Cronin: Simmons saves signing day for Mississippi State

Less than 24 hours before national signing day, Mississippi State was shaping up for a disastrous stumble to the finish line. (http://www.clarionledger.com/story/sports/recruitingreport/2016/02/03/cronin-simmons-saves-signing-day-mississippi-state/79775816)

Quote
In back-to-back days, two of the state's top recruits opted to play college football outside of Mississippi. If losing four-star Germantown cornerback Nigel Knott to the Crimson Tide wasn't enough, Mississippi State suffered an even bigger gut punch when four-star West Point offensive tackle Scott Lashley slipped out of its backyard and into the grasp of Alabama, and South Carolina commit offensive guard Lloyd Cushenberry flipped to LSU, not MSU, on signing day.

As the national letters of intent filtered through on Wednesday, Mississippi State caught a glimmer of hope when four-star Starkville defensive tackle Kobe Jones decided to stay home and play for the Bulldogs. And in what seemed like an instant, the tone on Twitter among fans turned from calling for Dan Mullen and his staff to clear out of the Leo Seal Jr. Football Complex to that of praise for the Bulldogs' recruiting efforts in the eleventh hour.

Mississippi State found its way out of a deep hole by nabbing the state's top ranked player in five-star defensive end Jeffery Simmons. The Noxubee County product chose MSU over Ole Miss, Alabama and Tennessee and saved signing day for the Bulldogs.

For weeks it looked like Simmons would end up in Oxford...

State finished 2016 with the 31st-best class, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. It wasn't the best finish under Mullen (which happened last year when MSU finished 18th) or the worst (the Bulldogs had the 35th best classes in 2011 and 2014), but landing a five-star prospect, two four-star recruits in Jones and Greenwood defensive end Marquiss Spencer along with 15 three-star guys is a strong way to finish a rough stretch.

MSU is overjoyed right now and should celebrate its win with Simmons, but the 6-foot-4, 275-pounder isn't the answer for everything.

State entered the recruiting period in January in the race for six of Mississippi's uncommitted or wavering prospects (Simmons, Jones, Knott, Lashley, Raekwon Davis and A.J. Brown). Ole Miss ended up with five of Mississippi's top 10 players, Alabama with three and Mississippi State with two. With as much emphasis as Mississippi State puts on recruiting it's home state, not being able to seal the deal in its backyard with Lashley and Brown is alarming, but Mullen says he won't be haunted by those he missed.

"I guess in the end, you’re going to win some and you’re going to lose some," Mullen said. "The part to me that I look is most important is you get the guys that are right for you. The guys that fit your program and for us, that want to be developed, that want to be coached hard, want to be much better players when they leave than when they came."

Could things have gone better for Mississippi State? Sure, and going forward, the Bulldogs have to bring their recruiting strategy into discussion. Would it have been different had Tony Hughes, Manny Diaz and Deshea Townsend not left within the six weeks leading up to signing day? Most likely, but MSU could have avoided this last minute uncertainty by pushing for a commitment from Jones earlier and have him and another player serve as pillars to this class in order to help lock up other commits earlier than national signing day.

Recruiting battles will wear on until the very end some years, but having this many late in the game may also be the sign of a bigger problem...

Dan Mullen resurrects MSU's recruiting momentum ending a stretch where nothing went well.  http://on.thec-l.com/1X4oC75

Quote
At 11:37 a.m. the woman at the front desk screamed out “Wooooo!” The thick walls weren't enough to muffle the deeper roars from inside the coach’s office. Simmons, a five-star defensive end from Macon, chose Mississippi State.

“It was a lot of excitement,” coach Dan Mullen said. “Like I said, he was a guy that we had up at No. 1 for us all along.”

Mullen sprayed silly string in the air. His staff clapped in celebration. His wife, Megan, wiped tears from her eyes. Mullen eventually embraced David Turner, who took over the lead recruiting role on Simmons once Tony Hughes went to Jackson State.

Emotion got the best of the defensive line coach as tears formed in his eyes, too.

The celebration encompassed more than Simmons’ addition. It let out an exhale after Mississippi State lost three assistant coaches, three targets to Alabama and the top player in Starkville to Ole Miss since the beginning of the new year.

“It’s tough to compete with everybody,” Mullen said. “You’re talking about the best conference in all of college football. You’ve got some great teams, some great programs.”

MSU's System: Transforming 3-star talent to @NFL players (@HailStateFB) via @MikeBBonner http://on.thec-l.com/1T12hI8

Quote
STARKVILLE — A pattern formed within Mississippi State’s Twitter timeline during national signing day on Wednesday.

Within the updates of new signees appeared retweets from NFL players. Each congratulated the members of the class and relived their highlights from their time in Starkville.

Most also shared a similar signing day experience. They were overlooked.

“OK y’all worried about recruiting and stars remember Me (Darius) Slay and Dak (Prescott) were 2 and 3 stars,” former MSU corner and Tampa Bay Buccaneer Johnthan Banks tweeted.

Dan Mullen and his staff entered signing day with a class of 16 prospects. Fifteen were three-star players. The additions of five-star talent Jeffery Simmons and four-star defensive tackle Kobe Jones stole the headlines from an otherwise mediocre class, according to recruiting web sites.

In eight years at Mississippi State, Mullen has never won signing day. He’s never reeled in a class ranked better than eighth in the SEC. He’s broken into the top 20 nationally once, which was last year coming off MSU's most successful season in 70 years.

This year’s class ranked 31st in the country and fifth among Mullen’s recruiting classes at MSU, according to 247Sports.

“We’re all kind of battling for those same kids,” Mullen said. “I guess in the end, you’re going to win some and you’re going to lose some.”

Recapping Mississippi State's national signing day http://es.pn/23XvfwJ

Quote
Biggest need heading into signing day: There’s no sugar-coating it: Mississippi State’s offensive line was terrible last season. Their linemen couldn’t generate any semblance of a running game and they let Dak Prescott get sacked more than any quarterback in the conference. It’s really a wonder the Bulldogs won nine games. But that kind of success isn’t going to happen again next season without serious improvement in the trenches, especially considering the fact that there will be a new starter at quarterback. With left tackle Rufus Warren and left guard Justin Malone also gone, coach Dan Mullen and his staff were in need of some capable replacements.

How it was addressed: Maybe former No. 1 junior college offensive tackle Martinas Rankin will develop into the difference-maker everyone anticipated he’d become last season. Maybe a few other talented underclassmen already in the program will blossom as well. Because by the looks of the 2016 class, Mullen didn’t land any ready-made impact guys on the O-line...

The 2017 Walnut wide receiver verbally committed Monday to MSU.

“By me going there, I feel like I was next in line,” Hunt said. “I was raised as a Mississippi State fan and it’s been that ever since.”

Hunt, who is listed at 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds, is a consensus three-star prospect. The 247Sports Composite ranks Hunt as the No. 21 player of his class in Mississippi.

Hunt attended MSU’s spring practice Thursday and informed MSU coach Dan Mullen of his decision Monday. He became the Bulldogs’ sixth verbal commitment for the 2017 class.

Hunts holds an offer from South Alabama and has interest from Ole Miss and Memphis.

Dan Mullen is waiting on the police reports and more than the video before making a decision on Jeffery Simmons http://on.thec-l.com/1MCm6Ec

Quote
STARKVILLE — Dan Mullen broke his silence Wednesday regarding the incident that led to the arrest of Mississippi State signee Jeffery Simmons. Mullen told ESPN he is awaiting police reports and more information than the video, which shows the five-star defensive lineman striking a woman on the ground, before making a decision regarding Simmons' future with the program.

"To me, like any situation you get into, you evaluate all the details and research every aspect of it," Mullen told ESPN. "I want to see some of the police reports. There's so much more I want to evaluate with the situation before I make a decision about what's best for our program. The five seconds of video, I don't think there's anything appropriate in it. That's what everyone is looking at right now and I don't think Jeffery would say there's anything appropriate in that five seconds of video. I don't think I'd say there's anything appropriate in that five seconds of video you see. But looking at the bigger picture is where we're spending our time."

A video surfaced last week showing Simmons hitting a woman on the ground. The incident took place last Thursday. The former Dandy Dozen selection apologized for the incident on Facebook. Macon Police charged Simmons with simple assault and disturbing the peace on Monday.

Both charges are misdemeanors. Four others, a man and three women, were also charged in the incident.

Things are tense at Mississippi State following the news that five-star defensive end signee Jeffery Simmons will only be suspended one game.

Video surfaced of him striking a woman on the ground several times in April, and Mississippi State announced the suspension last week at the SEC meeting in Destin, Fla.

Simmons will be suspended for the Bulldogs’ opening game against South Alabama on Sept. 3, and the school has been under a good bit of scrutiny for the decision. But will it have an affect on the recruiting trail?

Not for three-star Penn State commit D.J. Brown.

The Creekside High School (Fairburn, Ga.) native wasn’t exactly on board with the handling of the situation, but said it wouldn’t impact his decision to attend the university.

However, he does believe Simmons deserved more than a one-game suspension.

“Domestic abuse isn’t something to play with,” Brown told SEC Country. “ I think he should have been suspended a little bit longer than just a game. If he learned his lesson then he learned his lesson.

“I would say [he should have been suspended] at least two games because hitting a women, that’s not cool right there. It’s different from not going to class. Hitting a women is something serious. You can go to jail for that.”

Of course those committed to glass houses...

The woman Simmons beat down was a person living in the same complex who reportedly was bullying his sister.  She was not his wife, girlfriend, family member or other that category that would qualify as "Domestic Abuse" which is being reported in the media.

This was ground and pound abuse of a member of the opposite sex.

FOIA: For Mississippi State, a handful of tweets resulted in secondary violations (http://www.clarionledger.com/story/sports/college/mississippi-state/2016/07/22/msu-self-reported-10-secondary-violations-ncaa/87434952)

[Showing him the "love"]
Less than a month after becoming a recruiting specialist at MSU, Patrick Austin committed a violation with a tweet.

On March 3, Austin replied to a prospective student athlete’s tweet. According to documents, Austin meant to send the athlete a direct message. Instead, his message went public, which is a violation.

[Strong countermeasures, lessons learned]
MSU reminded football coach Dan Mullen of his responsibilities to educate his staff on the use of social media. The SEC added to the penalty by preventing Austin from off-campus recruiting for a period of 30 days. It also prohibited the university from in-person or off-campus contact with the prospective student-athlete (PSA) for 90 days.

Bulldogs turned it into a big recruiting day as his team secured three commitments from the event, according to Will Sammon of The Clarion Ledger. Mississippi State picked up commitments from Florida offensive lineman Cordavien Suggs, junior college defensive lineman Deion Pope and, of course, junior college offensive lineman Tyre Phillips.

Pope is a four-star defensive line prospect rated the seventh best prospect in the country for the class of 2017 and the second best defensive tackle, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings. Pope attended Copiah-Lincoln Community College last season.

Landrews starred during his first season in community college, leading the team with eight pass breakups and two interceptions. In addition to Mississippi State, Landrews held offers from Arkansas, Middle Tennessee State and Southern Miss.

Kaleb Oliver, a three-star safety commit for MSU out of Tennessee, re-opened his recruitment — he did not decommit, but will now entertain interest from other schools — and 2018 defensive tackle Emmit Gooden out of Independence Community College in Kansas decommitted. Gooden cited the changes at defensive coordinator over the last few years as a reason why, but did add that MSU remains a top school for him.

Oliver was recruited by Grantham while the latter was at Louisville.

Linebacker will be the key spot to watch for MSU in the remaining weeks before Feb. 1 because that is the position group that is most impacted by the defensive coordinator swap; Grantham, like Sirmon did, is expected to coach linebackers.

Starkville four-star 2017 linebacker Willie Gay remains as the Bulldogs’ top priority. Gay received visits from Michigan and MSU on Thursday and said Friday that he stills expects to take an official visit to MSU this weekend.

Gay met Grantham on Thursday and said the in-home visit went well. From the Bulldogs’ perspective, it is critical that he takes an official visit, sources said.

He is expected to take an official visit to LSU later this month, and the Tigers, Ole Miss and Michigan are still contenders along with MSU. Gay has repeatedly said it is likely that he will not announce a decision until signing day.

Mohamed Sanogo is another linebacker target to watch for MSU — and Ole Miss, for that matter. Sanogo is a high-end three-star prospect out of Texas who recently decommitted from Houston. He is visiting MSU this weekend where he expects to talk to Grantham for the first time. Ole Miss visited him Thursday and he said it went well

State did not land any commitments this past weekend.

A major defensive commit met his new position coach and progress was made, sources said, with a premiere in-state target.

Grantham is a savage.

Well, at least that's how linebacker Tyler Dunning out of St. Thomas Aquinas in Florida views MSU's new defensive coordinator, and to be clear, yes, that is a compliment.

MSU’s highest rated high school defensive commit's first meeting with Grantham went well. Dunning likes Grantham’s background as a developer with a track record for successful defenses.

“I love his mindset,” Dunning said. “The defense is going to be lit.”

Dunning, who is 6-foot and 230 pounds, committed to MSU in the spring and has a shot to play early on. With Grantham coming in, it remains to be seen what exactly MSU’s defense will look like, but Dunning’s versatility should allow him opportunities at a couple of spots in what is expected to be a 3-4 with multiple fronts.

Talk around MSU about its chances of landing Morton four-star wide receiver and Dandy Dozen D.D. Bowie went from “No, this likely won’t happen,” to “Hey, it looks like there is a shot,” to “This is a high possibility”...

MSU hosted a pair of offensive linemen targets in Josh Cooper out of Haughton (La.) and Jordan Rhodes from Creekside in Georgia.

After landing New Hope lineman Taekion Reed and Tennessee punter Tucker Day last weekend, and then seeing Callaway defensive end and Dandy Dozen [sic] flip to Louisville later in the week, there were [sic] additions or subtractions this past weekend for MSU... [and you want to be our new beat writer.]

Only MSU commit who has not taken an official to Starkville this month is Montravious Richardson.

State entered this year’s recruiting cycle in position to secure commitments from the top in-state talent and take advantage of rival Ole Miss receiving its amended Notice of Allegations in February after the NCAA investigation.

On Monday night, the Bulldogs took a significant first step...

Tupelo three-star linebacker Jett Johnson, the top-ranked player at his position in Mississippi, announced his verbal commitment to Mississippi State over Ole Miss, among others.

The news is a big deal for Mississippi State for two reasons: 1.) Johnson is one of the best players in Mississippi and 2.) His commitment sets a significant tone for the Bulldogs’ ability to secure in-state recruiting wins over the Rebels, considering his ties to both schools.

West Point athlete Marcus Murphy separated himself as one of 2018's best by dominating in all areas of the game.

Murphy put up numbers rushing, receiving and passing for the the Green Wave. During his junior season, he finished with nearly 2,000 total yards: 1,756 rushing, 97 passing, 137 receiving and 27 total touchdowns. In his sophomore campaign he had 2,426 total yards: 1,615 rushing, 770 passing, 41 receiving and 18 touchdowns.

In the last two years, he's proven his ability to control the game offensively and clearly show why he is a member of the 2017 Dandy Dozen. He is the fifth player from the West Point program to be named to the Dandy Dozen...

Murphy, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound athlete, is currently ranked as a three-star prospect and the No. 6 overall player in [the state of] Mississippi's 2018 class.

Sources close to the program envision Murphy fitting best at safety.

Mississippi State's newest commit has some versatility. on where he will play at next level and where he fits (https://twitter.com/WillSammon/status/898217019669184513)

State has valued versatility and the ability to play on either side of the ball in its 2018 class lately with West Point’s Marcus Murphy and Pearl’s Johnquarise Patterson being two in-state examples.

Three-star athlete Nathaniel Watson out of Maplesville, Alabama, announced his verbal commitment to Mississippi State after being a top target for the Bulldogs throughout the summer.

Watson is expected to play wide receiver at the next level, but he can also play safety and linebacker. He will be given an opportunity to compete early as a wide receiver at MSU, sources close to the program said.

Mississippi's no. 1 prospect in the 2019 class, Louisville's Charles Moore, is pledged to be a Bulldog

The 6-foot-4, 240-pound defensive end gave his verbal commitment to Mississippi State Saturday afternoon, tweeting "I'm apart of the family..."

Moore suffered an ACL tear during Louisville's jamboree game against Starkville August 12. His initial reaction to the news he'd be out his junior season was worry — worry that this would have huge implications on his recruitment.

It didn't. What happened was a showing of "loyalty" on Mississippi State's part, as Moore put it.

"A lot of schools kind of fell back," Moore said. "They were the first and only school that reached out to my coaches and let my coaches know that I still had my offer, I still had a place to go and it was still home for me."

It was that loyalty that convinced Moore that State was where he belonged.

He already has big plans for the program, starting with recruiting the rest of Mississippi's 2019 stars to join him in Starkville.

James Williams, the No. 1 defensive end in the state and the No. 2 overall player, is a Mississippi State Bulldog.

"The fact that I know I can come in right away and play was a factor in my decision," Williams said. "I also feel at home in Starkville."

Williams said he wanted to take his time with the recruiting process, but he knew Tuesday morning it was the right time to make it official and commit to Mississippi State. He called Dan Mullen and let him know he'd make his announcement following Callaway's practice.

Williams is the eighth Dandy Dozen player to commit to Mississippi State this year and the 25th overall commitment for Mullen's 2018 class that is ranked 17th overall and sixth in the SEC. Mississippi State now holds commitments from six of the top seven recruits this year. Those close to the Mississippi State program feel this will have significant effects on in-state recruiting moving forward.
