Rutgers today, is positioned to be as good as any football team in America.  We are three deep at most positions, have upperclassmen occupying most of the two deep, and have a plethora of players who might be good enough to play in the NFL.  Going into this season, I have Rutgers ranked #4 in the country:

1. LSU
2. USC
3. Alabama
4. Rutgers
5. Michigan

The level of depth and Talent at Rutgers should provide us with a competitive advantage against most college football teams.  Let me tell you about our personnel.

Success at Rutgers begins on the defensive side of the ball, where we finished #14 LY in Total Defense.  Its led by 6-1 220 lb #20 WLB Khasseem Greene, who is fast and  possesses tremendous instincts, which allows him to be exceptionally productive.  Not only is he a tackling machine, he can also cover well, which is a valuable asset especially because we play a number of spread teams.  Khasseem should be one of the best linebackers in America, and is a candidate for the Bronco Nagurski trophy.  Khaseem is joined by fellow linebackers MLB Steve Beauharnais (6-2, 235 lb) and Jamal Merril (6-4 220 lbs) who are solid

i  think our lb depth chart will go something like this:

WLB-  Greene, Snyder (6-3 225 lbs), Joseph (6-2, 220 lbs)
MLB - Beaurnahais, Lambert (6-2, 230 lbs), Joseph (6-2, 220 lbs)
SLB - Merrill (6-4 220 lbs), Gause (6-1, 220 lbs), Whitaker (6-2 210)

The linebackers are complemented by what should be one of the best secondaries in America.  Logan Ryan is a Darrelle Revis like outstanding corner, who plays with advanced technique and led the team with 14 pass breakups.  Brandon Jones is the other corner who proved to be solid.  Duron Harmon is an Ed Reed like Free Safety who notched 5 interceptions last year and strong safety Lorenzo Waters is the sole newbie of the group, though he is a junior.  The depth chart should look something like this:

CB-Ryan (Sr. 6-0, 190), Cooper (Sr. 6-2, 185), Glashen (So. 5-10, 180)
CB-Jones (Sr. 6-1, 186), Robinson (Sr. 5-10, 185), Johnson (So. 6-2, 186)

FS - Duron Harmon (Sr. 6-1 200), Rashad Knight (So. 5-11 195), JT Tartacoff (5-11, 190)

SS - Lorenzo Waters (So. 6-0 190), Wayne Warren (Sr. 6-1, 205), Johnathan Aiken (So. 5-11 186)

The defensive line is probably the most improved area in terms of talent and depth when compared with last year.  5th Year Senior DT Scott Vallone (6-3 275) is a disruptive force when healthy and seems poised for a big year.  He is complemented by  fellow senior NT Isaac Holmes (6-3 272), who will be starting consistently for the first time.  Veteran Michael Larrow (6-4 265)  will be one of the ends and Ka'lial Glaud (6-2 240) will be the other.  Augmenting depth will be one of the best freshman in the country, Darius Hamilton.  He is the son of former NY Giants linemen Keith Hamilton, and helped lead his high school, Don Bosco of Ramsey NJ, to be ranked #1 in the country.  The DLine depth chart should go something like this:

DE: Michael Larrow (Sr 6-4 270), Marcus Thompson (Jr 6-2, 260), Darius Hamilton (6-4, 250)
DT: Scott Vallone (Sr 6-3 270), Kenneth Kirksey (So 6-1, 280), Jamil Merrill (6-4, 260)
NT: Isaac Holmes (Sr. 6-3 275), Al Page (RFr 6-2 280), Marquise Wright (RFr 6-3 295)
DE: Ka'lial Glaud (Sr. 6-2 250), Marvin Booker (6-2 250), Max Issaka (RFr 6-3 255)

The Rutgers offense is poised to break out in 2012, after suffering through a rather pedestrian 2011. RT RJ Dill (SR. 6-7 315) should be an All Conference Candidate and should be playing Sundays next Fall.  RG Taj Alexander (SR. 6-4 290) has been waiting for this opportunity for two years and seems poised to shine.  Center Betim Bujari (So. 6-4 295) has the technique, mean streak, and smarts, to be among the nations best.  He moves over from guard, and is the primary reason why i think our rushing attack will be much improved from last year, where it was anemic most games.  Left Guard Antwan Lowery had offers from whos who in college football when he was a high school senior.  Though plagued by inconsistency his previous years which caused him to lose his starting job last year, he seems finally ready to make an impact as he looks and plays more confidently.  If he can put it all together, there's no reason why he won't be playing Sundays.  Left Tackle Kaleb Johnson (So. 6-4, 298) is strong, yet nimble, which is why many feel he has an NFL future.

LT- Kaleb Johnson (So. 6-4, 298), Andre Civil (Jr. 6-3, 278), Keith Lumpkin (rFr 6-8, 292)
LG- Antwan Lowery (Sr. 6-4, 301), David Osei (Jr, 6-4, 290), JJ Denman (Fr 6-7 305)
C - Betim Bujari (So 6-4, 290), Dallas Hendrickson (Sr, 6-2 295), David Osei (Jr, 6-4, 290)
RG - Taj Alexander (So 6-4, 290), Matt McBride (Jr 6-6, 290), Devon Watkis (Sr 6-7, 320)
RT - RJ Dill (SR. 6-7, 315), Devon Watkis (Sr 6-7, 320), Jorge Vicioso (6-6 296)

The much improved offensive line, should pave the way for a much improved rushing attack.  Jawan Jamison is the leading returning rusher, and his running style reminds some of Ray Rice.  Savon Huggins was one of the most heralded backs recruited last year, but suffered through injuries last year and was hurt by the less than stellar run blocking.  Both appear poised to excel and have the potential of rushing for a 1,000 yards.  They are complemented by a tough nosed pair of fullbacks in Michael Burton and Paul Caneveri.  Burton is an exceptional blocker, who is also a receiving threat out of the backfield.

RB - Juwaan Jamison (5-8, 200), Savon Huggins (6-0, 200)
FB - Michael Burton (6-0, 230), Sam Bergen (6-0, 235), Paul Caneveri (5-11, 220)

The tight ends are headlined by DC Jefferson (Sr. 6-6 270 lbs), who blocks like a left tackle and runs like a wide receiver.  We expect him to be playing Sundays next fall, provided he can be more consistent catching the ball, which is one area he needs to improve.  His blocking has come a long way, from when he was a freshman, and thats now an area where he excels.  The other te's are somewhat unknown, as they've been overshadowed by DC.

TE - DC Jefferson (Sr, 6-6, 270), Malcolm Bush (Sr. 6-4, 245)
TE -  Paul Carrezola (Jr 6-3, 240), Tyler Kroft (So, 6-6, 220)

The wide receiving corp could be the best in America.  Its headlined by 6-6 230 lb monster Brandon Coleman, who spent his previous years in the shadows as our offense was dominated by Mohamed Sanu, who has been subsequently drafted by the Bengals.   I don't think there is a  corner in America who can effectively cover Coleman, because he is fast, huge, physical and has decent hands. With a huge season, he could opt for the draft next april, even with an additional year of eligibility remaining. He is complemented by 6-4 235 lb WR Mark Harrison, who also is tough to cover because of his size, but needs to be more consistent.  Quron Pratt, Timothy Wright, Myles Shuler, and Jeremy Deering are exceptional talents who are all capable of putting up huge receiving numbers in a hurry.  Thats why Rutgers might have the deepest wr corp in America.

The quarterbacks are a spunky bunch, and were good enough to get us 9 wins last year.  Chas Dodd has the most experience, which might give him the edge for the starters role.  He had a 56.7% completion percentage and threw for over 1,500 yards last year.  Gary Nova has a better arm, but can be erratic at times, losing fumbles and throwing interceptions.  With better protection, they should be able to improve upon last years numbers.

When I look at our roster, I feel GREAT regarding our prospects against other teams.  We should be able to run the ball, stop the run, and rush the passer.  The sole unknown in my mind, is whether our passers will be able to deliver the ball accurately and consistently to our play making, game breaking wide receivers.  That is the only position where a team like Arkansas has a competitive advantage.  At every other position, we are either similar or superior.

Can't wait for the games to begin!

We'll see how that works out for you.

I'll admit that I don't know much about Rutgers, but your 9-4 record last year was in the Big East and included zero wins over a Top 25 team. To say that this year you are going to finish 4th in the nation is a stretch of homerism that most Arkansas fans wouldn't make and we have a legit Top 10 team coming back.

ICEman

They seem to be a bit underweight across the defensive front in order to compete against the upper echelon teams of the SEC.

Not sure if serious...... Or just really bad troll.

Really though... Cool story bro. Are you in the SEC?

As we all know the game is won in the trenches. Rutgers 270lb DTs vs our Oline...I'll take that. The OP barely mentions Rutgers Oline so I'm guessing there isn't much to crow about.

Welcome to the board. A load of optimism, but I wouldnt dare put Rutgers that high.  Sanu dominated because he was that good. You lost two guards and a center on the offensive line, so good luck breaking that new line in against Arkansas. No clear cut man leading at QB and youre bringing a new head coach into a hostile environment. Defensively, you'll hang your hat, but Arkansas won't shy away.

Agreed. The guy was respectful and seems knowledgeable tho delusional.

Extremely small defensive line; we should have no problem establishing the run and force them into an 8 man front.

On offense, they have no QB and no standout at RB.

Barring we get no injuries in fall camp, I see no reason why we don't win by 3 TDs.

Even with a respectable defense, if you come into Fayetteville with no QB (SEC teams included), we're dropping the hammer on you.

Lake City Hog

Guys, cut him some slack, he is a FAN and he came in peace. I fully expect for us to win, but let's do it with a little class. I would just about bet that Bama fans talk about us much the same way.

Al, I for one appreciate your enthusiasm and enjoyed reading your synopsis of the Rutgers roster. Your WR's could be an issue for anyone, they are huge, and it sounds like a near SEC group of Linebackers.
Good Luck on your season, I hope that the Scarlet Knights win a lot and lose 1 for sure!

Well, maybe if you guys squeeze out a W, the ACC will consider letting you become a part of their esteemed conference.  I know you're all anxiously awaiting that letter.  Good luck against Temple.

I guess this just highlights that this will truly be a big game to them.

thanks for the info RA.

Wow you don't have a D-lineman over 300 lbs.

Davis, Johnson, Wingo, and Walker are going to rape your defense!

3-1 odds K. Small puts a D-lineman on his arse at some point.

Hans Gruber

We'll have to give our team the underdog pep talk, now.  Not sure what we're going to do having just played Alabama.

sickboy

Rutgers is a fine team. Some really good players.

Still, there's absolutely no way that Rutgers comes to Fayetteville and beats the Hogs. Zero. Maybe another year, but not this year. The Hogs are too good.

I think the Rutgers games is going to be tougher than expected because we play Alabama the week before. . . . it's going to be real diffiuclt for our players to bring their A game after leaving everything on the field against the Tide.

And Rutgers will be pumped up to play this one. . .

Wow! I am shocked! You beat the almighty Navy by 1 point! :puke: :puke:
How the hell did we wind up like this? Why weren't we able to see the signs that we missed? And try to turn the tables. Nothing is wrong, just as long as you know that someday I will. Some day, Some how. Gonna make it alright but not right now. I know you're wondering when.

Hog Fan...DOH!

I expect Arkansas to grind Rutgers away.  Too much size and depth up front.  The DL/OL is not comparable.  I see this game being very similar to the K-State game- except our offense won't be rusty.

He comes to a rival teams' board, posts more dribble than Robert Shields and leads off that his team is #4 in the nation?  Yeah we should totally give him a pass.  I think we kindly owe him a reality check.

He didn't say a negative word about Arkansas -- he's just a huge homer. Who cares? Nice to see some Rutgers fans if you ask me. He gave us some interesting insight into their team too.

I don't know why some of you are so dismissive. It took a 99 yard fumble return for us to beat VANDY last year.

BrokenArrowHogs

The Rutgers game will be interesting just for the curiosity factor, but I don't think they are a real threat to beat AR.  They have not beaten any teams on or near AR's level recently and the Big East was very weak outside of WV.

Tulsa presents more of a threat than Rutgers in my opinion.  Conf USA or not, they went to South Bend and beat an average (although more talented than Tulsa) team in their storied stadium.  I give Tulsa more respect competition wise that Rutgers.

Glad they have such fired up and dedicated fans, though.  Good for them.

I agree with you, and a missed FG.  AR has won some games the past two years that hinged on lucky breaks (Vandy last year), or complete collapses by the other squad (ala, A&M last year).  The wins stand in the books, but its not as though our team has been overpowering week in and out in the conference, particularly on the road.  I'm proud of the team's success, but I think we also need to stay objective about how razor thin the margin for success has been the past 2 years.

So, Rutgers is a top 5 school and the only position that Arkansas has an advantage at is QB? Right. Arkansas by 20.
