Title: Played in a 4 man w a guy who...
Post by: golf2day on October 07, 2017, 07:44:42 am
Legit flies it 300+ and can play.

Iíve played with long knockers that are wild, Iíve followed Brandt Snedeker around while he was on the old Nationwide tour, and Iíve played with Richard Johnson (the old pro at Greystone that was on tour), but this dude blew me away.

It was the two of us and two guys playing the old man tees, so I was hitting first off the tee all day. Canít lie, the thought in the back of my mind before I pulled the trigger was ďwhatís the point of this swing? Hurry up so you can watch that dude hit the ball again!Ē.

Guys that can hit it like that are freaking impressive. Swing looks like he was born with a club in his hands.

Super nice guy, too, name is Mitch Beaver. Iím sure some of you know him or his dad.

If you get a chance to play with him or just watch him play itís worth the time.

No lie. I fly it 250-260 when I hit it perfect and dude was hitting it places Iíve never even thought about. Insane, but he did it over and over again.

You know him?

I played with a guy like that a couple of weeks ago. He was probably about 23 years old and weighed about 160. Every time he hit the ball we should stood and looked at it like, holy darn! Par 3 150 yards, I'm pulling a 6 or 7, this kid pulls a pitching wedge and hits it a mile high and straight. On a 360 yard par 4 he drove the darned green. He couldn't putt for darn, though :)

Yeah, the last horse is just now crossing the finish line. I missed that one.

This guys probably 6í 1-2Ē.

I know what you mean about the iron shots, though. We started on 6 at Greystoneís front course. Flag was back, 8-10 mph wind in our face. I lasered it at 184 or 185. I hit 4i hoping it would be middle of the green and everybody else could go after it. Dude hits some towering draw that ended up on the back fringe. Swear I saw 7 on the bottom of his club as he was putting it in his bag.

Some people just play a different game than me.

Mitch is a great guy. He was at Southern Oaks when I was a member there. He and I are lefties and he really helped my game a lot.

Randy. But I get your joke. He was the pro out a Rolling Hills. Passed away maybe 5 years ago now?

I was out at Southern Oaks for a bit while Mitch was out there.  Definitely a good guy and a heckuva player.

Played in a 4 man with a kid that was a Sr. in high school one time that was the same way. Can't remember the kids name, but he went on to play college golf somewhere and I heard he was playing professionally now on some small tours. It was amazing.

I love threads like this.  Listening to some people you would think that pros are some mythical creatures.  They are in most things, but when it comes to distance there are some everyday Joes that can just flat out bomb it.  I work with a guy that hits it as far as the longest PGA golfer.  He is 6'3" 265lbs.  Played golf in college and now power lifts.  I've tried to get him to take a shot at long drive, but he won't.

Would love to see an exhibition with the longest PGA guys and the long drive guys.

Speaking of Long Drive, I think former champion Jamie Sadlowski was trying the PGA Tour and played in the season opener. Silverado Classic.

I'll have to look up how well he did.

There is definitely a different skill level for the PGA pros versus long knockers. They can play well, but the touch around the greens and wedge game is so vital to scoring well. I also noticed this when volunteering at some Web.Com events. Every guy out there...every single one...could kill it. But the difference was so obvious around the greens. Not all of them had short games to match. I saw a guy reach a 650-yard par-5 in two...then three putt. Sure, it's just one hole, anyone can do that. But after watching this guy all 18 holes, it seemed apparent what was holding him back.

The guys who have both long and short game are on the PGA Tour. If you have long game but no short game, you'll be in the minor leagues. If you have short game and reasonable long game(275+), you can still play major leagues. David Toms is a good example.

What if you have the short game but no long game (-250)?  :)

I don't see any way a guy averaging 250 off the tee can stay very long on any of the professional tours. Unless his short game was one of the best in the world.

Jordan Spieth, who has a great short game, is always described as a shorter hitter. But he routinely hits drives over 300 yards. Like in the playoff in the Barclays against Dustin Johnson, people were agape over DJ's drive cutting the corner right over the lake...to about 360 yards. But Spieth's drive was 315 itself, they listed. ONLY 315 yards. Man, what a short hitter.

Seriously, that's really impressive. Anybody that hits 275+ consistently straight amazes me.

Son has done a lot of things to remember. He once in a scramble hit his drive on a par5 375 Yds . Then he hit a six iron on the green 6' past pin and backed it up into the hole for a double eagle.

Once hit a drive 419 on par 5 and was 110 yards from green. He hit a wedge over the green and made par. That's golf

It just amazes me to go to a PGA tour event and watch those guys hammer their drives down the fairway 290-330 yards, mostly in the fairway, I'm so jealous......

One of my playing partners gets on #15 at Sage Meadows in 2 pretty regular. A strait par 5 that plays about 550 from the blues. Its pretty impressive to see.

I hate that hole, I don't play there but on a few Mondays with my youngest, JHS golfer. Anyway, he always plays the back tees, so I play there too, I'm usually about a 7-8 iron out after two, lol.

#15......is that the hole that has woods all down the right hand side, houses to the left of the fairway and a small creek just short of the green. Fairway running slightly downhill from the tee box to the green? I have played SM a few times but it has been a couple years since the last time.

The kid I was talking about in post #14 of this thread did the same thing. That was where the scramble I played with him was. I can hit driver, 3w, wedge on that hole and he put it on in 2.

There's a row of houses that come into play it you're playing from the back tee and hit a nice push/slice from the get go.

You're doing it wrong.  I just use it like a tripod.  Helps with weight transfer.  Now I never hit a snap hook.
