Title: 2017 Florida Football Head Coach Search
Post by: jbcarol on October 30, 2017, 05:00:04 am
Florida fired head football coach Jim McElwain on Sunday, a day after a 42-7 loss to Georgia and following a week of controversy regarding allegations of death threats.

Who might Florida pursue to be McElwain’s permanent replacement? The job is among the more attractive in college football, with a strong athletic department, a fertile recruiting ground and a rabid fan base.

Here are 12 coaches who could be on the Gators’ list:

Dan Mullen, Mississippi State head coach
With former Mississippi State athletics director Scott Stricklin now at Florida, Mullen is an obvious fit. He was Gators offensive coordinator under Urban Meyer from 2005-08, and has a knack for developing quarterbacks. The 45-year-old Mullen reportedly did not get along with ex-Florida AD Jeremy Foley.

Matt Campbell, Iowa State head coach
Campbell, 37, is the hottest young coach in college football

Justin Fuente, Virginia Tech head coach

Mike Norvell, Memphis head coach
Like Frost, Norvell is at the helm of one of the top teams in the American Athletic Conference

Charlie Strong, South Florida head coach

Strong, 57, has worked at Florida on four different occasions, including stints as defensive coordinator under both Ron Zook and Urban Meyer. However, his tenure at Texas was such a disaster that it’s hard to imagine him getting another big-time job just one year later.

Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State head coach

The mulleted offensive mastermind has built Oklahoma State into a perennial contender in the Big 12

Chip Kelly, former Oregon/NFL head coach

Kelly’s name will come up for every big-time opening until he actually takes one, but there’s been no indication he’s interested in returning to the college game

Bob Stoops, former Oklahoma head coach

Stoops swears he’s done with coaching after suddenly stepping down over the summer after 18 years at Oklahoma. Still, it would be irresponsible for Florida to not at least check to see if the former Florida defensive coordinator is interested

Willie Taggart, Oregon: A South Florida native who is like the third Harbaugh brother, Taggart won at Western Kentucky and then won at USF, leaving Charlie Strong a stocked program, and he's done a very nice job pumping life back into the Ducks in his first year in Eugene.

Gary Patterson, TCU: One of the best defensive coaches in football, Patterson has the Horned Frogs rolling.

Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M: His résumé and experience is better than most of the guys on this list.

UCF coach Scott Frost (-130)

It’s no surprise that Scott Frost leads the list. In essence, he’s the Tom Herman of this round of coaching changes.

Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen (+450)

The rest of the field

    FAU coach Lane Kiffin (+2,000)
Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy (+2,000)

The case for and against Chip Kelly as a candidate to take over at Florida

While UCF’s Scott Frost seems to be generating the most interest from fans in Florida’s week-old football coaching search, there are many who wonder how (and if) former Oregon and NFL coach Chip Kelly would fit at Florida.

Anybody who has watched college football over the last decade knows what Kelly, Frost’s former boss, did at Oregon and how fun those Ducks teams were offensively.

On pure offensive coaching acumen and record, Kelly’s credentials are almost as good as they get.

That said, there is another side to the debate.

It’s not totally clear how eager Kelly is to get back into the college ranks.

One aspect of this coaching search that will remain a positive regardless of who is named Florida’s coach is the way athletics director Scott Stricklin handled the masses with his social media prowess.

Steve Spurrier says the next head coach for the Florida Gators is currently with another team
(https://pbs.twimg.com/card_img/931176806681534465/lsUspO2E?format=jpg&name=600x314) (http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2017/11/steve_spurrier_says_next_flori.html)

"The (next UF) coach is with his team now," Spurrier told FootballScoop, via College Football Talk. "The coach we're going to hire is probably, I would almost 100 percent say is coaching his team today, this weekend, and through the end of the season, and maybe through the bowl game."

If Spurrier is right, that would take Kelly out of the mix.

Chip Kelly finally addresses Florida coaching rumors during ESPN SportsCenter appearance

Some important things to note here for those trying to read between the lines:

Chip Kelly did not deny interest in the  job.
Chip Kelly did not deny talking to Florida representatives. He simply said he was in New Hampshire when that plane flew to Connecticut.
There was a graphic on the screen with the Florida logo and the text “Any interest from Chip Kelly in Florida head coach opening?” beside it. That would indicate this was a planned question that Kelly knew was coming. And perhaps more importantly, was OK with them asking him on national TV.

It will be interesting to see this Kelly saga play out as Florida works toward a decision on Jim McElwain’s successor in Gainesville.

WATCH: Gators AD Scott Stricklin arrives at Ocala airport without Chip Kelly (https://twitter.com/Michael_Carvell/status/932468361786740736)

Quote
OCALA, Fla. — As social media buzzed about a chartered plane booked for a return flight from Portsmouth, N.H., to Ocala on Sunday night, about 10 Florida football fans and a few reporters lined up outside of a small airstrip to see if Chip Kelly was indeed on the plane.

Kelly, the former Oregon and NFL head coach rumored and reported to be the Gators’ top target for their coaching vacancy, was not part of the six-person travel party, but all of the major figures who would be involved in vetting and talking with a prospective hire deep into the process were present.

That included athletic director Scott Stricklin, President Kent Fuchs, executive associate AD for external affairs Mike Hill, executive associate AD for internal affairs Laird Veatch, executive associate AD for administration Lynda Tealer and senior associate AD for communications Steve McClain.
