...Former Auburn QB Barrett Trotter?

QuoteFormer Auburn quarterback Barrett Trotter is the new head football coach at Bayside Academy in Daphne.

Headmaster Scott Phillips announced the hire late Thursday afternoon.

Trotter replaces Phil Lazenby as the Admirals' head coach and is just the third football coach in school history.

Trotter comes to Bayside from Briarwood Christian where he has taught and coached for the past two seasons. He helped with quarterbacks last year and coached tight ends and wide receivers. He also has college coaching experience at Auburn and North Carolina and NFL experience with the Los Angeles Rams.

Trotter played quarterback at Auburn from 2008-2011. He was the backup to Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton during the Tigers' 2010 BCS title run and started in 2011. He was team captain as a senior.

"I've got so many memories from that year," he said. "The unbelievable Iron Bowl (famously labeled the Cam-back). What people forget about that season is we had so many other close games. We had close games against Kentucky and Clemson. I think we won both of those on field goals at the end. Then obviously we won the championship on a field goal at the end. That team learned how to overcome adversity and not let the outside noise get in."

Like Cam getting paid.

...Gia Duddy?

QuoteShe's a social media influencer — and a pretty good one at that —

Yes, she is following Levis as he begins his career with the Tennessee Titans, and was preparing to apartment shop when she spilled the beans on their planned setup.

"We have been doing long distance for over two years now, been dating almost three," Duddy said. "So, we're tired of living separate. We are going to move to the same city ... different apartments though."

That last part — the whole separate pads thing —

"Everyone always asks why we are not living together because I guess that like weird," she said. "But my theory is that if we are meant to be together, we can live together for the rest of our lives, and we are still young. I'm 21. I'm not ready to live with a man just yet."

Duddy said she does think she wants a roommate.

"I conveniently have a couple of friends that are also moving to Nashville," she said.

... Ole Miss hot shot QB Matt Corral who was seriously injured in the bowl game

Matt Corral wants to play for Frank Reich in Carolina, as the Panthers get set to begin the Bryce Young Error

"Me personally, if it was up to me, I don't want to be traded. I like the people here. I want to play for Coach Reich."

QuoteOle Miss QB is 3rd on the depth chart behind Young and Andy Dalton. On the night the Panthers drafted the former Alabama QB, Corral posted to Instagram that said you're in the "wrong place" if you're "not appreciated" before closing with "don't stay in a place where no one sees your value." But asked about that on Monday, Corral said it had nothing to do with football, and it was personal.

John, Brodie Croyle honored with ASWA Presidents' Award

The two former Alabama football stars have helped more than 2,000 children since Big Oak Ranch opened

QuoteBrodie Croyle never expected to return to the Gadsden area and take over Big Oak Ranch.

His father, John Croyle, said it never crossed his mind that his son wouldn't come back.

Together, the two former Alabama football stars and their families have helped more than 2,000 abandoned, neglected and/or abused children since John Croyle opened the Ranch in 1974.

"There has never been a doubt in my mind that God would provide for these children," John Croyle said. "There has never been a question in my mind I made the right decision. I've never asked, 'what if?' This was all I ever wanted to do. I wish I could have done everything right. I haven't, but God can and does use anyone. I fit that category."

Croyles were honored with the President's Award at the 51st annual Alabama Sports Writers Association convention on Sunday night at Jacksonville State. The award is presented to the individual – or in this case individuals – who displays outstanding community service and overall excellence while exemplifying the spirit of athletics in the state...

...Blake Sims?

Where is Blake Sims, the former record-setting Alabama quarterback?

QuoteWhat happened to Blake Sims, the former (and underrated) Alabama quarterback whose lone season under center gave fans electrifying moments and ushered in a new era of offense in Tuscaloosa?

AL.com's sports video team produced a video updating fans on where Sims is today, noting people might forget about him because he didn't win a national championship under Nick Saban and gets lost in the shuffle after future NFL stars like Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones played after him.

The star high school quarterback from Gainesville signed as an athlete with Alabama with the expectation that he would play either wide receiver or defensive back.

Under first-year Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin, Sims broke Alabama's single-season passing record with 3,487 yards and 28 touchdowns, a record previously held by McCarron. Sims' senior season saw some thrilling moments including a 43-yard touchdown run in a rout of Texas A&M, and some fourth quarter heroics at LSU where Bama won in overtime after an unlikely last-minute drive...

He attended the NFL Draft Combine, but he was ultimately not drafted in 2015. He tried out for the Green Bay Packers and the Washington Commanders but did not make either roster.

Sims then signed with and played for the Toronto Argonauts and Saskatchewan Roughriders for very brief stints in the Canadian Football League.

In 2016, he joined the emerging National Gridiron League in Australia where he hoped to play for the Wollongong Devils until the league never got off the ground.

Sims took another crack at the NFL in 2016 and 2017...

He returned to Alabama where he was selected in the second round of the quarterback draft to the Birmingham Iron in the Alliance of American Football League.

In 2021, Sims started a game for the Spokane Shock in an Indoor Football League game against the Sioux Falls Storm.

In February 2022, with Paul Finebaum, he retired from football. Finebaum asked Sims how a guy retires at his age, saying "You're too young to retire." Sims said, "Yeah, but God uses us in special ways." The Frisco Fighters' official website published an article celebrating Sims' contribution to the organization, calling him an "unselfish" player willing to do anything to help the team win.

In March 2023, Sims was named offensive coordinator for Mount Bethel Christian Academy in Marietta, Georgia.

...Chris Davis, Auburn's Kick Six hero?

Chris Davis stamped his ticket to Iron Bowl immortality with a 109-yard scamper that college football will never forget, but where is the Auburn man behind the Kick Six?

QuoteWoodlawn star signed with Auburn in 2010. He played cornerback for four seasons, recording 74 total tackles and 15 pass deflections his senior season in 2013. A gifted return specialist, Davis had one touchdown on 17 attempts that same year. But those return skills were put to historic use in the 2013 Iron Bowl, when he returned an Alabama field goal attempt more than 100 yards for a walk-off touchdown that clinched the Tigers the SEC West. Auburn would dominate Missouri in the SEC Championship Game before falling to Florida State in the final BCS Championship.

He signed as an undrafted free agent with the San Diego Chargers, where he was a return specialist.

Davis then signed with the San Francisco 49ers practice squad in November 2015. He was promoted to the active roster eventually but was later placed on the injured reserve list.

Two years later, he signed with the Birmingham Iron in the Alliance of American Football League. He never saw any playing time while still on the injured reserve list, and then the league folded.

In 2020, he was selected by the Seattle Sea Dragons of the XFL, but Davis would pursue a career in coaching instead.

He's now the cornerbacks coach for Pinson Valley.

...former Auburn long snapper Robert Shiver?

Lindsay Shiver charged in Bahamas in plot to kill her husband

QuoteLindsay Shiver, 36, conspired to kill her estranged husband, Robert Shiver, in a plot that also included 28-year-old Terrance Bethel, who is reported to be her lover, and 29-year-old Faron Newbold. Both men were also charged in the unsuccessful attempt.

While investigating a break-in at a bar in Guana Cay, police reportedly found WhatsApp messages on a suspect's phone detailing the murder plot.

...Marcell Dareus?

Dareus has lipoma removed on TV by Dr. Pimple Popper

QuoteMarcell Dareus knocked heads with NFL offensive linemen for nine seasons. He did it well enough to earn two Pro Bowl invitations, first-team All-Pro recognition in 2014 and a six-year, $96.574 million contract.

Yet the former Huffman High star and Alabama Crimson Tide standout said of Dr. Sandra Lee, the dermatologist who stars on the TLC reality series "Dr. Pimple Popper," "That little woman scares me."

Dareus' visit to Skin Physicians and Surgeons in Upland, Calif., was chronicled in Wednesday's episode.

Dareus sought help from Dr. Pimple Popper with a lump above his left eye. The former defensive tackle said it had appeared after a particularly good hit while he was playing for the Buffalo Bills in 2016.

Dareus said the team doctor told him the lump was nothing to be concerned about, but he was.

"I worried about it rupturing," Dareus said. "I'm thinking this is going to burst, and I'm going to have blood going down my jersey. My eyes going to be gone."

Dareus said he had gotten to the point where he felt as though people were looking at his lump rather than at him.

Lee diagnosed Dareus' lump as a lipoma, a benign tumor made of fatty tissue.

The physician removed the lipoma, much to Dareus' satisfaction.

"That is crazy," Dareus said upon looking at himself in a mirror after the procedure. "I feel amazing. I haven't seen that guy since I was 25 years old, 26 years old. ...

"I just can't stop smiling."

Dareus was the Defensive MVP of Alabama's 37-21 victory over Texas in the BCS national-championship game on Jan. 7, 2010.

Dareus entered the NFL as the third player picked in the 2011 draft. In his best seasons, Dareus had 71 tackles and 7.5 sacks in 2013 and 10 sacks and 12 tackles for loss in 2014 for the Bills.

A core-muscle injury caused Dareus to miss the final nine games of the 2019 season. After that campaign, the Jaguars declined to pick up their option for the 2020 season on his contract, and Dareus has not played since.

...Henry Ruggs III :hmmm:

Henry Ruggs III's mysterious missing month finally filled in

QuoteOver an objection from the Clark County (Nevada) District Attorney's Office, Judge Ann Zimmerman issued a release order from electronic monitoring for Henry Ruggs III on April 27, 2022.

At the time, the former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver was awaiting his preliminary hearing on charges stemming from a Nov. 2, 2021, wreck in which 23-year-old Las Vegas resident Tina Tintor (and her little dog) was killed.

Zimmerman ruled on a defense motion seeking permission for Ruggs to go to California for medical treatment. The court records showed Ruggs was to be removed from the electronic-monitoring program in Las Vegas on May 2, 2022, and be reinstated to the program no later than June 2, 2022.

With Ruggs scheduled to be sentenced to prison by Judge Jennifer Schwartz on Wednesday, the former Alabama standout's attorneys, David Chesnoff and Richard Schonfeld, filed a 69-page document for the judge's consideration.

According to the document, Ruggs underwent in-patient treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder for 28 days in May 2022 at a facility in Newport Beach, California.

The State of Nevada contended Ruggs was at fault in a deadly accident that occurred in Las Vegas at 3:39 a.m. Nov. 2, 2021. That's when a Corvette driven by Ruggs struck a Toyota RAV4 driven by Tintor. Tintor and her dog died in the wreck.

Law-enforcement authorities say Ruggs' Corvette was traveling at 156 mph 2.5 seconds before impact and 127 mph at the time of the collision. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department used data from the car's airbag control module...

O.J. compares Henry Ruggs' prison sentence to his own: 'Math doesn't add up'

QuoteO.J. Simpson said the "math doesn't add up" when comparing his jail sentence to that of former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III.

The former Alabama wideout was sentenced to 3 to 10 years in prison on Wednesday for vehicular manslaughter in Las Vegas that killed 23-year-old Tina Tintor and her dog.

"I know I went to college on a football scholarship, but somehow this math doesn't add up to me," Simpson said.

On Nov. 2, 2021, Ruggs, who was intoxicated, was driving 160 mph when he hit Tintor's car.

"You riding in a car at roughly 160 miles per hour, a public street, killing a girl and her dog and you get three to 10 years?" the 76-year-old Simpson asked.

In 2008, Simpson was sentenced to 33 years in connection to an armed robbery in Las Vegas, with the possibility of parole after 9 years.

"You go to a hotel room that you're invited to, to retrieve your own personal stolen property - property I now have because it was ruled to be mine by the state of California - and you get nine to 33 years?

"Same courthouse, same city, same state. Something just doesn't add up to me. I'm just saying."

Saw the documentary: Soccer mom judge took a big ol' slurp of her SlurpeeTM then handed down OJ's sentence in symbolic timing corresponding to the killings of Nicole Brown-Simpson and Ronald Goldman, the waiter. Fred Goldman was in attendance.

Manning joins University of Tennessee communication department faculty

QuoteManning's joined the University of Tennessee faculty as a "professor of practice" in the College of Communication and Information, it was announced Monday.

According to a release issued on the university's website, Manning "will join select classes during the academic year as a featured expert, bringing significant industry experience to the classroom." Manning's appointment is due to his being a "nationally recognized media personality, entrepreneur, sports commentator and former professional athlete."

47-year-old Manning played quarterback at Tennessee from 1994-97, leading the Volunteers to an SEC championship and finishing second in the Heisman Trophy balloting his senior year. He graduated from UT with a bachelor's degree in speech communication in 1997.

"There is no other ambassador for our college and university like Peyton Manning, and we are proud to welcome him to the college's faculty," said Joseph Mazer, dean of the College of Communication and Information. ...Sean Tuohy :hmmm:

Sean Tuohy calls Michael Oher's allegations insulting: 'We're devastated'

Quote"We're devastated," Tuohy told The Daily Memphian. "It's upsetting to think we would make money off any of our children. But we're going to love Michael at 37 just like we loved him at 16."

Oher, 37, filed the petition Monday, Aug. 14, alleging that when he was 18, the Tuohy family tricked him into signing a document making them conservators and that they made millions off a lie. The petition alleges the Tuohys made deals that made them - and their birth children - millions in royalties from the movie. Oher, on the other hand, got nothing that he says, "would not have existed without him."

Tuohy, an All-American point guard at Ole Miss, said the conservatorship was a way to appease the NCAA during the days leading up to his college football decision. As a supporter of Ole Miss athletics, Tuohy would qualify as a "booster" under NCAA rules.

"Michael was obviously living with us for a long time, and the NCAA didn't like that," Tuohy said. "They said the only way Michael could go to Ole Miss was if he was actually part of the family. I sat Michael down and told him, 'If you're planning to go to Ole Miss — or even considering Ole Miss — we think you have to be part of the family. This would do that, legally.' We contacted lawyers who had told us that we couldn't adopt over the age of 18. The only thing we could do was to have a conservatorship. We were so concerned it was on the up-and-up that we made sure the biological mother came to court."

Tuohy's the SEC's all-time leader in assists. There was none bigger than the one in 2003.

QuoteRookie kicker Anders Carlson made a 57-yard field goal in the Green Bay Packers' 19-15 victory over the Seattle Seahawks during an NFL preseason game on Saturday afternoon.

Carlson's kick was 1 yard short of the franchise record for the longest field goal. But it turned out to be not even the longest in his family...

In the Las Vegas Raiders' 31-16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday night, Daniel Carlson made a 62-yard field goal. In league history, only 14 field goals of at least 62 yards have been made in NFL regular-season games.

...original Aubie :hmmm:

How Auburn's Aubie the Tiger made his grand entrance at Jordan-Hare Stadium 44 years ago today

QuoteAuburn's game against Kansas State on Sept. 15, 1979 is best remembered as the day a refrigerator box was planted on the 50-yard line well before kickoff.

Inside the box was Barry Mask, who toed the line of a heat stroke the entire time as he waited to make his grand entrance.

"Introducing a new Auburn tradition, Aubie the Tiger!"

Auburn marching band struck up a tune and Mask jumped from the box, dressed as Aubie the Tiger, and began dancing to the delight of Tigers' fans.

When Mask finished with his antics, he said he was seeing stars as he went back to the tunnel. The thermometer taped to his chest read 115 degrees.

For nearly 20 years to that point, Aubie was often featured on the covers of Auburn's football programs —

Phil Neel of the Birmingham-Post Herald is credited for creating Aubie, who first appeared on a football program on Oct. 3, 1959 ahead of the Tigers' matchup against Hardin-Simmons.

Aubie's presence on the sidelines was an anomaly.

In the late 1970s, many college football teams used live animals as their mascots. At Auburn, a golden eagle who was ironically named "Tiger" was used.

At the time, Boston College's "Baldy" the eagle was about the only costumed mascot that existed.

But Auburn student government spirit chairman James Lloyd wanted to find a way to entice fans to come to Jordan-Hare Stadium earlier on game days. And he figured the antics of a costumed mascot could be the ticket.

Lloyd sent clippings of Neel's illustrations to Brooks Van-Horn — a famed costume shop in New York. And after dishing out $1,350 for the original costume in 1978, the Aubie costume was born.

Forty-four years later, it's thanks to the creativity of Neel, the initiative of Lloyd and the literal out-of-the-box thinking of Mask that some still get to enjoy the unpredictable antics of Aubie the Tiger on Saturdays.

...Ricardo Louis :hmmm:

10 years after Prayer at Jordan-Hare, Ricardo Louis remembers

Matt Cohen

QuoteBefore he'd find his way onto the field during a timeout or tell Nick Marshall to throw to him or, for some reason he still doesn't know, just keep running until the ball miraculously fell into his hands, Ricardo Louis was at the beach where it all started about eight months prior in Panama City Beach, Florida.

It was spring break in 2013. Auburn had gone 3-9 that past fall, Louis' freshman year. Louis said he was walking off the beach wearing Auburn gear. Coming the other way, were a few Georgia players he recognized.

"They were making fun of us and making fun of the record we had, making us look bad," Louis said in an interview with AL.com. "I took it very personal at that time. I felt embarrassed. In my mind, it was just like, 'We'll see you next year.' That's what I told myself, 'We'll see you guys next year.'"

Louis hadn't forgotten this when he took the field against then-No. 25 Georgia on Nov. 16, 2013. Auburn was 9-1, ranked No. 7. It had already been a stunning turnaround under first-year head coach Gus Malzahn. Win here, and set up the most consequential Iron Bowl in that rivalry's history.

Auburn led 27-10 at halftime and 37-17 with just over 12 minutes to go in the game. Everything collapsed. Ten minutes later, Auburn trailed 38-37. The Tigers got the ball back and faced 4th-and-18 on their own half of the field. There were 36 seconds left.

Marshall had been sacked on third down, which forced Auburn to call timeout. Louis wasn't on the field for during that third down. With time ticking, if not for Auburn having to stop the clock, he wouldn't have gotten on the field.

Louis said he was pacing up and down the sideline. He wanted to be playing on this drive. He looked up in the stands. He could see some fans were hopeful. He could see others with a look on their face seeming to say, "It's over."

But Auburn needed 18 yards, or the game was over. Louis was called on.

"After the play was called, I told Nick to throw the ball," Louis said. "I don't know why. I don't know what made me say that. But I was feeling it that game. I was like, 'Nick, hey man, just throw it. Throw it to me.' He looked at me. He gave me that look. That look maybe lasted like two seconds, but in those two seconds, he gave me that look. You could write a whole book about that look."

So, here's "what was supposed to happen".

Louis was meant to go deep running a post route, but the play was designed for Sammie Coates. Coates ran a deep in route, about 20 yards down the field. He would catch the ball, get the first down, and Auburn would set up for the game-winning field goal. Watch the play again. Coates was wide open.

But in that moment, Marshall never saw him. The ball was going to Louis —

Georgia's defenders jumped into each other, the ball bounced off their hands and tantalizingly trickled through the air back over them. Louis never stopped running. Whatever it was — fate, good fortune, a prayer — Louis was somehow in the perfect place at the perfect time, catching the ball and racing into the endzone.

Auburn would go on to win 44-38. It won the Iron Bowl two weeks later on a miracle that made Louis' moment impossibly take a back seat. It won the SEC and went to the BCS National Championship.

"When I was a kid, I would take a towel wrapped around my neck and just imagine being a superhero," Louis said. "It is a childhood dream, it definitely is. To be a hero, to be considered a hero."

Putting words to history
As soon as Marshall let go of the ball, Gary Danielson thought the pass would be intercepted. Louis had seemed to slow down, he said. Why in the world did that pass not get thrown to Sammie Coates?

"Everything went wrong, except for the outcome," Danielson said in an interview with AL.com.

Danielson was on the call for that memorable game for CBS along with Verne Lundquist.

"Let's it go..." Lundquist said on the broadcast as Marshall threw the ball. Silence as the ball soared through the air. And as it fell into Louis' hands, "Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Oh no! Ricardo Louis!"

Somehow, Lundquist and Danielson have to put words to such a legendary moment, with no time to prepare.

"I remember it like it was yesterday the same feeling of both games of how hard it is not to choke up," Danielson said thinking back to the Prayer at Jordan-Hare and Kick Six. "Then you're trying to do it justice, and listening to what Verne is saying. Verne was at his best on that call and two weeks later the next call. It's also trying to explain to the fans who doesn't have the same perspective as I do just how improbable that this ball should never been thrown. Nobody on the sidelines thought he should have thrown it there. It's almost like a punt and you got a touchdown out of it. Trying to put that into words. I don't even remember what I actually said."

What he said was simple, succinct and only accurate for the following 13 days.

"It's the play of the year," Danielson said on the call.

Origins of 'Prayer at Jordan-Hare'
There's a debate over who had the phrase first. Former Birmingham News/AL.com writer Brandon Marcello claims it was a Kevin Scarbinsky column.

As a writer, it was hard to ignore the prospect of the coming titanic Iron Bowl if Auburn could beat Georgia. And it seemed Auburn was on track to make that happen. Until it blew a 20-point lead in the 4th quarter.

Marcello had to find a way to put it all into words. He tried to find a nickname for it. He tried "Marshall's Miracle," but that wasn't right. Then the right words came.

"In the moment you're trying to not have writer's block because it's a special moment and you want to do justice to what you just saw," Marcello said. "I remember I was sitting next to Kevin Scarbinsky, our columnist at Birmingham News at the time. He had already come up with something and it was perfect. It was the Prayer at Jordan-Hare."

10 years later, Louis is an artist
It took a few years for the gravity of the moment to set in.

"I didn't know at that time when I was 19 years old," Louis said. "It took years for me to really sit back and watch that play over and over again. To really sit back and see the impact it had. What really made it hit home for me was just seeing the fans' reactions to it."

Watching videos of Auburn fans celebrating the play still makes Louis emotional.

After Auburn, Louis went to the NFL, initially with the Cleveland Browns. He started 12 games there over the 2016 and 2017 seasons. He missed the 2018 season with a neck injury and went to the Miami Dolphins where he proceeded to miss the 2019 season with a knee injury. He'd eventually make his way to Canada to play with the Saskatchewan Roughriders —

These days he's back living in Miami. He said he's involved with investing and the stock markets now, trading in the NASDAQ and S&P 500. He's been investing in real estate, too. Sometimes, he said, it's harder than football.

Louis misses football. But in his time away from the game he found a passion for art in his loneliest moments.

"I had to question myself," Louis said. "I felt at the time the only way I could really be happy and feel good about myself is if I'm playing football. I realized that was my only outlet."

It was incredibly difficult to sit at home while he was injured. He wanted to play but he couldn't. He was forced to sit and watch as his friends lived out the dream he wanted. Louis said he needed to find an outlet to "escape the pain."

He picked up a pencil and a sketchbook. It gave him a sense of fulfillment.

"Just like most artists, they always have a piece and there's a story behind it," Louis said. "How they did it, why they did it. And for me, I surrounded all my pieces around the idea of mental health and helping people with issues with mental health because that's essentially what I was dealing with at the time. Me being in a dark place with injuries and not knowing you know which way to go."

Sketches transitioned to abstract paintings which are inspired by an awareness of his own mental health and others'. He paints 60-inch by 72-inch canvases now, typically about once a week. The first painting was called 'Time Flies.' The projects progressively got bolder as Louis got better.

Art got Louis through one of the most difficult parts of his life. He paints about feeling misunderstood in those moments of struggle. He said he paints abstractly because he wants people to feel different emotions when looking at the same piece.

"That's the power of the piece," Louis said. "The idea of it being part of mental health, I mean, it sounds crazy to say but back when I started, I had been dealing with mental health issues with this idea of just not wanting to be here anymore and just being depressed and have anxiety and just not being who you need to be, having peace is art. Art is never perfect."

Time flies over these 10 years. They're meant to be imperfect.

...Henry Ruggs III after his sentencing :hmmm:

QuoteIn May, Ruggs pleaded guilty to one count of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or controlled or prohibited substance resulting in death and one count of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter after reaching a plea arrangement with the Clark County (Nevada) District Attorney's Office.

On Aug. 9, Judge Jennifer Schwartz ("The Trial of OJ Simpson") chose to follow the plea agreement and sentenced Ruggs to from 36 to 120 months in prison for the first count and six months in prison for the second count. The sentences are being served concurrently.

Ruggs was taken to High Desert State Prison, but according to Nevada Department of Corrections records, he's not there now.

Currently, Ruggs is incarcerated at Stewart Conservation Camp.

Most of the inmates at SCC are assigned to 12-man fire crews working with the Nevada Division of Forestry, which has 22 personnel at the prison.

Some SCC inmates work at the Silver State Industries ranch, which grows alfalfa, operates a dairy and raises cattle. Ranch inmates also work training horses for adoption through the Bureau of Land Management's Wild Horse and Burro Program.

The State of Nevada contended Ruggs was at fault in a deadly accident that occurred in Las Vegas at 3:39 a.m. Nov. 2, 2021. That's when a Corvette driven by Ruggs struck a Toyota RAV4 driven by 23-year-old Las Vegas resident Tina Tintor. Tintor and her dog died in the wreck.

They left out Ruggs' speed which was in the triple digits.

Former Auburn QB arrested in Georgia on felony gun charge
Bryce Lazenby | 34 minutes ago

QuoteFormer Auburn QB Nick Marshall was arrested in Georgia on Thursday, police records show, according to WRBL. The former Tigers' QB and a female passenger are now facing felony gun charges after authorities found an "automatic handgun that had been 'modified'."

Marshall is from Wilcox County in Georgia and started his college career with the Georgia Bulldogs. However, the QB never played for the Bulldogs after being removed from the team for an unspecified violation of team rules. (Gun-related :hmmm: )

Marshall then played junior college ball before transferring to Auburn and winning the starting job. In 2013, Marshall threw for 1,976 yards and ran for 1,068 more. The QB accounted for 26 touchdowns and led the Tigers to the BCS National Championship Game. Ultimately, the Tigers fell to the Florida State Seminoles (and the recently available Jimbo).

While with the Jets, Marshall was suspended for 4 games due to testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs.

The Frank Thomas who died at age 93 on Jan. 16, 2023, was an outfielder/third baseman in 16 Major League seasons from 1951 through 1966. He went to the MLB All-Star Game representing the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1954, 1955 and 1958.

Frank Thomas, who is from Columbus, Ga., went to Auburn on a football scholarship but finished his college career as a baseball player. He left Auburn as the seventh player picked in the 1989 MLB draft and played 16 seasons with the White Sox before finishing his career with three seasons split between the Oakland Athletics and Toronto Blue Jays.

In his first seven full MLB seasons, Thomas became the only batter with seven straight years with a .300 batting average, 100 runs, 100 RBIs, 100 walks and 20 home runs. Thomas hit at least 40 home runs in five seasons on his way to 521 and drove in 100 runs 11 times, with a high of 143.

Thomas was the American League MVP in 1993 and 1994 -- the first two of his six consecutive All-Star selections – and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014 in his first year of eligibility.

...Bama's Western icon :hmmm:

The legend of Johnny Mack Brown, Alabama Rose Bowl hero & Western movie icon

By Creg Stephenson

Quote'Whatever happened to Johnny Mack Brown, and Allan 'Rocky' Lane,'

'Whatever happened to Lash LaRue, I'd love to see him again.'

— The Statler Brothers

There have been a number of famous Alabama football players through the years, but only one has been name-checked in a Statler Brothers song and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

That is, of course, Johnny Mack Brown, the Crimson Tide All-America halfback who later became one of the most popular and prolific cowboy movie stars of the 20th century.

It's 98 years ago this week that Brown first made his mark nationally in Alabama's debut Rose Bowl appearance, scoring two touchdowns in a 20-19 victory over Washington that helped carve out a space for the Crimson Tide and Southern football in general within the popular imagination.

Known as "The Dothan Antelope," Brown was one of five football-playing brothers who emerged from that southeast Alabama town most famous for its annual Peanut Festival and went on to the University of Alabama. By the end of his life in 1974, he had nearly 200 film credits to his name.

"Johnny Mack Brown represents an uncommonly full and fulfilling story of celebrity at the intersection of life with not one, but two, powerful myths of American manhood," historian Philip D. Beidler wrote in 1995. "In newspapers and sporting publications across the land, Brown found popular enshrinement along with such golden age heroes as Knute Rockne and Red Grange as the latest All-American champion of the college gridiron.

"And on the screen, during the heyday of the Hollywood cowboy, he inherited the mantle of stardom from the legendary William S. Hart and joined the Saturday-afternoon company of Tom Mix, Buck Jones, Ken Maynard, Hoot Gibson, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers as one of the most-popular Western movie entertainers of his era."

Brown died from kidney failure on Nov. 14, 1974, at age 70. He is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

...Kodi Burns?

New Orleans Saints fire former Auburn quarterback

By Mark Inabinett |

QuoteSince working as a graduate assistant on Gus's first staff at Auburn in 2013 and serving as Samford's running backs coach in 2014, Kodi Burns had taken his coaching career all the way to the NFL.

But after two seasons with the New Orleans Saints, Burns is out, along with offensive coordinator and offensive assistant Bob Bicknell, the NFL team announced on Tuesday.

Saints retained Dennis Allen as their head coach.

"I would like to thank Pete, Bob and Kodi for their service to the New Orleans Saints and to this coaching staff," Allen said in a release from the team.

"I would especially like to thank Pete for his contributions to this staff for 18 seasons. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the job he has done and as a colleague."

Before his coaching career, Burns was a versatile player at Auburn, capping his time on the Plains as a member of the 2010 undefeated BCS national-championship team.

In four seasons at Auburn, Burns completed 111-of-225 passes for 1,312 yards with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions, ran for 799 yards and 14 touchdowns on 214 carries and caught 16 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns.

Burns returned to the Tigers to work as co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach from 2016 through 2018 and passing-game coordinator and wide receivers coach in 2019 and 2020.

Between Auburn and the Saints, Burns was Tennessee's wide receivers coach during the 2021 season.

Petty, who also played for the Birmingham Squadron of the NBA G League, is also charged with driving with a suspended license and reckless driving, according to booking records. He was booked at 9:15 p.m. Saturday and released early Sunday morning. Bond was set at $7,300.

The circumstances surrounding the arrest were not immediately known late Sunday night.

In 131 games over four seasons with Alabama from 2017 to 2021, Petty averaged 11.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists. He received All-SEC second-team recognition in the 2019-20 season and All-SEC first-team recognition in the 2020-21 campaign.

A four-time first-team All-State selection, Petty played on AHSAA Class 5A championship teams at the Huntsville high schools J.O. Johnson in 2015 and 2016 and Mae Jemison in 2017 and won the Alabama Sports Writers Association's Mr. Basketball honor in 2016 and 2017.

After going undrafted in the 2021 NBA draft, Petty signed with the New Orleans Pelicans. Shortly after, he signed with the Birmingham Squadron as an affiliate player. ...JFIII ("Last Chance U.")

Former Auburn quarterback signs with Elks

QuoteFormer Auburn quarterback John Franklin III has signed with the Edmonton Elks, the Canadian Football League team announced on Wednesday.

Franklin spent the past two seasons in the USFL, although he played in only one game for the Memphis Showboats in 2023 before going on injured reserve.

Franklin completed 14-of-26 passes for 204 yards with one touchdown and ran for 430 yards and two TDs for Auburn in 2016 after joining the Tigers from East Mississippi Community College, where he was featured on the first season of the Netflix reality show "Last Chance U."

Franklin switched from quarterback to wide receiver during spring practice in 2017 and caught four passes in the A-Day Game. But Franklin did not play for Auburn in 2017 as he transferred to Florida Atlantic.

Franklin caught on with the Chicago Bears after auditioning as a tryout player at rookie minicamp in 2018. A cornerback for Chicago, Franklin spent time on the Bears' practice squad before joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' practice squad on Nov. 13, 2019.

In Franklin's only NFL regular-season appearance, the Bucs used him as a wildcat quarterback in the 2019 regular-season finale. He took the first two snaps of the second half and ran for 11 yards on his first NFL rushing attempt.

In 2020, Tampa Bay switched Franklin from cornerback to wide receiver, but he suffered a season-ending knee injury during training camp.

CFL teams open training camps in May. Edmonton will kick off its 75th season on June 8 with a home game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Elks went 4-14 in 2023 and finished last in the CFL West.

Jim Tressel visits Ohio State spring practice, shares special message

by:

QuoteDuring Saturday's spring practice, Ohio State had a legend stop by the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Legendary coach Jim Tressel was in the building, and he had a message for the Buckeyes afterward.

Ryan Day has spoken about the impact Tressel had on him when it comes to special teams duties. The two spoke on the phone, and Tressel said he used to split up special teams duties with position coaches. Day adopted a similar philosophy this year.

"Carry the banner," Tressel said. "Be proud, because when you get old and come back and look, you're gonna say, 'I can't believe God gave me a chance to be a Buckeye.' Because there's nothing like it."

If there's anyone to get that point across, it's Tressel. During his time as Ohio State head coach from 2001-11, he had a 106-22 overall record and took the Buckeyes to six bowl victories. That includes the 2002 Fiesta Bowl, which won the program a national championship for the first time since 1970.

Tressel's return to campus also got a shoutout from Bjork, who welcomed him back via social media.

"Great to hang out with @JimTressel5 today & talk @OhioStateFB football, college sports & leadership," Bjork wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday. "Awesome to have you back on campus Coach."

Tressel led TheTM Ohio State through TattooGate.

...Damien Harris :hmmm:

Former Alabama running back announces retirement from NFL

By Mark Inabinett |

QuoteFormer Alabama running back Damien Harris has "found the strength to walk away from the game I love so much" and is retiring after five NFL seasons:

"For the past 20 years, playing the game of football has been one of the greatest privileges of my life.

"Getting to represent the name on the back of my jersey on and off the field, getting to compete at the highest level with and against the best competitors while winning championships and being coached by two of the greatest head coaches of all time in Nick Saban and Bill Belichick are all just a small part of what God has done in my life with the game of football.

"The people I've met, the places I've been and will go on to go, the experiences and memories I've made, the impact I've been able to make to this point, these are things that mean the most to me.

"Gratitude is defined as 'the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.' Today, I am grateful I have found the strength to walk away from the game I love so much."

A third-round selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, Harris hardly played in his rookie season with the New England Patriots. He then led the Patriots in rushing yards in 2020 and 2021. Harris remained New England's starting running back in 2022, but he missed six games and most of two others because of injuries.

Last offseason, Harris left the Patriots for the Buffalo Bills in free agency, but he played in only the first six games of the 2023 season.

On Oct. 15, Harris was tackled by linebacker Bobby Okereke on his first carry of Buffalo's game against the New York Giants. Harris did not get up after the 1-yard gain, and players from both teams waved urgently for help from the sidelines.

After being attended to on the field, Harris was strapped to a backboard and loaded into an ambulance at Highmark Stadium to be carried to Erie County Medical Center.

Harris entered the NFL's concussion protocol. Later in the week, Buffalo placed the running back on injured reserve, and Bills coach Sean McDermott said Harris had a neck sprain. He did not play again.

In 44 NFL regular-season games, Harris ran for 2,188 yards and 21 touchdowns on 472 carries. He also caught 42 passes for 297 yards.

As a freshman at Alabama, Harris had a limited role with Derrick Henry and Kenyan Drake ahead of him on the depth chart of the 2015 CFP national-championship team. Harris then led Alabama in rushing yards in the 2016, 2017 and 2018 seasons, with the 2017 squad also winning the CFP national title.

Mark Stoops had one little sheep in the fold as a 5-star TB was playing just 20 miles south of Kroger. The King Saban, eyed the landscape and took the TB from Stoops despite having a full stable of TB including Henry. He would do a similar thing with Mac Jones a few years later.

...Chris Smelley, former South Carolina QB :hmmm:

By Ben Thomas |

QuoteChris Smelley knew within an hour of leaving the shore to go fishing in his kayak off the Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday morning that he was in trouble.

The Sylacauga High head football coach and former South Carolina quarterback left his family's Grayton Beach vacation spot about 7:30 a.m. CST for what he expected to be an hour or two of fishing and relaxation.

What followed was a long day on the water

"I went out with nothing," he told AL.com on Friday morning.

"It was really calm on the shore when I went out. I didn't have a life jacket or anything. But the wind blew me out pretty quickly. I got out about a half mile from the coast, and I knew right away I was in trouble. I made three really hard paddles, giving it all I could, and was still moving backward.

"I knew this wasn't good."

By late morning, Smelley's wife, Josie, was worried. By early afternoon, a lot of other people were as well.

The Walton County Sheriff's Department posted on social media at midday that a search was on for Smelley. The Coast Guard joined in, as did Smelley's friends. As the sun went down – approximately 7:15 p.m. – he was found and rescued. He said his lips were a bit sunburned, but he had no other injuries.

"The big takeaway for me is the absolute power of prayer," he said.

Alabama Face Guy 12 years later: Catching up with viral fan

Final Four game day

By Michael Casagrande

QuoteAlabama basketball fans have come and gone -- celebrated and suffered -- over the decades leading up to Saturday's Final Four flag planting.

Some became famous. Others infamous.

But there's just one Face.

You remember the one, rising to fame in perhaps the leanest of years when Final Four runs were celebrated in the NIT instead of its big brother. A viral sensation that transcended sport, that mug was practically everywhere in 2012.

More than a decade later, that Face and its owner Jack Blankenship is doing more smiling than ... well ... that menacing Face.

When the Crimson Tide tips off Saturday night in the Arizona desert, the Face 2.0 will be watching along from his Manhattan apartment -- living a life he at least partially credits to Alabama hoops and his first brush with fame.

"I have a lot of fun watching them with my wife in our apartment," Blankenship said by phone Friday. "It's quite the opposite environment from the front row of the Crimson Chaos section. It's really been a roller coaster since my freshman year."

The Face became a meme in the infancy of memes back as a freshman attending Alabama basketball games in 2012. The Tuscaloosa native was sitting in the student section, then located behind the basket closest to the visiting bench, where he held out a cardboard cutout of his Face in a particularly unique state.

It became an instant internet hit, leading to appearances on the Today Show, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, ESPN ... you name it, The Face was on it.

And it changed Blankenship's life.

Then an engineering major, he was happy to live that life but he always had dreams of working in late-night television. His Face Guy media tour in New York planted that new seed complete with connections he wouldn't waste.

It led to an internship at The Tonight Show in 2014, then an internship at Saturday Night Live and eventually a full-time job at The Tonight Show. Alabama hoops was in the middle of coaching changes and general instability but its facially famous fan's career was blooming.

Blankenship said he "absolutely" owes the kickstart of his career to sitting in the front row of Coleman Coliseum holding a cutout of his snarled face.

Still with The Tonight Show, Blankenship has appeared several times alongside Jimmy Fallon. In 2017, he played the melodica with the nose of his famous Face.

His official title is footage research coordinator.

"It's funny because my job is to find viral videos, show them to Jimmy and the writers," Blankenship said. "So, in a sense, I'm finding the next me. And it feels weirdly poetic."

Former Major League outfielder from Alabama sentenced for sex crimes

By Mark Inabinett |

QuoteDustan Mohr was sentenced to nine years in prison on Friday after he pleaded guilty to three sex crimes involving the 13-year-old girl who just wanted to learn how to play softball.

In Allen Superior Court in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Judge Fran Gull sentenced the 47-year-old Mohr to five years for each offense – child solicitation for sexual intercourse, child seduction and sexual misconduct with a minor, WANE-TV in Fort Wayne reported. The sentence calls for Mohr to spend three years in prison consecutively on each count, then serve the remaining time on probation.

Mohr was arrested in August and charged with crimes alleged to have occurred from May 5 through June 19. Mohr had been hired to teach softball lessons to the 13-year-old.

Mohr hit .337 and led Alabama with 25 home runs and 79 RBIs in 1997, when the Crimson Tide was the No. 1 seed for the College World Series but lost to LSU 13-6 in the championship game. Mohr hit .305 with 10 home runs and 55 RBIs the previous season, when Alabama also was the No. 1 seed for the College World Series.

QuoteFormer Notre Dame and Alabama quarterback Tyler Buchner is returning to the Irish football team in a new role. Buchner is joining the program as a walk-on, he announced on Friday.

According to Horka, Buchner will be playing receiver for the Irish.

Buchner is re-joining the Notre Dame football program after recently helping the lacrosse program to a national championship. The Irish lacrosse team defeated Maryland 15-5 on Monday for their second consecutive national championship.

Buchner appeared in 10 games on the season, recording one assist.

Prior to playing lacrosse at Notre Dame, Tyler Buchner started his college career as a quarterback for the Irish. He signed with Notre Dame as a four-star recruit and the No. 93 overall player in the country in the class of 2021.

In 2022, Buchner missed most of the season with an injury, before transferring to Alabama. He saw a little bit of playing time for the Crimson Tide in 2023 (during the Saban is mad at Milroe game against USF), before transferring to Notre Dame and playing lacrosse.
