloc country.  Having someone like that around usually is a positive.  Their work ethic and focus is often times different because they remember too well what it was like where they came from.

I said this in another thread.  I wish someone would walk up to me right now and hand me a dollar for everyone I've met from the former USSR who is working 2-3 jobs to put themselves through college.  It's humbling to see, and it makes you appreciate what you have.

Please.  Think Nowitzki, Stojakovic, Drazen Petrovic, (a lot more) and all the teams that have been giving the U.S.A. fits in international competition.  They are much more fundamentally sound, not just "streetballers", which is what the Hogs desperately need.

every time you hear of a country's player of the year, you think of cranford? wow, i didn't know you thought so highly of him. cranford was nowhere near this guys league. PC wasn't a household name while he was in high school, so it was no surprise that he didn't pan out in the SEC.

Those guys play on national squads on a regular basis long before international and olympic competitions begin.  By the time those comps roll around, they're already well-versed.

Our guys do not play on national squads until their seasons are over at the college and pro levels, and then they go thru all the tryouts for the national team.  It's hard to gel into a real team in that short of a period of time.

Right, but their fundamentals come into play also, they are not one-on-one "and 1" type players, they look to pass and also have very good shooting skills.  Again, something the Hogs have not had.

Oh, I agree.  Good passing and perimeter shooting will create alot of offense for us, and I believe that plays right into the hands of what Pelphrey wants to do at UA (aside from eventually being hired at UK).

that is sad. we have had plenty of great basketball players recently. ronnie brewer, joe johnson, and now patrick beverley among others. we haven't had a good mix of skill and athelticism until this year, but to say that they have all been streetballers is not accurate.

Basketball needs to be rid of all these thugs.  Iverson, Artest, and several more.  I dont really care though, its the NBA.  Everyone knows college is better.

cardinalhawg

I believe that this player from the country of Georgia will be our best newcomer this year.  He provides an ability with his shooting to along with his height making him a key candidate to backup both the small forward and shooting guard positions.

yraciv

That thug comment is uncalled for.  You don't know what these kids have overcome to be successful.  I admire any athlete who has worked hard in athletics to get themself a better life.  What makes Allen Iverson a thug?  Is it the practice comment b/ he isn't constantly popping up in jail or going to dogfights.  He grew up in the same area as Vick.  He gives it his all when he is on the court, and gives more effort then anyone I've ever seen that size.  Thugs are people like Tank Johnson and Pacman Jones, but you really need to open up your perspective toward people of other races.

Have you heard of the Quote? " There are only two ways out the hood sports or sell drugs".

What about college, working a regular job and 100 other things I know people have done including myself to get out the hood that are non sports related and perfectly legal??? I heard the quote but anyone who thinks it is true is totally out of touch.

I thought you were just stating the quote until I read on and saw this

"A.I is a thugs because he's got those corn rows and he doesn't like to practice..."

Then I knew you probably fall into that out of touch category as well.
FYI that  was very ignorant and offensive.  Next time you want to use a rap song to generalize something you have no knowledge of try quoting Common instead of Biggie Smalls. Wake up Its 2007.

In my opinion the international game we compete against is more "team" oriented than what we play on a day to day basis.  "Notshavin", I think, hit it on the head. Most of what we have now to pick from is "me" type players. Weems, Beverley, are a couple that appear to NOT be in that mode. Usually a team will beat 5 players. I like what Coach P is doing. I am ready to get my tickets and watch some basketball, beginning with MIDNIGHT!

I'd take AI, Artest, Rodman, Spree, and Lambier (All accused of various degrees of thuggery) and whip any starting five in the NBA. Today. And anyone who donesn't believe Lambier counts because he's white, look around. There are plenty of white thugs, check out capital hill and any board room.
I support the Razorbacks in the city that never sleeps.

AMEN to that.  That team would get beat six ways to Sunday by a team like Phoenix or San Antonio.

have not heard much comment about this guy in the practices.  Did he actually make it on campus, enrolled in classes etc?  I know we have heard very little about practice in general but I have not seen anything about him recently
