Bruce drops some names for you, and Frank Wilson is going to be on a lot of lists.

Even this would be a tone down from Hugh Freeze's over the top (sham) religious fervor.

I believe it will matter how the NCAA comes down on OM.  They come down hard and no big name is going to touch it.

No preseason "watch list" is as silly as the one for Coach of the Year.. Here are my best guesses at who may win it:  https://www.si.com/college-football/2017/08/04/coach-year-award-candidates-winners-jimbo-fisher

They'd have to keep him if he won, wouldn't they?

COACHING CAROUSEL CLIPS

Under normal circumstances, the Ole Miss job probably is a little better than most college football fans think

Under the present circumstances, however, it’s probably a worse job than its fans hope

Quote
Ever since Hugh Freeze resigned under pressure on July 20, opening up a job in the SEC West before the season even began, people around Ole Miss have been touting the idea Freeze’s $5 million annual salary essentially could be transferred to the next coach since the school did not have to pay him a buyout. And there’s no doubt that $5 million is a lot of money, even in a climate where every Power Five coach has a lucrative contract. Combined with top-level facilities and a nice quality of life in charming Oxford, Miss., it should be a good enough job to attract a hot coach on the rise if not a sitting Power Five coach looking for a change.

But that might not necessarily happen this time, because anyone who might think about taking the job knows there will be a handicap beyond whatever additional sanctions the NCAA hands down as a result of its massive infractions case that turned up 21 allegations (15 of the Level 1 variety). Simply put, the next coach at Ole Miss cannot cheat or even come particularly close to it, without having NCAA enforcement breathing down his neck.

Beyond the potential for the NCAA handing down another bowl ban or more scholarship losses and recruiting restrictions, Ole Miss’ probation going forward means it won’t be able to afford any more scandals for the foreseeable future and that nothing can be done in recruiting without a heavy hand from compliance. It will be cumbersome and annoying, and given the booster culture that surrounded Ole Miss in the Freeze era, it probably will hurt a lot of feelings.

In its hundreds of pages on the case, the NCAA paints a picture of a program where Freeze and his staff gave boosters tremendous access, to the point where they were meeting recruits in the football facility and communicating with them before signing day — a major NCAA no-no. A hotel owner was letting recruits stay for free on major game weekends. A car dealership was allowing the star player to keep loaners long past due. Coaches were directing recruits to an off-campus store, where they were allegedly receiving free merchandise (though the owner is disputing the claim in a much-publicized civil lawsuit).

Going forward, though, Ole Miss knows it will have to be vigilant about the appearance of coziness. This summer, according to documents obtained by USA TODAY Sports, it even terminated the contract of Harris Facility Management Company, a firm it had hired following the Alabama game in 2014 to beef up on-field security. Even though disassociated booster Lee Harris — the owner of a local bar who allegedly provided cash and free food to a recruit — doesn’t work for the Brandon, Miss., company owned by his father, that’s how far Ole Miss has to go now to avoid potential problems and conflicts of interest. And more is coming.

Athletics director Ross Bjork could not have been more clear about that during an Aug. 7 appearance on the Oxford Exxon Podcast, when he said: “Some of our booster culture needs to change, and I think we’re sending messages some of these things are unacceptable and we need to fix that.”

The next coach will have to create and maintain that distance, which is often easier said than done. But given the mountain of trouble Ole Miss is in right now, it’s a crucial part of the next coach’s job description. And that kind of thing isn’t for everyone.
