AM | 2016 NSD is over. We're looking to 2017: Dylan Moses' exodus leaves La 'weak,' especially compared to 16 http://bit.ly/1KrrEjJ

Quote
Dylan Moses’ tweet a few weeks ago made it official: Louisiana lost its top-ranked college prospect for the 2017 class.

“Just touchdown in Florida!!!” the Jan. 16 message read.

The former University High star and ex-LSU commitment had arrived at his new home: IMG Academy, a boarding school specializing in the academic tutoring and athletic training of college-bound stars.

That move has put a damper on the Bayou State’s 2017 recruiting class.

“If Dylan Moses is still at U-High,” said Sonny Shipp, Louisiana recruiting analyst for 247Sports, “people aren’t saying Louisiana is weak in 2017.”

Moses’ departure — and earlier decommitment from LSU — throws the Tigers’ 2017 recruiting class into some murky waters. The talent pool in the state isn’t as deep as 2016, and it’s not as top-heavy as the loaded 2014 group.

Losing recruiting coordinator Frank Wilson only makes things more uncertain.

4-star athlete includes LSU in his top four http://sec.news/1R8iDh7

Tyreke Johnson kicked off the opening day of the 2017 recruiting season in a big way.

The Jacksonville, Fla., native, rated four-star athlete and the nation’s top safety by 247Sports, includes LSU in his top four, which also featured Stanford, UCLA and Notre Dame.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound athlete from Trinity Christian Academy has reported 20 offers at this stage in his recruitment. Johnson is a U.S. Army Bowl All-American Game commitment.

Recapping LSU's national signing day http://es.pn/23WUwHo

Quote
Biggest remaining question mark: After losing ESPN 300 quarterback Feleipe' Franks late in the recruiting cycle, LSU struggled to find a quarterback to replace him in the class before finally offering a scholarship to Louisiana’s Mr. Football, Lindsey Scott Jr., just before signing day.

Scott posted huge numbers and led his team to a state championship as a senior, but he is a three-star prospect whose 5-foot-11 size creates plenty of skepticism about whether he can become an impact player in the SEC. But in addition to his dual-threat abilities, Scott seems to be highly intelligent and a hard worker. He will certainly be an intriguing player to watch over the next few years. It would be asking a lot to expect him to stabilize a position that has been problematic throughout the Miles era, though.

AM | #LSU expects 40 prospects at its first of 2 junior days, where offers go out and, sometimes, commits are made http://bit.ly/1Q9YbXY

Quote
About 40 players are expected at LSU’s junior day event Saturday dubbed “Boys From The Boot,” a day-long, invitation-only affair for Louisiana-only 2017 recruits. These current high school juniors from around the state meet with LSU coaches, tour campus and — this time around — catch a men’s basketball game at the PMAC.

In many ways, “Boys From The Boot” is the unofficial kickoff to the 2017 recruiting calendar, the first big step in building next year’s signing class. Step 2 is next weekend, when the school is set to host a junior day for any 2017 prospects.

A host of scholarship offers are normally delivered at these events, and often prospects make commitments in emotional meetings in coach Les Miles’ office or days later. For example, Saivion Smith, a defensive back from Florida and one of the headliners to the 2016 class, committed three days after his trip to LSU’s junior day last February.

The man approached as Paul and his son — 6-foot-7, 300-pound Justin —

Zoloty returned several minutes later, rushing up to Paul just before the Hendersons left New Orleans.

“He said, ‘Look, I’ve been watching your son, and he’s got all of the tools and I want to tell you about this school in Florida,’ ” Paul Henderson remembered.

Four months later, Justin Henderson moved into dormitories on the plush, 500-acre campus of IMG Academy, about 45 miles south of Tampa.

Henderson spent just a year at IMG, having played his sophomore season there before returning to Denham Springs High School in the summer. The towering offensive lineman missed his family, friends and community too much, Paul said.

Four-star defensive end Bryan Jones was scheduled to attend Texas’ Junior Day all week.

Then, Les Miles came calling.

After getting word from members of the LSU coaching staff that Miles wanted to meet with Jones’ family at the Tigers’ second junior camp event of the month on Friday morning, the standout pass-rusher quickly adjusted his schedule. (https://www.seccountry.com/louisiana-state/4-star-de-opts-to-spurn-texas-make-second-visit-to-lsu-instead)

Quote
“I talked to coach Cam (Cameron) and coach O (Ed Orgeron) on Friday morning, and they told me that coach Miles wanted to meet with me and my family,” Jones told SEC Country.

“It was an honor to hear that one of the best coaches in the game of football wanted to meet with me and my family.”

That wasn’t the only message Miles imparted over the weekend.

After Orgeron and Cameron raved about the 6-foot-5, 240-pound defensive lineman during the “Boys From The Boot” camp earlier in February, Jones was taken aback by what LSU’s head coach had to say upon their first face-to-face meeting.

“He said I have some great grandparents who keep me on track, and they were telling him (Miles) how good of a kid I was,” Jones recalled. “We really just talked about football and family and life after football, as well as developing a relationship with my grandparents and that he cares about me.

“It’s letting me know that he cares about me — not only on the field but off the field, too. He’s developing a relationship that isn’t just about football.”

Ed Orgeron to be new recruiting coordinator, source says (http://theadvocate.com/sports/lsu/15092378-128/lsu-cam-cameron-agree-to-new-deal-ed-orgeron-named-recruiting-coordinator)

Quote
Defensive line coach Ed Orgeron is set to be LSU’s new recruiting coordinator...

Orgeron, the Louisiana native who recently completed his first season with the Tigers, will receive a raise and extension with his new title. Orgeron’s old two-year deal expired next March and paid him $450,000...

Tigers have been without a recruiting coordinator since Frank Wilson left Jan. 15 to be the head coach at Texas-San Antonio.

Orgeron, 54, served as recruiting coordinator during two stints at Southern Cal, and he’s known nationwide as one of the most aggressive and successful recruiters. His first three signing classes in his second stint as recruiting coordinator at Southern Cal — 2010-2013 — ranked third twice and ninth nationally, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings.

Teams have pursued Orgeron heavily since the Trojans passed on him as their head coach in 2013. The Larose native and former Northwestern State defensive lineman did not coach in 2014 before landing what he calls his dream job at LSU in 2015. As recently as January, Mississippi State pursued the coach for its opening at defensive coordinator.

According to Lewis’ timeline, recovery should take up to three months.

The four-star prospect played both quarterback and defensive back at Wossman High School (Monroe, La.), but projects as a safety at the next level. The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder is one of two safeties embedded in LSU’s incoming signing class, and was rated the 13th-best safety among all 2016 recruits.

LSU coach Les Miles explains Devin White’s switch to linebacker http://sec.news/1R1HvCh

Quote
When LSU nabbed a commitment from the nation’s No. 5 running back, the Tigers thought they were adding another weapon to an already-explosive backfield.

Think again.

Devin White, Louisiana’s No. 7 prospect in the Class of 2016 and an early enrollee for the Tigers, lined up at linebacker in his first LSU practice on Monday.

Simply put, the LSU coaches felt that’s where White was needed, coach Les Miles explained.

“We went around the room and voted, and he (White) texted (me and) said he thought he could get on (the) field quicker at linebacker,” Miles recalled

White joins fellow freshman Michael Divinity as a true freshman competing for a starting role this spring...

Quote
LSU listed White as a running back on national signing day, but he and the coaching staff decided that inside linebacker was a better fit -- apparently well before Monday’s practice.

"[The coaches] went around the room, we voted, we talked about his skills. We talked about his lower-body skills and his upper-body skills and we talked about his contact," Miles said. "And really to be honest with you, he texted me and he said, 'Hey listen, I was thinking maybe if I played linebacker I could get on the field sooner.' I said, 'That might be true.' And so what we did is we gave him an opportunity, and I think he’s doing really a lot with it."

Basically, I saw my mom was sick and I had the opportunity to go back and forth, and it really hit me to go to LSU.”

Keytaon Thompson might be committed to an SEC West rival, but the nation’s No. 9 dual-threat quarterback has not stopped receiving interest from other programs, including LSU (https://www.seccountry.com/louisiana-state/lsu-recruiting-recap-tigers-not-done-with-qb-committed-to-rival-school)

Quote
Thompson indicated to SEC Country that LSU has come on the strongest since his pledge to the Bulldogs.

“I still have great relationships with Coach Cam (Cameron) and Coach (Les) Miles up there,” Thompson said. “We can still talk about everything, and if I need anything I can still talk to them. I had a talk with Coach Cam and he let me know how everything is going, his plans and things like that. He reassured me that (LSU) is still recruiting me and going to continue to recruit me until signing day.”

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound New Orleans native has a longstanding relationship with first-year Tigers running backs coach Jabbar Juluke, who he believes is a great hire for LSU.

Thompson hopes to see LSU open up its offense, which he believes will help with recruiting and perhaps with his own decision. Coaches have clued the quarterback in on the transition since last summer.

For now, the Landry-Walker High School (New Orleans) product remains a hard Mississippi State commit.

St. Stanislaus 2017 quarterback verbally committed Saturday to LSU on the same day he received the offer. Brennan, the top-rated pro-style quarterback prospect in Mississippi, has more than 15 offers to play at the next level.

MB: I went to Oklahoma State and thought that, you know, since they do the spread and that’s what I do that it’d be good and I was excited about that and was excited to go up there. A week after I went up to that visit, they had a 2017 quarterback commit so I called the coach and asked how many quarterbacks they were taking and he said they were only taking one. So I thought, ‘Well, that’s that.’ It was a little disappointing, but I sat down with my parents and we said that everything happens for a reason. I had to stay positive and keep moving forward.

TCL: And then LSU happens?

MB: Then this past Wednesday, [LSU offensive coordinator Cam Cameron] messaged me on Twitter when I was in class and asked me to give him a call because he was on the way to our school. I quickly ran into my coach’s office and gave him a call. He got there, brought his iPad and we just did a little workout that we usually do. He filmed it all and sent it to [LSU head coach Les Miles]. On Thursday coach Cameron told me that if he could offer me right then, he would because he wants me to be the 2017 quarterback for LSU, but it obviously has to go to coach Miles. Then he called me later and asked if there was any way I can go there Saturday so I told him that I would.

TCL:What goes through your mind on that trip?

MB: The whole ride over there, I didn’t want to get my hopes up because I didn’t know if I was going to get an offer or not, but at the same time, I knew if they were going to offer, I was going to go ahead and pull the trigger.

Quote
When Myles Brennan made the short trip to Baton Rouge last weekend with his parents, Owen and Megan, and St. Stanislaus coach Bill Conides, he was hopeful but not expectant.

The Rockachaws quarterback had visited Oklahoma State earlier in the month to see what the Cowboys were all about but didn't return to Bay St. Louis with his 16th offer.

This trip went much differently.

LSU offensive coordinator Cam Cameron had visited St. Stanislaus earlier in the week and came away so impressed he wasted no time setting up an "all-about-you day" for Brennan and his family on LSU's campus.

On the drive over, Brennan tried to stay on an even keel.

"I didn't want to get my hopes up. This recruiting process, as I have learned, can be tricky, stressful and overwhelming," he said.

"I didn't want to get my hopes up and maybe not get offered and then go home disappointed."

About 20 minutes into the 2 1/2-hour conversation, Miles cut the chit-chat and got down to business.

After raving about what Brennan had already accomplished at SSC -- the video game passing numbers, his poise in the pocket and accuracy -- Miles offered the 6-foot-4, 180-pound quarterback.

When it got to the point where the two sides said their goodbyes, Brennan acted.

"I just said, 'Coach, I want to go ahead and shake your hand and tell you I'm going to go ahead and commit,'" he said. "At that time, he just started screaming and tears started coming out of his eyes. He gave me a big ol' hug. My parents started tearing up and crying because they didn't know it was coming.

"No one knew it was happening. It just came out. It just felt like it was time."

How's the fit?

Prior to committing, Brennan had a couple of questions for Miles like most outsiders have probably wondered since hearing about the fit.

How does a QB who has thrown for more than 11,000 yards and 117 touchdowns in two seasons mesh with a program that loves to pound the rock?

Our nation’s No. 17 cornerback has already done his homework on the Tigers... (https://www.seccountry.com/louisiana-state/sec-legacy-on-lsu-offer-theyre-easy-multimillionaire-dbs)

5-foot-11, 170-pound prospect out of the Lone Star State finally reeled in the offer from LSU defensive backs coach Corey Raymond...

“It means a lot,” Vincent told SEC Country of the offer,” and I definitely have a lot of interest. The athletes that they develop … (they’re) easy multimillionaire defensive backs. They’re guys who have worked and have been developed, and now they’re being paid at the highest level for what they do.”

Multimillionaire defensive backs? That’s a whole new twist on “DBU.”

Vincent, a four-star cornerback out of Memorial High School (Port Arthur, Texas), believes he fits the criteria.

The Tigers were his 26th reported offer and his eighth from an SEC power.

Vincent has strong ties to the LSU football program already.

Class of 2016 LSU safety signee Eric Monroe and LSU’s top safety target in the Class of 2017 Grant Delpit are among some of Vincent’s closest friends and colleagues in the Texas 7-on-7 circuit.

Within a span of four days, LSU added five commitments to its 2017 class. On Tuesday afternoon, offensive guard Saahdiq Charles of Madison Ridgeland Academy in Jackson, Miss., became the latest to "pull the trigger."

Charles, at 6-foot-5, 315-pounds, is originally from New Orleans but was displaced by Hurricane Katrina. He calls Louisiana home, so LSU was the clear choice.

"I grew up a fan of LSU, plus the relationship with me and Coach (Jeff) Grimes," Charles cited as his main reasons for selecting the Tigers over Mississippi State and others.

Charles received an offer from LSU in early April

Catholic-Baton Rouge defensive end Aaron Moffitt, the son of LSU strength and conditioning coach Tommy Moffitt, joins Texas offensive lineman Austin Deculus, junior college wide receiver Stephen Guidry and Georgia fullback Tory Carter as new commitments to the program in the past few days.

When asked about being the fifth commitment in the last few days, Charles said: "We're going to be a great class and even more (commitments) to come!"

"I'm going to shut it down after the commitment," he told NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune last week. "I'm ready for it to be over with and focus on being the best I can be for my senior year."

Charles selected LSU over Mississippi State in a decision that came down to the wire.

“I’d say last week when I actually committed to them,” Charles said of his thought process. “It was just the great relationship I had with Coach Grimes and the class we have coming in. It’s going to be special.”

BOSSIER CITY, La. – Former Edna Karr defensive end and LSU signee Andre Anthony is not expected to report with other freshmen this week for summer classes, a source confirmed to The Advocate on Thursday.

Anthony joins St. Thomas Aquinas defensive tackle Edwin Alexander as players who won’t be moving in over the weekend and beginning classes Monday. Alexander, the eighth-ranked defensive end in the 2016 class who’s expected to play nose tackle, will work this summer to reach eligibility. The staff expects him to qualify by August.

Anthony’s situation is different than that of Alexander. It involves a hangup with the NCAA clearinghouse.

The NCAA is requesting Anthony produce coursework from his year and a half spent at Miller McCoy Academy in New Orleans. Miller McCoy shut down last year, and acquiring the coursework has been difficult, the source said. It’s unclear when or if the NCAA will clear Anthony, the 15th-ranked weak-side defensive end in the 2016 class.

HOUSTON — Mannie Netherly has had to re-evaluate his options since de-committing from Texas A&M just more than a month ago.

LSU is one of the schools the 4-star Texas wide receiver is oft-connected to.

6-foot-2, 183-pound prospect included LSU in his top six this past weekend along with Alabama, Auburn, Florida and Texas A&M, among others, largely because of his relationship with the school.

“They made me feel like I was at home every time I came up there,” Netherly told SEC Country on Tuesday at LSU’s satellite camp at North Shore High School (Houston).

“When I’m there, I get a feeling that this could be a possible place for me. I have family in Louisiana, close to Baton Rouge, so going up there I get to see family and my family can see me, and I know it’s not going to be a problem so it’s like home.”

"Suber" is portmanteau of "super" and "uber"

Quote
Derek Stingley said his son gave him the best Father's Day present this year — Derek Jr., only 14, earned a football scholarship to LSU and committed to the Tigers. On Sunday, the dad will do as he always does on Father's Day and reflect on his own dad, a man who passed away nine years ago and was the first to note Derek Jr.'s athletic gifts.

Darryl Stingley was a first-round draft pick of the New England Patriots in 1973 out of Purdue. He was a budding star receiver whose life took a tragic turn on Aug. 12, 1978 in a preseason game against the Raiders in Oakland.

"It" was a horrific collision between his dad, stretching for a pass over the middle in the red zone, and Oakland safety Jack Tatum. Darryl Stingley lay motionless on the field while trainers raced to attend to him. The hit was deemed legal by refs, but it left Stingley with two broken vertebrae and paralyzed him front the chest down. It is as gruesome as any play in NFL history.

"He's laying in the bed, and I said 'Dad, get up! Dad, get up!' He never moved. I said to myself, 'Wow.'" The youngster, though, still didn't accept his father's prognosis. He would massage his dad's arms and flex his fingers. "I was basically doing therapy on him all night thinking something is gonna trigger," Derek said.

But it never did.

Derek said he and his father spoke about that specific exchange only once. "He told me 'That was the hardest moment in my life because I couldn't sit up for my baby boy,'" Derek said.

"My dad was my biggest fan," said Derek, who stopped playing in 2004 and has been coaching for the past decade.

In 2007, Darryl passed away in his sleep at age 55. An autopsy determined that contributing factors were bronchial pneumonia, quadriplegia, spinal cord injury and hardening of the arteries.

Darryl's grandson Derek Jr. said he remembers his grandmother showing him the video of the hit that left his grandfather paralyzed when he was 5 or 6.

"They said he'd only live two or three more years but he ended up living 30 years longer," she told him. "He had such a strong heart."

Derek Jr. created some buzz this month in the football recruiting world. The 6-foot, 170-pound cornerback in the Class of 2019 wowed the LSU staff at a satellite camp in New Orleans.

Folks at The Dunham School in Baton Rouge, where the Stingleys live, call Derek Jr. "Little Sting." They rave about how mature Derek Jr. is. Neil Weiner, the head coach of the football team, said Derek Jr. makes one big play after another, picking off five passes last season and returning a couple of kicks for touchdowns. The kid isn't one to do much celebrating. He does everything for the team, even snapping on punts, and is a sprinter on the track team. He also has a 3.8 GPA.

The Tigers continue to roll on the recruiting trail, with the latest addition to the group coming by way of IMG Academy wide receiver Jhamon Ausbon, as announced via Twitter Saturday evening.

The physical, 6-feet-2, 215-pounder selected LSU over Texas A&M, following an unofficial visit last weekend.

Ausbon becomes the second four-star wide receiver commitment in as many days, after Texas standout Mannie Netherly made his public declaration late Friday evening.

The Tigers made their move on Ausbon during the Spring evaluation period, but have been in contact for some time. His recruitment was initially led by Bradley Dale Peveto, who was his area recruiter prior to his transfer to IMG Academy, and got a big boost from first year LSU wide receiver coach Dameyune Craig. Ausbon took a visit to Baton Rouge last weekend to spend some time on LSU's campus and came away extremely impressed.

It didn't hurt the Tigers' cause that he has family in the Baton Rouge area, either. Following his visit, Ausbon told the LSU staff everything they needed to hear for them to feel confident they were on the verge of landing the dynamic playmaker. Ausbon announced a top four earlier in June, which included LSU, Texas A&M, Auburn and Michigan.

The Tigers now have 14 public, verbal commitments under their belt for the 2017 class. Ausbon also gives the Tigers yet another top wide receiver haul in once again, following arguably the top receiver class in the country just a year prior in 2016.

In what may be the biggest recruiting news for LSU this year, Tennessee safety prospect JaCoby Stevens announced his re-commitment to the LSU program Monday afternoon.

Stevens, who committed to LSU in September of last year, picked the Tigers over Alabama, had overtures from most of the nation's premier programs, but ultimately decided to follow his dreams of suiting up in purple and gold.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder seemed all but moved on from his initial commitment to Les Miles and staff, before a strong push by LSU in the final hours, led by assistant athletic director and director of player personnel Austin Thomas, with assistance from LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda and defensive backs coach Corey Raymond.

Stevens joins another premier safety in IMG Academy's Grant Delpit as the Tigers' two commitments at the position in the 2017 class--a position that was a major need heading into the recruiting cycle. The Tigers are set to lose Rickey Jefferson as a graduate following the 2016 season, with most believing that junior Jamal Adams will vault early for the NFL Draft after the season is completed.

Coming into the recruiting cycle the Tigers' staff hoped to land three safeties in the 2017 class, but with LSU currently sitting at 19 public commitments and a few others close to making public declarations, reaching that number could be difficult.

The most obvious choice as the third safety is Plaquemine safety Todd Harris, who has LSU in his top three along with Ole Miss and Alabama. Another name to watch is Thibodaux's Amik Robertson, who is viewed as a hybrid defensive back by the LSU staff, and is still receiving a lot of attention from area recruiter Ed Orgeron.

LSU DT Travonte Valentine reports to camp

August 08, 2016 at 3:38 PM, updated August 08, 2016 at 5:23 PM

Defensive tackle Travonte Valentine reported to LSU's camp Monday, having gained eligibility after a summer of taking classes, effective immediately, according to Valentine and multiple sources at LSU.

The completion of four summer courses -- two earlier and two more recently -- with satisfactory grades means he can be reinstated to the program. Valentine is expected to anchor new defensive coordinator Dave Aranda's defensive line.

The LSU compliance office was diligent in making sure every hurdle was successfully cleared prior to bringing Valentine in to join the team. Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College turned his completed coursework over to LSU last week, clearly the biggest hurdle of them all. Valentine's progress was closely monitored by the Tigers' staff over the last six months, with Les Miles and athletic director Joe Alleva signing off on the addition, according to a source.

Valentine initially signed with LSU in 2014 and was made academically eligible to play his freshman year, before the SEC overruled the collegiate athletics governing body, forcing the promising defensive tackle to miss his freshman season. A short time later he was removed from the LSU program for a violation of team rules, ultimately landing at Arizona Western College before enrolling at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

Which is it?

Officially, about one-fifth of LSU’s 2017 commitments hail from the Lone Star State. But in reality, it’s about one-third of the 19-member class. (https://www.seccountry.com/lsu/lsu-enjoying-success-in-the-lone-star-state)

Quote
Delpit committed to LSU last month over Auburn and Florida. Vincent did the same, and Ausbon selected the Tigers ahead of Texas A&M.

All three elite Texans considered Texas A&M. Both Vincent and Ausbon included the Aggies in their final list of schools. Ausbon, a one-time Baylor pledge, continues to hear from the A&M coaching staff as the fall approaches.

Neither of the 4-star prospects included Texas in their final group, though. Delpit believes the in-state Big-12 power is on the rise but isn’t ready to challenge for a national championship like the Tigers.

LSU has been able to attract Texas’ best like Vincent and Ausbon, as well 5-stars such as Deculus and highly regarded 4-stars such as Ingram and Netherly because of how close it seems the program is not winning a championship as early as 2016 and the years to follow.

“I feel that if Texas were LSU, then people would stay in Texas,” he said.

Overall, of LSU’s 19 public pledges, 13 are from out of the state. Naturally, a majority of the 13 out-of-state commits have ties to The Boot, but currently compete elsewhere.

LSU could add upwards of 27 commits before Feb. 1, 2017.

http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2016/08/spanish_fort_standout_justin_t.html#incart_river_index

Spanish Fort star defensive lineman Justin Thomas said all along he wanted to blaze his own trail and not necessarily follow in the footsteps of his stepfather, former Alabama standout Atlas Herrion.

He followed through on that vow Saturday, committing to Les Miles and the LSU Tigers. Thomas talked to LSU assistant coaches Dameyune Craig and Ed Orgeron on Saturday as well as Miles.

"I'm fine with it," said Herrion, an assistant coach at Spanish Fort. "I'm totally fine with it. LSU fits Justin. The style of defense they play is really perfect for him. It's close to the style we play at Spanish Fort. It's a 3-4 scheme and they attack. This is perfect for Justin and it is not too far from home."

RELATED: THOMAS WANTS TO MAKE NAME FOR HIMSELF

The 6-foot-5, 260-pound Thomas has been one of the state's quickest rising recruits since helping the Toros to a 15-0 record and the Class 6A state title in 2015. He finished his junior season with 55 tackles and 11 sacks on his way to becoming a first-team All-State and All-Coastal Alabama selection.

He is No. 13 on AL.com's 2017 A-List, a ranking of the top senior prospects in the state. Thomas is planning to graduate in December and report to LSU in January. Also a standout basketball player for the Toros, he will skip his senior season in that sport to concentrate on his football future.

"I like whatever fit he feels comfortable with," Spanish Fort coach Ben Blackmon said. "I think he's a good football player, and he will make his way wherever he chooses. I'm glad he's settled in on what he wants to do, and I'm glad he can put it behind him and go play football."

Thomas is the second top defensive line recruit on the Coast to commit to LSU this summer. Murphy's Neil Farrell also has decided play for the Tigers. Verbal commitments are non-binding.

In addition to Alabama and LSU, Thomas had multiple national offers, including Nebraska, South Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, Troy and Arkansas.

"I think the sky is limit for him," Blackmon said of Thomas. "I think he will just continue to get better and better. He will eventually turn into a really good football player at LSU. He's a good kid, a high-character kid and he is a great athlete. That is a winning combination."

Spanish Fort, ranked No. 1 in the ASWA Class 6A preseason poll, opens the season at Class 7A No. 1 McGill-Toolen on Friday.

In a game for his high school team, LSU 2017 QB commit Lowell Narcisse went down with a left knee injury. He had to be helped off the field and was being looked at on the sideline. For MSU, Guidry is a vital piece. Guidry would be the final addition at wide receiver for the Bulldogs’ 2017 class, according to multiple team sources. His length, speed and ability to stretch the field appeal to the Bulldogs. The Louisiana native is 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds.

Guidry is ranked as the No. 14 overall JUCO prospect in the nation by the 247Sports Composite. He also has offers from Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina.

"LSU is a (g)reat school and I have much love and respect for the program, but I feel this is the best decision for myself right now," Narcisse tweeted Monday, also saying he has "thought and (p)rayed long about the situation."

Narcisse becomes the second highly ranked LSU quarterback to do so since Ed Orgeron was named head coach.

Narcisse tore the ACL in his left knee, one season after tearing the ACL in his right knee.

Auburn had an in-home visit with Narcisse on Sunday.

After offer, LSU among finalists for JUCO WR Stephen Guidry

https://www.seccountry.com/lsu/lsu-recruiting-2017-class-snapshot-commits

This player has been generating recruiting updates for years.

Quote
Guidry de-committed in October, just days after Les Miles was fired. However, that was only part of the equation.

Guidry had to sort out his grades at Hinds.

Guidry named Mississippi State and Arizona State as his two finalists, but the late overture from LSU has put the Tigers right back in the thick of the race.

LSU is courting top in-state receivers DeVonta Smith and Racey McMath, both of whom will officially visit next month. However, with Jazz Ferguson joining the long list of wide receivers to transfer out of LSU since the offseason, the Tigers are hoping to reel in at least three and ideally four wide receivers in their 2017 class.

Consider Guidry, Smith and McMath priority targets at the position along with 4-star signee Mannie Netherly.

Stevens and Delpit are the Nos. 1 and 10-ranked safeties in the class, respectively. Vincent is the No. 13 cornerback, and all three rank among the top 120 prospects overall.

More important than rankings and stars is the understanding of LSU’s “DBU” tradition. It’s why all three Under Armour All-Americans committed to the Tigers and to Raymond —

LSU's recruiting focus for 2018? Louisiana's best talent, nation's top running backs  (http://www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/sports/lsu/article_2b229286-ea6c-11e6-9181-d73e4f468aaa.html)

Quote
All eyes now move to 2018, a year in which the state is expected to produce its usual share of top-flight talent, especially at one specific position.

“One thing that jumps off is receivers,” said Shea Dixon, recruiting reporter for Geaux247, a site covering LSU. “They’ve got a commit from (receiver) Kenan Jones. He was one of the best at the Army All-American combine (in January) and right now he’s just the fourth-best in the state.”

The state is loaded at its typical skill position spots — receivers and defensive backs.

Six of the top nine players in the state for 2018 play at one of those positions, including the top three prospects, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. That includes Bossier City Parkway QB Justin Rogers’ teammate, receiver Terrace Marshal, the top-ranked player in the state, per 247Sports’ rankings. Scotlandville cornerback Kelvin Joseph, an LSU commitment, is ranked second.

Both are the state’s current composite five-star players. They are not running backs.

Running back replaces inside linebacker as LSU’s new position of need.

Coach Ed Orgeron and staff will have to venture out of state to solve the issue, as they did in 2017 at inside linebacker with additions of Georgia’s Tyler Taylor and Tennessee’s Jacob Phillips.

There isn’t a running back among 247Sports’ top 25 Louisiana prospects. Scotlandville running back Trenton Charles is the No. 12 prospect in the state, according to Rivals.com. He does not hold an LSU offer.

“You’re missing that national running back,” said Mike Scarborough, publisher of TigerBait.com, the Rivals.com site covering LSU. “Where’s the next great Louisiana national running back? We’re looking at a stretch here that I haven’t seen before.

“You look at the running back spot,” Scarborough continued. “Who’s the high-caliber running back for 2018 in Louisiana? By now, he should be a household name.”

LSU is on a recent run of Louisiana running backs: Alfred Blue, Kenny Hilliard, Jeremy Hill, Leonard Fournette and now Derrius Guice. The Tigers will be thin at the position after this year, though.

Justin Rogers is Louisiana’s top quarterback for 2018 and one of the premier dual-threat prospects in the country. LSU will make a strong push for him, but likely will follow the blueprint from 2017 and try to add a pro-style passer as well.

Cornerback will be a major emphasis in the 2018 recruiting class. The Tigers hold a commitment from Kelvin Joseph, but are very much in the mix for 5-star Anthony Cook, 5-star Pat Surtain Jr. and 4-star Jalen Green. Additionally, prospects such as Verone McKinley III and Trent Gordon remain on the team’s radar...

AJ Carter, the state’s top running back, was offered by LSU coach Ed Orgeron during the elite high school camp this week. As a result, Carter de-committed from UCLA and instead has committed to LSU.

Carter, a 3-star running back from Many (La.) High School, is the third running back to commit to LSU in the past week.

...No. 22 member of LSU’s 2018 recruiting class, which entered the day ranked No. 3 in the country and No. 1 in the SEC.

Pontotoc's Cole Smith is a Dandy Dozen offensive lineman who blocks hard downfield

Smith is a LSU commit who plays with a mean streak. More on why he was chosen: (http://www.clarionledger.com/story/sports/high-school/2017/07/07/meet-third-member-2017-dandy-dozen/458042001)

Football is a family sport in the Smith household, with a patriarch, Brent, who played nine years as an offensive lineman in the NFL after a college career at Mississippi State it's easy to understand why.

It'd also be easy to assume Brent's son Cole, who now stands at 6-foot-4 and weighs in at 275 pounds, was a natural on the gridiron. Don't misunderstand: Smith is a physically gifted elite football talent —

Smith is committed to LSU but has 10 other Division I offers, including from Mississippi State

LSU commitment Jaray Jenkins suffers fractured tibia

enkins, a 3-star wide receiver and longtime LSU commitment, suffered a fractured tibia during his season opener on Saturday and is going to be sidelined for a few weeks, Jena (La.) High School football coach Jay Roark told SEC Country.

6-foot-2, 185-pounder will be able to return to the field sooner depending on how he feels.

In general, fractured tibias take between three and six months to heal. Healing time can be expedited if the injury is rehabbed properly. It all depends on the severity of the fracture.

Jenkins is one of two wide receivers embedded in the Tigers’ 2018 recruiting class along with 4-star Berwick (La.) High School standout Kenan Jones. Wide receiver is a major position of need for LSU as it looks to pad its depth there for the newly installed offense.

The 3-star prospect was due for a big senior season. During the Jena High School jamboree last weekend, Jenkins saw action in the backfield and out wide.

Interesting spot for LSU and Bama as in-home visits with recruits begin this week.

Auburn will be "game week” mode. The other 4 SEC West teams (TAMU, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Miss State) may all be going through the week without a head coach.
