Suggested Hotels/ places/cities for Auburn game.
« Reply #16450 on: October 17, 2016, 02:31:49 pm »

Never traveled to Auburn. Any suggestions on a city and/or hotel that is within driving distance (three hours or so) or places in Auburn? Not having reservations to this point am guessing we will need to drive in for the game. Any information about where Razorback fans are staying would be appreciated.

Stay in Montgomery, Ala., or Columbus, Ga.

There's stuff available in Auburn, but it's overpriced.

there are a lot of hotel choices off exit 11, I85 and in the East Chase area.  Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Fairfield Inn, Comfort Inn, etc.  You will be about 34-45 minutes from Auburn and it is an easy drive.

Solid advice - it is about a 45-min/1hr drive to Auburn from Montgomery.

Montgomery is a solid choice but not much to do or eat there.  We usually stay in B-Ham, better choices for dinner on Friday night.  If you get up
early and hit the road you can be in Auburn by 9 for a full day of tailgating and then after the game, you are that much closer to home.

Be aware, if you want to get to Montgomery or if you decide to go on further east to Auburn or Columbus.  You need to be through B-ham by 3:30, maybe 3:45 on
a Friday.  There is so much traffic heading south and east to Auburn.  You might as well park and eat dinner in B-Ham.

This can be hard to do from LRK or Fayetteville as we always stop in Memphis for Que.  With a big traveling party after lunch you always make more stops than you
figure and you will need gas and it never fails.  We hit B-Ham at 4:00 and it cost us almost 2 hours in traffic and we don't get to Auburn before 8 or so.

This will be my 7th trip to Auburn, great fans, neat town, not as much to do as Fayetteville but a fun trip.  We've stayed in B-Ham, Montgomery, Atlanta and Auburn.
If this is your one trip maybe you spend the cash and stay in town but it's pricey.   Be sure to be in your seat early to watch the Eagle fly.
It is a great experience and tradition of the SEC.

All I can say is avoid the Knights Inn in Opeleika.

But you probably didn't need to be told that.

Positive experience in Auburn (minus the Hogicide).
« Reply #16468 on: October 24, 2016, 04:51:38 pm »

Other than the obvious nuclear meltdown of our team, I did enjoy my first visit to Auburn. It is a beautiful campus located in a scenic area of Alabama and the fans were extremely polite and friendly. The Auburn fans in the section where I was located even expressed a little empathy when we ran a kickoff back for numerous yards before being negated by a flag on the play as one of them said "Wow, these guys can't catch a break!". Anyway, thanks Auburn fans for not making the worst game I have ever witnessed in person even worse. Stay classy my friends.  :razorback:

I'm really sorry you had to spend money to attend that game. You should get a refund like you do at theaters when the movie is bad.

Note: Not all travellers will choose Bryant-Denny stadium as the starting point.

Stop for food: Laurel, Miss., is about halfway from Tuscaloosa to Baton Rouge, so itís a decent place to stop and grab some grub.

Movoto suggests the La Fleur Cafe, which as the name suggests, has plenty of New Orleans-style flair.

If you want to save your Louisiana eating until you actually arrive (and you do), TripAdvisor offers up Vicís, the Smokehouse of Laurel and Phillips Drive-In as culinary alternatives.

You won't find much in Starkville, but keep in mind you have Tupelo and Tuscaloosa each about an hour away in different directions.

And I should mention Tuscaloosa means Dreamland.

No, I haven't been thereóone of the few venues I've never visited and one I don't ever plan to visit.  I like listening to sounds in a stadium full of great fans.  But a place where cow bells is all you can hear is not very appealing...

Hope you can still hear when the game is over.  Tinnitus is an awful thing.

Just follow the signs off of 45 to the campus/stadium. Then you will be directed to the parking areas. We've down to several games, beginning when Jackie Sherrill was still there. The cowbells do get annoying, but its part of the atmosphere. On our last trip down, we did encounter some rather mouthy fans, but the was the first time for that. We had some crappy upper level seats and that was like climbing the pyramids at giza to get to them. Otherwise, have fun, and hopefully we'll bring home a W!

It was several years ago, but not really anymore.  Aside from the bathroom phenomenon that Lanny described, it's fairly nice.  And it's a really nice campus despite what most people think.  The tailgating is spread around campus but the heaviest concentration is right beside the stadium on the jumbotron side.  As for restaurants in and around Starkville, there are several good ones but you have to know where to look.  Most are fairly small, mom & pop type places.

FYI, our oldest graduated from State and we've been to probably 8-10 games there, so we know the town and the school very well.

Oby's is pretty good.  The same bunch that owns Newk's and McAllister's owns Oby's.

The Little Dooey is the traditional place to go in Starkpatch.  I've heard Mugshots is good, too.

Tupelo is probably the best place to stay.  Go to Memphis, stay on 55, then take the South Lamar exit.  S. Lamar turns into US78.  It's about an hour to Starkville down US45. If you want to stay a little closer to Arkansas, but don't want a very long drive back from Starkville, the Hampton Inn at New Albany, MS is nice.  It's about another 30 mins west of Tupelo on 78.

If you're coming from South Arkansas, just get on US82, cross the river at Lake Village, and stay on 82.  After what feels like several thousand miles, it'll take you right to Starkville.

Well, the absolute best place to stay is the Old Waverly plantation resort in West Point (about 10 miles north of Starkville on Hwy 45).  Beautiful, out-in-the-boonies golf resort with cottages.  They've held US Women's Opens there.  However, this close to game day, availability might be a problem.
